My point is that iHeart isn't blowing up FM music stations for news/talk the way Audacy and Cumulus has. I stand by that.

I would be shocked if they replaced KEGL with a simulcast of an AM talk station.

My point is they don’t have to, they can simulcast their AM news/talk stations on FM translators & HD signals.
 
We’re back to discussing KEGL again. Oh, what fun times.

Getting beaten by KNTU is genuinely humiliating though. What a rise for the station, though. Remember when it was only pulling 0.1s as a jazz station? It definitely has listeners now! KNTU has undoubtedly stolen a few listeners from KVIL too, likely because of getting to some buzz artists faster and still being committed to classic 80’s new wave and college rock as part of their gold rotation.

Speaking of KVIL, Alt 103.7 is continuing to eat the Eagle’s lunch. They kicked off their morning show today with “Last Resort” by Papa Roach and the new Deftones and Pierce The Veil singles. They know exactly what the KEGL audience wants and they continue to serve it up hour after hour with consistency. They added the new Evanescence song this week as well. Just enough new and old loud rock music to give the tired and boring Audacy Alternative playlist a nice kick like Bold Party Chex Mix.

Except in the unlikely scenario KEGL comes up with a bold strategy to defeat KVIL, it’s going to stay this way.

What you point out is that the people who want a certain music can get it right now. There's no reason for KEGL to play it, because it's already being played. There's no upside for them to play music already being played at KVIL or KNTU. That lane is already taken. So why change? If they want to pursue a unique strategy, there are other ways to go.

Do you know what Deftones, Pierce The Veil, and Evanescence sound like? KVIL stepped into KEGL’s lane; that’s why KVIL has been beating up KEGL the last few years, they’re playing KEGL’s music better than KEGL is.

So once again, why would iHeart care about that? If the goal is to get better ratings, the formats to go after are in the Top 10. Not KVIL.

I suggest it should just cut all the music and talk and go fully automated with one repeating line. The Message? “No, you dialed it in wrong. KXT is 91.7 not 97.1”🤣

I view it as a halfway point between KXT’s poppy side and KVIL’s less abrasive rock side. KNTU definitely plays the hits more than KXT and covers the poppier “alt rock” more than KXT does. But KXT doesn’t just play “alt rock,” and KXT has a bigger playlist. All three stations have found their niche. Though KXT’s playlist and style is absolutely not conducive to having a ratings juggernaut. That’s fine, as long as the donations are covering expenses. Though, the loss of CPB money is probably making that more difficult.

There was a time when that was broadly true. I remember back when "The Edge" (KDGE) signed on at 94.5 and people who wanted to listen to them would go through some trouble to receive their signal. (The 94.5 signal was pretty poor in downtown Dallas and points further south.)

Of course that was 35 years ago. I see no evidence that there is anything other than an insignificant number of listeners who are willing to do that today.

There seem to be a lot of unrealized newstalk shares in DFW and this might be an opening. It's hard for me to think all the historic newstalk listening moved to The Ticket.

iHeart has existing news resources in the other points of the Texas Triangle (KTRH and WOAI). Ben and Skin could be kept with some retooling and reformatting along with the Mavs and TCU football.

Obviously, they would need some more compelling local programming, which is a big big question mark, but I doubt it would do worse than the Eagle is now. I mean the cume is good, but listeners just don't stick around.

Love Michael Barry. Very entertaining and 1190 signal doesn't service the northern part of the metroplex well.

Hey, WBAP was up 9% this month
from 1.1 to 1.2😀. A year ago they were usually 3+ in the ratings. If they go up 9% every month, in about 2 years they’ll be back to their numbers from a year ago. They still run lots of commercials on the morning show.

AM listening mostly evaporated because only three AM signals cover the entire market 24/7. It's really more of a miracle that WBAP and KRLD hung on as long as they did. It wasn’t that long ago that at least WBAP got more listening than the entire band gets today. I believe the listing for WBAP is combined between the AM and FM. So, AM is likely less than 3% total listening.
