Gospel? Thats hardly worthy of the KBOX Glory that was teased earlier this year.
I really hope thats NOT the new format.
A rousing Amen Brother!!! ;D
I've got nothing against Religious Broadcasters per say but they seem to be well represented on AM/FM and TV here in DFW. These days it seems the real estate investment/owner types are convinced the only way to make money with an AM facility is:
A) Renting out broadcast time to brokered shows (the equivalent of radio slum lords)
B) Yet another Religious/Gospel station
C) Fifth or Six tiered low budget/barter Conservative Rant Fests Talk Shows
D) Whatever they can get from Dial Global/ARN or other free/barter programming
Yet when you listen around the DFW AM dial, you will hear some examples of
Quality niche music programming and as you listen to the spot breaks, appear to indicate these stations are generating local revenue. Stations with music programming as diverse as KGVL, KGAF, KPYK, KCLE, and KBEC. Note in general you will find these stations are usually
locally owned and operated.
Now granted, more than likely the morning show talent is not knocking down a six figure salary, and the rest of the staff are not driving S class Mercedes to the country club. Yet when you listen to these niche format broadcasters they sound like they are having FUN serving the LOCAL market, while generating enough revenue to support station operations and enough to pay staff members a nice middle class income.
Nobody is going to get rich per say and it does require staff members to wear a multitude of hats to get the job done. But from listening to the "attitude" of the talents on the various stations the results appear to be rewarding. I always hear a smile on these stations.
Even now I still see niche music format holes that AM stations can fill here in DFW and IF the station is ran frugally the owner and the staff can make decent money, enjoy their work, serve their local market, and provide a quality product they can be proud of.
Listening to KGVL and KGAF as examples, it's hard to agree with those who say music won't work on AM. The
local advertisers loading up the stop-sets of these stations seem to indicate
you can make money on AM simply by doing local/live programming that super serves the listener and the local market.
In the case of 1480, I was hoping for something a little more creative rather than the usual fall-back programming I showed in the list...
