KVIL low ratings for March 2011

WLTE in Minneapolis is another CBS AC with poor numbers.

Their playlist is a little aggressive, but it's not too bad at all and it have some decent songs as well. Ouch!, ranked 18th place with a 2.8 share.

Most CBS Fresh FM AC have poor numbers.

It seems for whatever reason that CC AC stations do better year round than CBS ACs. There are some exceptions of course, CBSs WRCH/Hartford always does well and CC does have some ACs that take a typical post-holiday dive and don't recover until next Christmas. season.

CBS's WEAT/West Palm Beach does well too, actually they're actually ranked 1st place with 7.9 share in the West Palm Beach market.

I'm guessing that's because of the average age of people in West Palm Beach

As of June 2011 KVIL is standing at 13th place with a 3.2 share in the Arbitron Ratings. They still not doing good, but they just barely climbed up a little bit in the ratings, slowly out of the flip numbers.

But hasn't the sound of KEZK changed a bit?
They might have changed it, but their playlist still looks pretty AC'ish to me. Definitely more than the other Fresh FM's. I never really paid them much attention before.

Perhaps KVIL should re-brand themselves as Fresh and follow a playlist similar to that of KEZK? It's not that different from what they're already doing, but it may generate some buzz. I think if they just kept the playlist the same for KVIL and updated the imaging and brand to "Fresh", it may help them a little

What I don't understand is why AC does so much better in Houston then in Dallas. Sure they are two different markets and one AC is owned by CBS and the other is owned by Clear Channel. But who owns it shouldn't matter. So what makes KODA rated at 7.3 in Houston and CBS's KVIL rated at 3.2, both numbers are from the past June ratings. I would think if AC is on top in Houston the same should be said for Dallas.

KVIL could rebrand as 103.7 Fresh FM as it may help. I know KVIL went a make over just a few years ago. Forget how long ago.

True, KVIL should rebrand itself as "103.7 Fresh FM" which would help them. Or, They could go back to just branding themselves as "103.7 KVIL" which they had for decades before they rebranded themselves as "103.7 Lite FM" in Dec 2005.

That is a very interesting question. One thing that may help KODA is the fact that there is not an extremely strong classic hits or adult hits station in the market. I think they have The Eagle or something like that claiming to play classic hits, but that's almost like classic rock. In most markets where there is not a true pop classic hits station (such as KLUV, WCBS, WMJI, etc), the AC station typically does better because they tend to play more older music from the 70s and 80s that can not be heard anywhere else, like KODA does in Houston.
This isn't true in every market, but I've noticed it in a lot, especially smaller ones. The main reason I listen to the AC format is because I like the older music that no one else plays in my market. I enjoy the Hot AC and CHR formats also.

Dallas, on the other hand, has a strong adult hits (Jack FM) and classic hits (KLUV) station, both of which happen to be owned by CBS. The Hot AC doesn't do that badly, either. So KVIL is just kind of "there." They can't really go for a certain audience like KODA can.

Plus, IMO, KODA looks like a better programmed station. JMO

That makes a lot of sense with KLUV and Jack. But I would still figure KVIL to do well as their surpose to sound soft then the sounds of KLUV and Jack. As for all 3 CBS owned stations I don't see them going anywhere, maybe something different to help KVIL as I doubt CBS would flip the only AC in the Dallas market.

Also in both markets I didn't see this till just now that Christian AC does well in both Dallas and Houston markets.

I've noticed that Christian AC has done well in a lot of southern and midwestern markets with PPM. I would imagine the Christian AC and mainstream AC's may share some audience.

In the Oklahoma City market, both Classic Hits KOMA and AC KMGL are doing well and both of them happens to be owned by Renda Broadcasting. Hmm... Maybe Renda have both of their stations' playlists worked out well.

I see that KOMA have a little bit of lean in AC playing The Police - Every Breath You Take, Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is, Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You, Bill Medley - I've Have The Time Of My Life (w/Jennifer Warnes), etc.

I also see that KMGL have a little bit of lean in Classic Hits playing Garry Wright - Dream Weaver, Elton John - Crocodile Rock, The Eagles - Heartache Tonight, Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl, Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around And Fell In Love, Firefall - You Are The Woman, etc.

I wondering if there's another market with a successful Classic Hits and AC owned by the same broadcast family.

In Portland CC owns #1 AC KKCW and #2 Classic Hits KLTH.

They don't usually do extremely well, but have done well enough to co-exist for years: B106.7 (AC) and Magic 98.5 (Classic Hits) in Columbia, SC.

This station is doing terribly - just a 2.4 6+ in October. If I were CBS, I'd stunt with Christmas music and do a format like WWFS in NYC after the holidays, or just flip to something else entirely. It looks like Dallas isn't an AC market.

Its horrible ratings for KVIL, just don't know why AC can't perform well in Dallas like it does in Houston. Sure both are different markets but both are top markets in Texas.

As for KVIL I don't think going to a format like Fresh 102.7 NY would work because their is already KDMX Mix 102.9 the Hot AC owned by Clear Channel serving the market. CBS could try doing CHR and compete with KISS.

Now the best move for CBS Radio Dallas to do with KVIL is to go Christmas 103.7 Lite FM right now with a format flip to country come the new year. Reason for that is Cumulus now owns both country stations in the market. CBS needs to get a jump on that before Clear Channel does.

The KVIL calls go good with a country station too.
