KSUR (K surf) 1260

Yeah, a mistake converting that station to classical music. AM 1260 til 2020, was essentially the K-Earth 101 of decades past (pre 1991), meaning a nice and thorough selection of oldies and classic hits. And they were converting to more late 60's, 70's and a few 1980 tunes before that sudden change to classical. Oh well, nothing lasts forever, as they say. It was a great alternative while it lasted.
Also on 105.1 HD4 in Los Angeles

Someone explain to me how a 1260khz station from L.A. winds up 300 miles away in Monterey at 630khz with the same call letters, same format, same logos and on web still shows KKGO HD4

As for this…Saul bought 1240 in Monterey ten years ago and 630 eight years ago. He had owned three Monterey-Salinas-Santa Cruz FMs for several years prior. One of the FMs was Classical KMZT.

Saul ran his “Unforgettables” format on 1240 (then using the calls KNRY) on a separate server from the one that ran “Unforgettables” in L.A.

He sold the FMs, and while looking for buyers for the AMs, put K-Mozart on 630. At the same time, he flipped 1240 to the K-SURF format, essentially a simulcast of 1260 in Los Angeles, but with drop-in ID’s calling it “Monterey’s K-SURF 1240.”

Saul ended up donating the AMs to two different non-profits, but the group that was going to take 630 fell through. The station had been dark for more than a year. Saul, still the legal license holder, put 630 back on the air as K-SURF (running off the same server that feeds KKGO HD-4) and is hoping to find a new buyer or non-profit to donate the station to.

This happened after Saul changed 1260‘s calls to KMZT, so he applied to the FCC for KSUR, they were available and he had them assigned to 630 in Monterey.

Thank you michael Hagerty, for this very good lengthy explanation

It started off calling itself Oldies in 2017, then evolving into Superhits from 2018 until 2020, when the format moved online.
You can find them on the LAOldies.com. Take a Listen!

I take them when I go out and drive around, KRTH's presence is still felt by me.

That was back in the 60s...In the 50s and 60s KGIL 1260 was a major player, at least for listening in the ( then over 1 million pop.) San Fernando Valley. The station sounded and was every bit as major market as their direct competitor 710 KMPC. Interestingly, both stations xmitters were in the Valley, providing the strongest signals on any radio in this location. Although us teens were listening mostly to KRLA, KFWB, etc. Adults in the SFV seemed to be about evenly divided between KMPC and KGIL. A number major personalities had worked at both stations at one time or another.
KGIL's billboard and print advertising had slogans like "The Valley's Own !" One ad I remember seeing was even in German ! "Es gibt es nur eins ! (There is only one!)
