KVI is Oldies

They were more of a "10-hit wonder", with 7 in the top 10.

I stand corrected. These guys were before my time, so I'm not quite that familiar with Gary Lewis & The Playboys. Aside from an old Liberty Records album that has "This Diamond Ring" on it (it's somewhere in my insane collection of vinyl), I'm not that much of a fan really....

The ads are a joke. At 5:30pm today....{a female voice} "I LOVE all of the on-air staff." (Or, something to that effect.) How is that possible when Tom & Marina went on THIS morning??

fremont, i heard that kvi promo last week and thought hte same thing as well. besides, my ears been likin' 104.5's music, since my XM antenna got busted in the truck. been likin' that very deep 70's R&B/soul stuff lately......the jockless, KMCQ even forced me to look up a song i never heard before called "sweet thing". turns out its by, chaka khan. not too familiar with her, but.......that is some fine sounding R&B stuff, 104.5! ya, i do sometimes run a little bit deeper than just hard core country.

I used to have 104.5 programmed in, but it lost out to either 96.1 or 104.3 (my current "Hail Mary" stations, i.e., when everything else is either an ad or "Wheel in the Sky," etc).

I'll give it a listen to see if George Clinton and his P-Funk band show up anytime soon.

I agree that those promos show a complete lack of sincerity and wish they hadn't done something so blatantly phony. That being said, sincerity & radio seem to mix like oil & water and that's nothing new. Many years ago I had to read liners for all-request weekends that were in actuality completely devoid of any requests unless by pure coincidence. Sure would be nice if the listeners were better respected.

Aside from that quibble, I must say that I really enjoy the pace that Tom & Marina bring in the morning. They keep the topics & contests coming but are in & out of them before boredom kicks in. It may not be completely innovative programming but it's smart.

Agreed; i've listened pretty regularly to 104.5 since January or whenever they officially launched and i've heard songs i've had to look up as well; their playlist is unbelievably deep and it's exactly what I like of an oldies station, deep playlists and a big music selection.

As for KVI, they're okay, but if they really want to make waves I would try and carry Dick Bartley's shows, or Gary Bryan's Rewind(featuring Dick Clark's Rock, Roll and Remember segments); I heard an aircheck a while back from 1988 from the first oldies KVI that advertised Dick Clark's show on KVI sunday mornings, so why not pick up Gary Bryan's show? plus he worked in Seattle in the past(Gary Bryan) so it's a natural fit.

And possibly pick up Wolfman Jack reruns, or not, it really depends on what KVI wants to do

I have 104.5 as a preset on all my radios(well CD Players, but they have presets); I don't know about George Clinton but having just turned the station on I heard the last few moments of "Feels So Good" by Chuck Mangione and then "Back in the USSR" by the Beatles; what other terrestrial AM or FM station would play those two back to back? None that I can think of that's for sure, at least not in Seattle, well other then 104.5 of course ;D

Just had a non-industry (but pretty avid follower, especially of TV) friend just discover KVI is "classic rock" - his tweeted words.

Seems like Fisher needs to engage in some promotion for this thing ...

I don't think Fisher cares what people call it, provided they listen.

Went from Chaka Khan "To Be Real" to KC & The Sunshine Band "I'm Your Boogie Man" this AM. Then, some Righteous Brothers for good measure. I like it.

Whoops...sounds like a major sound code error!

Chaka Khan? Or Cheryl Lynn?

I think Randy was trying to say that Ed Sullivan introduced Gerry and the Pacemakers as "Gary and the Pacemakers". Gary Lewis IS one of "Jerry's kids"!

No, what I'm saying is that Mark Christopher promoted "Gary" and The Pacemakers on PBS's Ed Sullivan Special. It caught me off guard the Mark would say "Gary" and The Pacemakers instead of Gerry... that's all.

You think that's good, as I type this KMCQ just played Desmond Dekker's "Isrealites" and now 104.5 is playing a Ray Charles song, yet another reason why KMCQ is so awesome; either here or somehwhere else someone should serioulsy make a KMCQ playlist or a yes.com type of thing for KMCQ, the songs that are played would turn some serious heads.

Anytime Ray Charles gets played on radio in year 2010 is a good thing. I grew up with 1600 KUUU, never got tired of "What'd I Say" or "Crying Time". Oldies radio is so limited these days. Don't know what will happen with KMCQ in the long run, but I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

here is just a few interesting pieces of ear candy i picked up on 104.5, while my XM antenna has been down this last week and a half: 1) something stupid- frank and nancy sinatra. 2) rocking chair-gwen mcrae. 3) the chokin kind-joe simon. 4) busted-ray charles. 5) oh babe what would you say-hurricane smith. 6) cloud nine-temptations. 7) moonlight feels right-starbuck. 8) stop look and listen-stylistics. 9) the way you look tonight-frank sinatra. 10)convoy-cw mccall (actually, i hate that song, but cw mccall has some kick ass country truckin music, got all his albums on vinyl, and/or CD in my library).

like several posters have stated: "enjoy it while it lasts". but, back to XM for me tonight, as the new antenna arrived via USPS..yee haw!

Indeed, although I have an idea that could be done with KMCQ, and even though to some it might be a long shot, it's worth checking in to:

KSER, KEXP and a station in Michigan that's an NPR station and plays oldies that I listen to online(WGVU AM) are all non-commercial stations, they basically survive on listener donations and listener support, so since those stations are succesful and there is an oldies station that is non commerical and does well(albeit in another part of the country) and KMCQ is doing OK without commercials and there are people that like it, why couldn't KMCQ apply for non-commercial status?

You could hire some Seattle radio legends, and say "OK, what we have here is a non-com station, so play whatever oldies you want", I mean why couldn't it work?

Danny Holiday's doing his Rock and Roll Time Machine on KSER in Everett, and that's non-commercial, so why not have KMCQ as the South Puget Sound's version of KSER, but as all classic hits/oldies? I think it would do very well personally, and with the right DJs could have a great following like the other non commercial music stations do.

You could have South Puget Sound buisnesses as underwriters(Covington, Auburn, Kent, etc.) as well, if KMCQ can do this then they should do it; problem is I don't know if First could make 104.5 non-commercial because of its dial position.

But it's worth a shot anyway, and I think they could try it

It's still incredibly amusing to watch the minions dissect the KMCQ playlist like it was rocket science.

I bet whoever put the iTunes library in place is laughing his/her butt off at this "expert" analysis.
