kzps has flipped

This is awesome...I have wanted a local station like this since I heard the one in Abilene about 12 years ago!

In 2001, Houston's KIKK-FM 95.7 morphed into country/Americana/classic rock as "95-7 Kick FM, Houston's Country Alternative." That's probably the closest to what KZPS is like as there was no "Nashville country" on it. The difference is that KZPS seems to be majority classic rock (so far) whereas KIKK-FM was majority Americana/Texas country.

Yes, the format isn't really that new, and the viability of it has yet to be proven beyond places like the Texas Hill Country. Stations like the Ranch, the Range and the multi-[small] city Lone Star country chain in south central Texas aren't runaway success stories.

Chip is right; Houston's once proud KIKK was pretty close to what KZPS is doing musically now. They did, indeed, morph into it in 2001. But the last days of KIKK were painful, and the format was a colossal failure. (Ask Houston board stalwart Chuck Tiller just how bad it was.) In November 2002 they changed to KHJZ, playing Smooth Jazz.

That's the whole point... I think the format isn't so far off base now that I've listened for a while. They'll need to get some real personalities on it though soon to really make it cook.

They are playing songs I haven't heard on the radio in years...Exactly what people around here have been whining about. Plus they are mixing in complimentary tunes from the "country" genre...I don't know many into the outlaw/americana sound that don't like classic rock.

It will be interesting to see how it goes.

That was in the other thread. Drudge is just a hybrid of People magazine- The National Enquirer on the internet.

I like it. I find it so very refreshing to hear some DIFFERENT music on the tubes. I love the energy of the unexpected.
Yeah, there may be some songs I don’t like, but I thirst for the refreshment of a rare gem, and that will keep me listening through a dud or two. It's the first station I've heard in years that tempts me off Sirius.

Just caught a Willie Nelson liner:
“I don’t even know what traffic on the tens means. And if you wanna know the weather, look out the window.”

This is fun stuff.

For all the bad raps we give the broadcast barons, let's at least give 'em a hand for trying something different.

Give me a break, they could do that same thing in the Classic Rock genre by abandoning the 30 song playlists. Does a station have to force country down our throats to be different? Christ, somebody just get rid of the research and skim the hits syndrome. They could do this no spots, deeper approach with any style music.

The top 40 ideology in every format is whats killing radio. Then pile on deregulation and the eventual milktoasting effects from double duties on staff, voicetracking, etc...

Different is great, but if we have to eat cowpaddies to get it..no thanks.

I agree with IRA it is different, and the powers that be are happy.because folks are talking about it. Willie sounds Like "JACK". The music sounds just like when they were KAFM in 1975,so have they gone full circle? Sounds like it.

This format started in Austin in the mid 70's with KOKE...Poped up in the Texas Hill Country in the mid 80's moved to San Antonio in the late 80's then back to the Hill Country in 1991....I doubt CC or any other major group can pull it off...and it is not their fault...it will be a hard sell in any ratings driven market.

100.3 Jack-FM already has liners about the flip:

"This is where classic rock listeners go when their station is no longer classic.......or rock!"

OUCH!

Goodbye old friend KZPS, THE classic rock station........(it was a pleasure to work on it for a while...)

And another:

"How do you like that banjo pickin' music on the classic rock station?"

CBS was evidently ready for this flip......They could not have gotten these liners done that quick (or could they? ;)
Now if they could fix KVIL...oh forget that!

Well, I live 100 miles south of Dallas, so I can't pick up the Bone. I will just have to treat the country songs the way I did commercials on the old KZPS. When one comes on just switch to another station. Then eventually come back and see whats on.

I don't think it will work. It will be Spanish before long. Hope I am wrong.

I have 6 presets on my radio. [vehicle]

1. KLLI
2. KZPS
3. KLUV
4. KJKK
5. KBRQ [Waco]
6. KEOM

The only time I don't switch when a commercial comes on is weekdays 3-7 listening to KLLI.

Damn! As I was typing this they played a Jerry Jeff Walker tune. Yep, I like him.

Why did Russ have to be best of today. Gggrrrr!

What I don't like is they play country tunes no one has ever heard. If you are going to play that crap, play something that is known.

Pardon me if this has already been asked...

Is the KZPS flip CC's response to The Wolf? This can't just be coincidence, can it?

I think it sounds good. I agree that the right air talent will complete the package. It will be interesting to see if CC does it right and sticks with it for a while. I also have to say that I'm more than a bit shocked that this is coming from CC. Where is the completely bland mediocre product that we've all become accustomed to over the years? ;)

TELL ME, PLEASE... this is not true. If it is, then all of the love cards we have sent John Sebastian's way will have to rescinded for paper in his bird cage. You know the one? It has all those "whole nother animal" bumper stickers on it. The same one that he looks at puffing dollar sign smoke rings. ;D

you mean a hybrid of 2 musical genres, with imaging by a recognizable non-radio voice?

Although I'm in The Netherlands and Clear Channel blocks anyone from outside the USA who attempts to listen online, it somehow worked. At least, today. I've been listening for about two hours now and I think LONE STAR sounds great. It doesn't really matter if the format is new or not, as long as it sounds good. My gut feeling says it will be a success. The only thing that could be better is the flow. Sometimes it really rocks for ten minutes, then the tempo drops for ten minutes.

The logo looks great and the positioning is good as well. Perhaps a bit more talk and ID's would make the station come alive more. But other than some minor details, it's a great format. And not doing conventional commercials is great as well.

I've hated Clear Channel for as long as I can remember, but this is a brave move.

nahh KZPS responding to the Wolf and Kscs responding to the WOLF? NO way;) KSCS is redoing their format and Terry Dorsey will sign his show on with Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner" Hawkeye will read from "Today in Woodstock History" Meanwhile at KVIL Lunestra and Nytol will file a joint action lawsuit claiming the format is putting them out of business.
