KTFM to Sports

I heard as part of the contract with the Cowboys, their games had to be on a groups best FM Signal. 94.1 covers Bexar quite well and the signal is good here in Canyon Lake (Comal County): however, 102.7 is a little stronger here.
I'm not privy to the details of Alpha's contract with the Cowboys, but that clause is obviously not in place in many other markets, like Lubbock, RGV, Midland, etc.

In Austin, the Cowboys' affiliate, KTXX, is the "best" signal that GAR owns, but that isn't saying much. It's a directional, class A FM from nearly 10 miles west of downtown.

Regardless, 102.7 is definitely better than 94.1, but it isn't orders of magnitude better in real world listening, especially if Alpha will turn off the stereo pilot on KTFM.

I doubt anybody else is going to simulcast sports talk on a FM.

Think a minute. There are so many dollars allocated for that male audience that Sports Talk delivers. Each slice of that pie means a smaller amount per station in theory. Exchange country, classic hits or rock for sports talk and people would be saying why do we need another (enter format) station?

Realize when you simulcast you are saying that FM cannot do any better than just share the AM's billing and perhaps it will do a little more in time with an FM signal. 104.5 can bill way more by itself than it can as a simulcast of 760.

I am amazed by how many posters that seem to think an infinite number of sports talkers can all make it in a single market. It's similar to posts that seem to think EMF will buy any and all AM or FM struggling in each market to run their two Christian formats. Once you cover the market, you don't add new stations! Only so many listen. Only so many donate.

I don't have access to the numbers, but are both stations exclusively reaching those demos? I find it hard to believe they're doing poorly in the 25-54, 18-49, or 18-34 demographics. The +6 numbers, while meaningless, are pretty encouraging given that both cover San Antonio pretty poorly (and I do mean very poorly)
KLEY averages 17th in 18-49 and KSAH is 19th. They are too far down to get many buys on the core demo for Hispanic ones.
At the very least, we should acknowledge that both stations' +6 numbers are putting KMYO and KZEP (both with much better coverage) to shame.
But those two are in a separate format and it is very distinct musically from either norteña or tejano. And the leader, KROM, does about the same as the total for KLEY and KSAH.

Remember, KXTN changed away from Tejano because the demographics were too old and not an easy sale. That format is about two decades beyond its shelf life.

I was observing recent flips iHeart pulled off in other markets. They flipped full power FM's in Seattle and Oklahoma City to sports. After a closer look, I see that iHeart migrated an existing sports station to FM in Seattle and launched a new station in Oklahoma City that partnered with an existing AM sports station in Norman.

Upon further consideration, I think that 92.5 would be a more likely spot for KTKR to end up. However, there may not be justification in migrating KTKR to a full-powered FM signal, but I think they should go for a translator at least. Time will tell if FM sports is a hit in San Antonio.

If you ask me they should bring Alternative back or active rock.
Alt 103 or Rock 103?

Here's the RadioInsight article. https://radioinsight.com/headlines/...-in-san-antonio-as-ktfm-flips-to-sports-star/
I second Alt Rock. I really enjoyed having 1033 the app years back and think they didn’t get a fair share here. U could barely here 1033 on the dial unless u were in certain spots of the city and their app wasn’t the greatest. Couldn’t even get them on iHeart app. But funny when they flipped to hip hop, then they got a spot on the iHeart app. And again funny, that format also flipped. Has San Antonio ever had a full blown high powered Alt Rock station? Before I die, would like to see one here. Anyway I digress. But I’ll be very curious to see how sports does on ktfm

Alpha signed a group deal with iHeart. Formatics had nothing to do with whether or not Alpha or any of its stations would be allowed on the app. Alpha's strategy is to be on as many streaming aggregators as it can. It also has deals with TuneIn and Audacy. All of its stations (or at least all of them that stream) are on all three apps and websites. The timing of any format changes near Alpha's addition to any of those apps is purely coincidental.

I don't think it was ever pure alternative, but the old KSAQ "Q96" came really close before it went full blown AOR as "96 Rock" in 1991 about six months after KISS made its disastrous switch to oldies around the end of July 1990. Q96 still mixed in a little pop, but it was heavily alternative, especially at night.

Wow. Interesting stuff. I do remember hearing of this Q96 before. Need to find an old playlist or something

The KSAQ call has bounced around the San Antonio area. I recall the mid-1970s version on 100.3 (Super Q) which I thought was a really good station.

The App 103.3 (Alternative)- Failed

G103.3(Classic HIp Hop) Failed

We 103.3 & 94.5- Failed

G103.3 Rhythmic A/C was a success. Univision saw an opportunity and launched Vibe 107.5. Alpha Media should bring the Rhythmic A/C format back on 103.3 with no DJs.

How many stations in SA need to play rap or pop? I also say the return of alternative (or even another active rocker) would be the next format on 103.3 to give it a second chance. It's sad to see 99.5 still running on a 2003 loop for the past 10 years thinking Creed is still a band these days.

We 94.5 is still there?

As for 103.3, it kept failing because it's signal was terrible. Not sure why they didn't have 250 watts to begin with, but on the northside during the old school rap G 103.3 days I couldn't hear it clearly. Same with The App.

94.1 in San Antonio is now All Sports. This is the first foray of Sports to a Full Signal in San Antonio. Should be interesting to see if a full signal FM Sports station gains traction in San Antonio.
The Houston Astros Radio Network currently doesn’t have an affiliate in SA (Ticket 760 dropped the Stros for the SA soccer team). I wonder if 94.1FM will become an Astros Radio affiliate…

The most successful stations in SA are airing Hits from the past KONO, Q101.9, Kiss, The Eagle, Jack-FM, Vibe, Magic, and 96.1 Now.

When it comes to Rhythmic A/C, I think of 103.5 KTU and Hits 97.3.

Hits 97.3(Cox Radio)

KTU (Iheart Radio)

How about the format on KXTJ-LP.

Low power FM stations don't get the same attention full power stations get. But KXTJ-LP isn't bad, it's run by one of the former "98.5 The Beat" DJs.
