I think Mark Larsen's shtick is dated -- from a time when the pathway to success was seen as formats that rigidly separated by race, and a time when people actually paid attention to the Uhuru movement in St. Petersburg. The audience that listened to him in his 90's heyday on 970 were boomers who grew up in schools divided by riots over integration in the 60's and 70's, where blacks and whites may have been in the same school but hung out in separate cliques.
Contrast that with the life experiences of today's teens and twentysomethings. Nick Schuyler talking about the agony of losing his friends at sea -- black and white. A black teenager's white high schools friends in Bradenton mourning his early demise at the hands of a gunman. Larsen's generation knew "some of my best friends are..." as a CYA expression of insincerity. The generation moving into talk radio demographics in a few years can use it without a hint of irony. In fact, they probably wouldn't see why anybody would find that to be a strange statement. Larsen's act will never make it with that cohort, but he'll probably be done with radio by the time they enter their prime talk radio years anyway.
York made his biggest error by trying to copy a 90's shtick aimed at a generation other than his own and try to make it work in 2008-09. Sometimes it would seem as though he were trying to make some kind of ironic statement by pawing through racial issues on the air -- but he didn't try hard enough.

Ok I've seen this criticism multiple times by the same person, and since I've finally found nothing better to do I have to respond to this.
I'll be the first to admit that when I first started I was hardly more than someone with a younger voice trying to do his best Mark Larsen impression. I even found myself using some of his little lines and catchphrases, which I had to quickly force myself to stop doing (Mark once came in the studio and threatened to smack me..). It was easy to do when I sat and listened to him 3 hours every single day...
But if I'm honest with myself I'd say after the first 4 months on the air I stopped trying to imitate others and actually just opened the paper and started talking about what I saw going on in Tampa. Now, since I've been listening to my airchecks the past few weeks even I admit I was FAR from the host I wanted to be, but to sit here and classify me as "Larsen lite" I think is just not factual.

I have said here before that you sucked when you first started but you did go right to work and started making your show MUCH better.
I had a feeling you would not last as you were an expence that they could not afford. I thank them for at least trying to be a local radio station and I thank you for many hours of great entertainment.

Beck and Gallagher are still employed... the question answers itself.
You don't have to have talent to be employed... Todd Schnitt is a perfect example.
