I always loved the quote on Metal Church's first LP that was something to, 'It's too heavy for us' from an A & R rep from Atlantic Records.
It's too bad they don't test well: too raw. They were right at the top of the exploding metal scene in the 80s. A homegrown northwest elite metal band. Wild Dogs were similar in the Portland area.
Going mainstream got Metallica rich. Metal Church didn't chose that path, thus obscurity today.
On topic: KSGX is interesting. The brass at Clear Channel knows they won't ever be able to make a run on the full market FM's. Only having 2/3 of the market on it's best day, leaves KSGX limited choices to be profitable.
I'm surprised they abandoned the "Gen X" format. It appeared to be low overhead format similar to the Bob FM's of the world. Honestly, that's the only way I saw KSGX in the black. Automating the hell out of it.
That said, looking at Portland's Brew. Classic rock bringing its age demos down and targeting people my age instead of 50 year olds is smart - and it's time for it. There is so much classic rock now. Things aren't like they were early 90s, classic rock can now be defined very differently depending on the demographics you are working with. Portland's Brew though, seems pretty mainstream in comparison to the early playlist of KSGX.
KSGX's light smattering of heritage classic rock cuts with a heavier doses of more modern, is interesting. At first glance, it has elements of the old funky monkey in it. The old funky monkey listeners would give this a shot. Not too much classic rock to chase them off either. Accessible enough perhaps to build on the funky monkey's numbers.
I agree, this might get traction. Making the mix different and interesting might resonate.
Yes.com isn't the most accurate for playlists, so I type with a slight bit of caution. So far though, KSGX's new incarnation seems to be an experiment by the gang at Clear Channel. A beta test for a new format.
Nice to see KSGX at least having more use than an automated partial rim shot. Test mule is the label I see for this incarnation.

They're playing Metal Church? (Metal Church were a popular Seattle heavy metal band from the late '80s, best known for their 1988 collaboration with Sir Mix A Lot "Iron Man", which pioneered the rap/metal sound.)
That's DEEP even for your most eclectic, independently owned classic rocker out there. KZOK won't even touch them.
I'll have to listen.....This is interesting......
