KQBU-FM changing call to KESS

So Estereo Latino returns to where it began in 1992, on 93.3. Heard a “Home of Norteño Hits” liner, so they are going after El Norte KQQK 107.9. Perhaps TU wants to help run MediaCo out of the market by damaging El Norte while SBS is shredding La Raza with La Ley.

Haven’t heard the 93.3 TOHID, did it change to KESS? Perhaps the change was granted just before the government shutdown, but not in time to show up in the FCC database.

At least we have the end of the farce of 93.3 drawing 0.1 if it showed up at all. Also puts an end to any chance of 97.5 going Regional Mexican.

But yes they could have just had La Que Buena KQBU and Estéreo Latino KLTN 93.3.
Which would have led to the loss of revenue...

While call letters do not matter for much nowadays, what they do matter is for the spreadsheets that national ad buyers buy stations off of. You change 102.9's calls and its national revenue gets cut.

On the RDS it shows KESS.

I think they just wanted a strategic flank to help KLTN in an overcrowded market. I'm not sure TU expects KESS to do much ratings wise. But if it can hurt KROI/KQQK and helps in sales, then it will be worth the effort.

Unfortunately, KESS and KLTN have a lot of overlap in their playlist, so while they may make some gains from KQQK, they may also end up taking away from KLTN. Although I've only listened very briefly, it does seem like KESS is playing more currents and Tejano than KQQK typically does.

I'm more interested in seeing if there are any adjustments to KOVE-FM's playlist and what effects KESS may have on it. The station focuses on soft , or "romantic", music of all genres, but there is enough regional mexican music on it to be considered "half" a regional mexican station IMO.

That leaves Houston with 5.5 fully licensed Regional Mexican stations, 2 regional mexican translators, and one Tejano station.

At some point someone has to throw in the towel and focus on something different.

Oh no!!! Whatever will I read to entertain myself now, if not 🐸's wild n' crazy KFNC speculations??

KESS...er KQBU-FM is, indeed, living at 107.1 Benbrook now. No changes to 107.9, which is my only source to hear "Latino Mix", but a new ID of KQBU-FM is included for 107.1.

I hear them mention Uforia app but I don’t see KESS on there’s neither on Iheart, yet the rest of the stations TU are there.

What, 🌹, you doubt my wild n’ crazy speculations?🔮🤔🤪🤣🤣

Note my first speculation of a flip of 93.3 was back on August 20 in post #460 of the Houston HD thread, not to mention spotting the call flip application on September 26.😝😉

Only said 97.5 would NOT go Regional Mexican. But there is a good possibility a flip to something else is in the works.🔨🔧🛠🪛🪚🧰🧐😬🤫

I wonder who, if anyone, will carry the Astros Spanish play by play next year?
What sort of arrangement did the Astros have with KQBU-FM? Did TU purchase the Spanish language broadcast rights, or was it a time purchase by the team which then kept all of most of the advertising revenue?

My only guess for a new home for the Astros in Spanish would be a return to KLAT. Supposedly the re-engineered 1010 night signal is almost ready to go, according to their latest STA extension filing. LMN doesn’t seem to have money to pay for the rights, so I would assume the time would be brokered to the team.

One station we can easily eliminate is KROI, as outside of the World Cup being aired on WPAT in New York, WLEY in Chicago and KRZZ in San Francisco at some point in the 2010s and WSKQ carrying the Titanes Del Caribe games that are played in NY, SBS doesn't typically air sports on their stations.

I don’t see any of the Spanish language music FM stations in Houston breaking their format and audience flow with daily baseball games.

it's just a rev share.

Someone will correct me if I'm off, but if memory serves correctly the 'stros signed with Univision to have the games broadcast in Spanish on 1010 KLAT. When Univision doubled down with TUDN on both AM and FM in Houston, the team began airing on both. Once Univision sold KLAT to LMN, the games came off of 1010 and remained solely on 93.3.

Now? Who knows where they'll go. Maybe they move to 104.9? Maybe one of the wild west translator operators try their hand at some play-by-play?
