KZLA Goes Dance and Rick Dees?

I know they are running Movin out of the production room but the board ops there really suck.

They are likely running all this on a computer with little human interaction. Most likely, someone is setting the end tones on the elements kind of loose.

I would think a new station starting out wouldn't run 10 commercials in a row, a good way to make people tune out. I also wouldn't call it a dance station although they do play some old dance hits from the 80's and 90's. But then I'm spoiled listeneing to Fresh FM in Amsterdam, even though they play the same songs a little too often.

They have board ops 24/7. That's confirmted. And they all suck. It's not just being loose as MANY times they are hitting the next element too early, burying the natural or cold ending or intro of songs, playing a rejoiner then going into another spot, dead air, etc. . If, until the new air staff is in place, they had this only on computer 24/7 it would be much better.

Except on this board, no one is calling it a dance station. The fomat is (Adult) Contempoary Rhythmic (Pop) Hits. Pure dance stations are niche formats and don't work. For the handful of dance formatted stations in America that are left, there isn't one that is sucessful (i.e. San Francisco, Phoenix etc). And just to save anyone the trouble, KTU is not a dance station.

A few posts back somebody was wondering aloud why KZLA seemed to be in such a hurry to get this station on the air. That can be summed up in one word: Tunathon. I'm actually suprised nobody here made the connection. Emmis clearly saw a GIANT opportunity to launch the station on a day when KBIG was talking all day and playing far less music than the norm. It was brilliant, in my opinion, that they saw the opportunity and ran with it.

As far as Dees... From what I've heard he will, in fact, be working out of his new studios in Burbank (which were being built before Talks with Emmis even began) and he will be using a rotary board (a brand new one, from what I've heard).

I would disagree. I think it was the fact it was the opening night of the Tim McGraw-Faith Hill sold out concerts. Emmis was counting on the outrage from country music fans and the publicty that they would receive from it. They got it and more (Watching the local 10 PM and 11 PM newscasts last Thursday night, most of the tv stations here did stand-ups at the concert while doing the story about the flip). I even saw a story about the flip published in the North Korea Times. I don't think I've seen a format flip ever get as much publicity as this did locally, nationally and even internationally.

The Tunathon got zero publicity here in L.A.. I heard one mention from Mark Kriski on Channel 5 after Dees called in. Dees also told Kriski "we've got to get you off that other station". They love Kriski at Clear Channel because of the publicity he brings KBIG no matter how bad he is.

Now, I'm just waiting for Clear Channel to announce Whoopi is taking Tuna's shift. Gotta think they want to take some thunder out of Dees and Movin. Also, It will be interesting to see how many people bail CCLA to work with their old pal Rick Dees. And how many of Dees old advertisers will bail Clear Channel and go with Dees, too.

New trends show KYSR down to its lowest ratings in memory. I'm sure they will give it another whirl - but they at least would have an exclusive sell if they considered Country...

KBIG is definitely going to do some serious marketing and branding to help them in this fight - but they are also under a 2 share right now.

Jack continues to dominate in the Anglo 25-54 arena... bottom line.

How KZLA will do with Movin' - only time will tell...

So does anyone have the inside scoop? How did Emmis pull this off so effectively? Where did they build the new format that no one was the wiser?

Nobody at KZLA knew. The PD didn't find out until that morning after arriving at work. Shawn Parr didn't find out until just before he hit his last song. Even most of Rick Dees friends didn't know. This was the best kept secret in Hollywood in years. And that is tough with boards like this around.

Movin is running a really cool promo for Dees. It's tightly edited snipets from last Thursday and Friday Los Angeles tv news programs announcing and welcoming back Rick Dees with many L.A. tv voices. Very cool. It's great to hear some creative, professional promos once again.

The longer I listen to this new Movin' 93.9, the more I like it. It seems like they are playing more 80s and 90s R&B over the last couple of hours than they were in the previous days. I've heard some great 80s and 90s dance classics too ;D. Rumors by Timex Social Club is one my personal favorites. It's beginning to remind me of the early days of Power 106 crossed with the old B-100. I know it's too early for them to start tweaking the format, but they are playing several songs today that I didn't hear in the prior days. It also sounds good when they start the top of the hour with a current track, which they have been consistently. I wonder if they plan to have mixshows at all. I just wish they would add some current dance tracks. Based on the way it sounds today, I'm guessing KBIG is their most direct competition.

One more note: I can remember when Emmis bought KZLA back in 2000 and everyone on this board including Glenn was so sure Emmis would flip KZLA right away to a Rhythmic format. Well, I guess they were partially right...it just took 6 years for Emmis to do it. I'm glad it finally happened.

Wow, they're really bringing back a lot of songs that haven't been on L.A. radio in quite some time...keep it up Emmis!!!

Now they are selling t-shirts to support getting country music back on the radio in L.A.

I thought this was one great paragraph in this blog. I hope it comes true soon:

Seacrest, on the other hand, is linked with American Idol, and in an era where what is hot one minute is stone cold dead the next, when the innevitable fall of Idol occurs, Seacrest will fall along with it. He'll be relegated to those VH1 "Whatever happened to..." shows, while Dees will continue to cash checks from various radio station managers.

I could be wrong, but I think the debut of Movin' 93.9 with Rick Dees in the morning and the rest of the airstaff might have the same effect on LA radio as when K-Earth was launched with Robert W. Morgan and
The Real Don Steele returned to the airwaves.

Country in LA, OC, RIV/SB works if you have the right PD programming it! One who is street smart and hard core Country!

KZLA NEVER had a PD like that! NEVER!

Gee, no offense, but I'm not that excited about KBIG's move to 93.9. Oops, KBIG is still up the dial! Really, so far all everything I've heard except for the imaging sounds like KBIG. The only real advantage 93.9 has is Rick Dees, otherwise, it's more of the same thing that I hear at 104.3... I'm sure you'll all disagree with me, just my 2 cents...

Star still ills more as alternative AC than KZLA did.

Well what fine mess this company has put thereselves in.
KZLA had higher ratings than Kbig
There alot adult top 40 radio stations
around the country pretty much same old same old.
Movin' is a joke! I give 4 to 6 months and goes off the air
nobody cares about Rick Dee's, you can't entertain the teenagers anymore
youre to old. !
I think emminis corperation idea of super, fabulous, radio format is
uneducated and greedy.
I will laugh when it fails
the days morning show people like Mark & Kim and Mark & Brian etc.
lets say they will be last, because radio is dying has been for long
time. Now its on life support.
even satellite radio is slowly loosing interest.
:p

With all do respect you remind me of a redneck that says: "Gotter dun"
Unlike the respect that you showed for the Dee's.

Movin is not targeted at teens.

Regardless of demographic, nobody really cares.
Rick Dee's is full it , and himself.
this is not the 80's anymore.
there is nothing new about Movin
as somebody posted on another KZLA topic there are about 4 or five stations like it.
I just listen my cds more often than radio.
here's a idea, how about radio station that plays the entire album for the artist not
just the hits.
I would think it increase music sales ???
