Leno will have new set

So am I understanding this correctly. Johnny Carson's old studio in which he hosted The Tonight show for many many years is now the studio for Access Hollywood? Is that right?

Yes.

That's depressing to think about. I don't know which is more depressing, this or the fact that the Dr. Oz show is in the old Late Night studio now.

Or the fact that Fallon has his show in the old Tonight Show studio in New York. I like his new Late Night house band The Roots, but there's something about Fallon and the rest of the show that I don't like.

Back to the topic, I hope they will eventually abandon the Leno @ 10 set and that awkward desk he uses for his Headlines segment. I would like to see the last Tonight Show desk he used be brought back if they haven't got rid of it from storage. It looked better than all of his other earlier Tonight Show desks that I've seen.

Can't "Access Hollywood" be taped in a tiny little room? That's not the type of show that needs much room. Just think about how large the studio was for Carson with the full band, the audience and center stage too. I don't understand the need to use such a large studio for a tabloid show that could be taped in a studio the size of my living room.

Naw, where would they fit all of those egos?

To set the record straight, the NBC studio complex in Burbank which also holds facilities for CNBC and MSNBC has been sold to a developer. Conan's Tonight Show had a set built on the Universal lot and ultimately all of the TV studios and offices will end up on land adjacent to the Universal lot in Universal City (Los Angeles). Somebody else will have to supply the details but I doubt that Jay Leno will be housed in Burbank, I don't know but assumed that his prime time show was based somewhere on the Universal lot as well.

Leno's 10 p.m. show was shot at Studio 11 at NBC Burbank. NBC still houses Access Hollywood and Days of Our Lives in Burbank. I've heard rumors that Leno is staying at Studio 11 and that he's moving back to Studio 3 (where he did Tonight for most of its run). He may eventually move to Universal -- or the next host might -- but I believe that NBC is leasing studio space back for various purposes.

I understood about them leasing back space after the sale but I was wondering I guess how far they are on construction at Universal City. They build a studio for Conan and I doubt that it will be dismantled but it would make sense to move Leno there eventually since the idea was to tie the people coming to be in the Tonight Show audience to the City Walk and other attractions on the Universal property.

Access Hollywood could be taped on any of the many sound stages in and around Burbank and Studio City. You would want the shows with studio audiences to get priority to be relocated to the Universal lot or across teh street where eventually all NBC operations will be located.

Leno mentioned on his show this evening that when he goes back to 11:35, He WILL have a desk again....

also, leno's last 10pm show is Tuesday (2/9).

In that studio there is still a star painted on the floor marking where Johnny used to stand and deliver his monologue.

I was told that the star is no longer there, but there is a mark on the floor where Johnny's desk used to be. Oddly enough, the mark was placed there when Howie Mandell had a brief talk show in the same studio. But yes, it's tragic that Billy Bush is on the same stage Johnny once called home.

Also, I see that Leno's final guest is Ashton Kutcher. How many people will try to start the rumor that Ashton is "punking" this whole thing?

Back to the issue of sets. NBC, and all networks, have no interest in the nostalgic aspects of what set housed what program. It is all business. How can they utilize the facilities to the most effective value to the network. That's all it us. That's why Dr. Oz is in the old Letterman studio, and Access is in the old Carson studio. Sets and studios are just "equipment" to make the whole system run. Pure and simple. (However, I find the history of these studios as fascinating as anyone!)

I am glad the networks keep using the same studios for different productions. It almost keeps the studio "alive" so to speak. A studio still humming with activity is better than an empty one. It would have been silly to close Carson's studio after the Tonight Show for nostalgic reasons. I see it as no big deal that Access H'wood is in Carson's old studio. Maybe one day that studio will house another production that will be a smash hit similar in scale to Carson's Tonight Show. You never know.

NBC's most active days were back in the 1980's. So many shows were taped at NBC back then. Not only Carson, but a full schedule of game shows. NBC used to send out a monthly schedule with ticket requests. It was a calender with all the tapings of various shows listed for each day. Most days had multiple tapings. For example

"Sale Of The Century 10:45 AM
"Wheel Of Fortune 1:15 PM
The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson 5:30 PM

Even the weekend schedule was often full. Those studios were very active! They used them all. NBC was like the Disneyland of Television back then. Growing up I remember how I wanted to live in one of those houses directly across the street so I could be close to all the fun. But unfortunately those days are gone. Now I think the studios are mostly empty. The only show still there that has an audience is Leno.

Carson moved The Tonight Show to Burbank in 1972.

I know Carson was there since 1972. My point is that the height of activity at that complex was in the 70's and 80's. Things slowed way down in the 90's.

Let's not forget the Prospect Studios. When it was the ABC Television Center, there was LOTS of activity on that lot, especially in the '70s and '80s with Family Feud, American Bandstand, General Hospital, That's Incredible, and countless other shows.

The only activity there these days besides General Hospital? "Grey's Anatomy" and that's it!

But hey, at least CBS Television City has always been busy from day one!

I thought your original post stated that Carson taped in NY into the 80's. If I misread that, sorry. Yes, much more activity back in the day at Burbank. I remember taking the NBC Burbank tour in the early 80's and it was a hotbed of production. I also attended a Carson taping at the same time, what a great experience. I even got on screen during an audience bit, wish I could find that recording somewhere, but it is most likely long gone and erased!

My first trip to NBC was in 1983 when I was 15 years old. My brother and I wanted to see Carson, but there were no more tickets left. The only other show taping that day was the game show Dream House with Bob Eubanks. That was fine with me. I love game shows and that was the first one that I ever got to see in person. I had a blast. Earlier that day we took the NBC tour and we hung out in the Carson studio as well. I didn't get to see Johnny, but I did get to see the crew sitting on the audience stairs eating their bag lunches. That was kind of funny. Just being in that room felt like magic. I wonder who owns Johnny's multi colored curtain these days.
