KNIT 1480 update

I've been around long enough to remember listening to 'Wonderful KBOX in Dallas'

Now, in April 2012, there's a big void with all the programming removed from 570 and 820 by Cumulus, including Coast-To-Coast. Is there an opportunity here?

Could be, but from what I've heard about 1190 here, it sounds like they'll be the place where that programming will be moving to.

BTW the KBXD listing is now back on Radio-Info. http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?sr=Y&s=C&call=KBXD&x=0&y=0

I still have a couple of the "I Listen To Wonderful KBOX 1480 in Dallas " pencils! Grew up in the '50s-'60s about 6 blocks away from 9900 McCree Rd.

It's been a couple months since the last update. Any word on 1480's transmitter upgrades or any test broadcasting?

Yes, things are going on, just not all that visible. The transmitter building is being expanded to accommodate the new transmitter and phasor, and a new tower will be going up shortly. It has finally dried out enough for equipment to move about the site without getting stuck, so outside work is starting. Another copper thief hit the place, and broke into the Mobile Mini office which is next to the transmitter building. The little druggie opened up the air conditioning unit and crawled in through the return air vent. That was welded shut and a steel cage welded over it, but he came back with a Sawzall and cut right through it and went in again. They stole 10 reels of Copperweld copper plated steel wire, thinking it was copper, but couldn't get a 400' roll of copper strap through the vent. However one of them did leave a nice set of prints on the shiny new copper, and he was in jail in a couple days. The last guy got one year, hopefully this one will get at least that. So that is two captured from this site, maybe the word will get out that this place is unlucky for thieves.

As to the night signal, that is being looked into also. We'll see what improvements can be made. The station was on the air for a day at low power, and the STA was renewed for another 6 months. We hope to be testing by July, but that could move either way depending on circumstances. We aren't going to rush through this, it will be done right, and yes the KBXD callsign will be K-Box on the air. That's all for now, will be back in a few weeks with another update.

Can you tell us what your format will be? Will you be hiring any djs soon?

Looking forward to the return of the legendary "K-BOX 1480" , any updates on its progress ?

This is very interesting news to those of us that spent many happy years at 9900 McCree Road. Many of the old 1480 air staff are still in the area: Allan Peck, Bobby Dark, Kenny Loomis, Tom Allen, Dave O'Brian, Jay Ward, Peggy Sears, Doug Helton, Gail Lightfoot and, I'm sure, others that I have overlooked. I was there from 1968 to 1986 with both KBOX amd KMEZ.

Heard 1480 testing their transmitters over the past few days. Think they will be coming back on as a gospel station at 50,000 watts. I understand they will have ministry problems along with Southern Gospel music. Very similar to what KKGM did before they went to all talk radio. Probably will be carrying the Solid Gospel Network with no local live dj's. Last I heard they plan to be up and broadcasting by this Saturday.

Gospel? Thats hardly worthy of the KBOX Glory that was teased earlier this year.
I really hope thats NOT the new format.

A rousing Amen Brother!!! ;D

I've got nothing against Religious Broadcasters per say but they seem to be well represented on AM/FM and TV here in DFW. These days it seems the real estate investment/owner types are convinced the only way to make money with an AM facility is:

A) Renting out broadcast time to brokered shows (the equivalent of radio slum lords)
B) Yet another Religious/Gospel station
C) Fifth or Six tiered low budget/barter Conservative Rant Fests Talk Shows
D) Whatever they can get from Dial Global/ARN or other free/barter programming

Yet when you listen around the DFW AM dial, you will hear some examples of Quality niche music programming and as you listen to the spot breaks, appear to indicate these stations are generating local revenue. Stations with music programming as diverse as KGVL, KGAF, KPYK, KCLE, and KBEC. Note in general you will find these stations are usually locally owned and operated.

Now granted, more than likely the morning show talent is not knocking down a six figure salary, and the rest of the staff are not driving S class Mercedes to the country club. Yet when you listen to these niche format broadcasters they sound like they are having FUN serving the LOCAL market, while generating enough revenue to support station operations and enough to pay staff members a nice middle class income.

Nobody is going to get rich per say and it does require staff members to wear a multitude of hats to get the job done. But from listening to the "attitude" of the talents on the various stations the results appear to be rewarding. I always hear a smile on these stations.

Even now I still see niche music format holes that AM stations can fill here in DFW and IF the station is ran frugally the owner and the staff can make decent money, enjoy their work, serve their local market, and provide a quality product they can be proud of.

Listening to KGVL and KGAF as examples, it's hard to agree with those who say music won't work on AM. The local advertisers loading up the stop-sets of these stations seem to indicate you can make money on AM simply by doing local/live programming that super serves the listener and the local market.

In the case of 1480, I was hoping for something a little more creative rather than the usual fall-back programming I showed in the list...

Sorry to hear that it won't be either rock & roll oldies or classic country. Either of those would harken back to that legendary station's past and to me be worthy of being called "KBOX."

Channel 8 is also the first thing I thought of when I saw "The Spirit of Texas." Belo may have something to say about anyone else using it.

Just another audio billboard. Sorry to hear it wont be Oldies or Classic Country. As for "Gospel" will it be Black Gospel or Southern Gospel?

BTW Has 1480 began transmitter tests yet?

If its not to signally challenged, it could give Heaven 97/KGGR duo a run for its money. I think they need some competition.

KXBD could give KGGR some competition if they out-program them and if they can improve that 1900 watt night pattern.

But from what I've experienced from brokered programming it's always done on the cheap with little money for live local DJ's, market research and promotion. Plug-N-Play programming wont compete.

They will be known as KBXD 1480 The Spirit of Texas.
Wait a minute, isn't "The Spirit of Texas" the same slogan used for WFAA-TV?

Yes, and WFAA will protect it's intellectual property.

That slogan "The Spirit of Texas" will last the amount of time it takes the cease and desist order to reach the Fax machine or the courier to arrive at the 1480 studio.

Next...

The KBOX heyday was half a century ago, thus irrelevant to virtually all of today's listening audience. Anyone who remembers that time is long gone from any saleable demographics.

Does anyone know where 1480s office and (hopefully) studio (or computer) is located? I doubt it would be at the transmitter site in the Rylie area.
