KOKE?

It was off for a little while this afternoon, and now it's Spanish :-[

This is from a news release from around three weeks ago:

Border Media Partners has agreed to sell three AM outlets in Austin, TX, to Jose J. Garcia for $5.5 million. Included in the deal are Spanish Religious KELG-AM (1440), News/Talk KOKE-AM (1600) and Oldies KTXZ-AM (1560). BMP will continue to own KFON-AM, KHHL-FM, KKLB-FM, KTTX-FM and KXBT-FM in Austin.

Garcia already owns several other Spanish-language radio stations in Austin.

i wonder who's gonna pickup air-america, now that koke-am is now back to spanish.
I doupt any one, I dont think air america radio is doing very well all together.

I KNEW this was going to happen the moment the sale was announced. Let's face it....AA was never a player in Austin. Talk radio has been taken over by the right and it's going to take some time before the left or middle can get a word in edgewise. AA is trying, yes, but even in Austin the fact that the signal was so poor contributed to the poor ratings. Had KOKE been doing a 3 or so, you can bet it would never have been sold.

Being out of the listening area, I can't tell you what KOKE is doing. However, I can tell you that Garcia will have the rights to the "Club," "Planeta," "Radio Caliente," and "Puro Norteno" names. That's clearly spelled out in the LMA. So, I would think there are probably more changes afoot.

Interesting. "Club" was the original name he used for KKLB 92.5 prior to selling the station to BMP. The format he used then for "Club" KKLB 92.5 was Tejano. I haven't read anywhere about him re-purchasing KKLB from BMP just the aforementioned frecuencies. Maybe i missed something, is KKLB part of his recent purchase from BMP. If so, are these the last days for Digital (KKLB 92.5) in Austin?

Currently, KTXZ 1560 [Planeta] is now "rock en español," 1440 am [Radio Caliente] is now regional mexican, 1490 is now norteño (regional mexican)[Puro Norteño].

KKLB is no longer in Austin. The calls are parked on a CP in Madisonville owned by Katherine Pyeatt. Garcia is getting KELG 1440, KTXZ 1560, and KOKE 1600. It looks like he may bring back some of his old formats, though. For example, I could see him doing the "Club" tejano format on an AM if he hasn't already brought it back.

Currently, KTXZ 1560 [Planeta] is now "rock en español," 1440 am [Radio Caliente] is now regional mexican, 1490 is now norteño (regional mexican)[Puro Norteño].

KFON 1490 is actually just "Norteno 1490," which is a corporate BMP format modeled after KSAH 720 "Norteno 720" in San Antonio. They're also airing "Norteno 1490" in Laredo. KTXZ 1560 was running "Viejitas Favoritas" as "La Lupe" while KELG 1440 was running Spanish religion and news as "La Luz" under BMP. Have 1440 and 1560 also changed since Garcia took over?

You're right. It just struck me as interesting that he has the rights to 4 brand names when he's only got 3 frecuencies. Actually, it isn't all that unusual when you think about it.

KTXZ (formerly "La Lupe" ) has changed to "Planeta". The format is "rock en español." KELG (formerly "La Luz") is now "Radio Caliente." So, yes both 1440 & 1560 have changed since Garcia took over.

Sorry. Actually, KELG (formerly "La Luz") is now broadcasting as "Radio Vida." Same programming.

Thanks for the update! So, it looks like Garcia has ditched the viejitas format of 1560 and brought back "La Planeta." That may be the only rock en espanol station in the contental US. If it's not, you can probably count the other stations doing that format on one hand! Are you able to get KOKE 1600? If you can, what's the new format called? I'm guessing Garcia probably brought back another one of his old formats.

By the way, if you want some Austin radio nostalgia, the old pages for KKLB 92.5, KELG 1440, KFON 1490 and KTXZ 1560 are still up. Of course, they weren't much when the stations existed, but they're still there.

KOKE 1600 is "Puro Norteño." I listened to quite a bit of it at 2pm & didn't recognize any of the artists until Los Tigrillos. Garcia was at one time Austin's go-to-spanish-language operator until Amigo and eventually Univision whacked him. I understand why BMP didn't want Garcia to set market ad rates, but I still think they overpaid for his stations. Garcia came out the winner in the deal, but now with his recent re-purchase i'm not so sure.

You're right KTXZ may be the only continental U.S. rock en español station. I'll double check. He should have stuck with the spanish-language Adult Hits format on KTXZ. I can't see the current format making a profit. Today I heard Manu Chao, Juanes, Los Abandoned, Aventura, Daddy Yankee, Cafe Tacuba, Avril Lavigne, Justin Timberlake, Resorte, Allison etc.

Re: KOKE?for sale

Garcias is in the middle of already selling one of the 3 stations he just bought from bmp for a bit over 2 million dolars!

You can count the rock en español formats in the entire world on the fingers of one hand, and the successful ones would leave 4 fingers left over... Outside of Argentina, there is no successful all rock en espanol station. Plenty of Latin American rockers play a little rock in Spanish, but none play all Spanish with success other than a single station in Argentina.

"Planeta" is masculine... although it ends in "a" it is like "problema"... el problema, el planeta, etc.

Yes, you are correct. Don't know how I did that! Must have gotten into a rush to get to work on time!

In response, to the threads I've been reading on here much can be said about the on goings of Hispanic radio broadcasting in Austin. The recent move on BMP radio's behalf was a much predicted one, when a company within a time span of two years transfers station formats consistantly, the on-air staff and upper management personnel has a high turn over rate and not too mention moving their jocks around every single time a book comes out. The letters were definitely in red spelling out FOR SALE SOON. As everyone in broadcasting knows, it's a numbers game and when numbers don't match up changes will take place especially when it's not your MONEY.
After monitoring the station changes this past week, it's quite sad Austin being one of the most liberal and democratic cities in you'd logically think that Air America would have worked in this city. It's quite unfortunate that after looking into the matter KOKE, had almost 0 infrastructure support within BMP, there was a lack of local programming integretated into it and was treated almost as a stepchild. To carry a signal and to be politically correct within the circles that Castro likes to surround himself with, obviously wasn't enough.
With regards to the format changes Garcia has recently made, KOKE is obviously targetting a more rural Mexican audience which makes up the largest demographic Hispanic population in Austin. In response to Gibby's comment, I'm assuming that's why your not familiar or knowledgable with the tunes your listening to. For those not familiar, Tigrillos is more part of the more mainstream Regional Mexican acts which are heard on La Ley and Que Buena, I guess Garcia found a nitch and that's what is being exploited.
It will be survival of the fetus within the next year within Hispanic broadcasters, interestingly enough Garcia doesn't owe anyone for his signals and likewise Univisions Network has more than the financial backing to support their stations.
With the new Latin Alternative Rock format on KTXZ and the dynamics of the cities music scene, who knows if the rumor of Digital moving to the AM dial will put them head to head or the jocks on the street like many others this past week at BMP. By the looks of it, I'm sure Garcia has had more than ample time to study the market and analyze his previous experiences, his next moves will be interesting to watch and listen to.

Garcia will be meeting this week with 3 potencial buyers for One of his 3 stations if you ask me He's asking for to much money 2 million dls for a half decent Austin(Mid Market Signal)...Im sure Garcia knows that he's doing but im guessing Planeta would atract more of a audience from el DF and im not sure What Austin break-up is.
