Lights out @ Shine 96.7

Something tells me they're playing all the formats they won't be flipping to until they actually go to the real thing.

That said, 5 p.m. would be an ideal time to formally flip with the afternoon rush hour.

RadioInsight said the same thing about them playing what they won't be flipping to. I'm inclined to agree. So far, it's been Variety Hits, New Rock, Urban, CHR, and now Classic Rock.

This could go on until the weekend...who knows.

Sports makes sense. They've already shown they can't compete in music formats with that signal.

Amazing that they let that bonehead decision drag out so long.

This hour is Oldies. I think the last one was AC. The Oldies format is the best sounding and most logical one they've had yet.

The signal has/had potential for a music format. 96.7's signal is better than 97.7's and look how well the latter is doing with no overhead, given its coverage. They should have ditched Shine for Variety/Adult Hits last year to keep the dislocated MY listeners in the fold but Cox grabbed that chance.

Sports makes sense, but I don't know if you stunt just to start simulcasting an existing station. I think they'll go with another music format, but who knows. Nothing can be worse than Shine. Nothing.

96.7 The Road? Classic Rock?

Absolutely beyond stupid if that's going to be the format. Back to adult hits on the format wheel right now.

Wow, that is incredibly stupid if that's what they're doing. Rock 101, as outdated as they are, still does fairly well. Definately not a format I'd ever see making much of a difference. Still think CHR to complete with B or, as you mentioned, maybe oldies would work.

Don't know if that's another one of those sites to throw off people, but looks pretty official to me.

probably smart if it is classic rock. back to what they launched the buzzard for to help move cc country stations up. 967 wil never do well in the ratings based on their power. with 97.7 and 98.5 lots of the endercom stations are being attacked.

I'm guessing "The Road" (whatever kind of name that is) will be similar to Clear Channel's classic rock stations like "The Brew" in the midwest/west and "The D" (in Detroit); somewhat younger skewing (more late 70s-80s centered) than mainstream classic rockers like WROQ, and don't have the talk-heavy morning shows like JB&B or Bob & Tom.

No doubt, it will sound better than WROQ. Most classic rock stations do. They sound pretty tired. I just doubt there's room for it after 97.7 and 101.1. Could rain on 97.7's parade a little bit and take a little out of 101.1. Classic Rock fits well with the USC sports. It's better than Shine, but just doesn't seem that logical.

93.3 and 101.1 are being attacked, and rightly so. 106.3 will be as well when 94.5 goes talk. The rockers have gotten to slide by for years. It's about time somebody did enough to light a fire under them.

Strange that they have the new site up and even the stream for 96.7 on I Heart Radio now shows The Road logo and Classic Rock, but they're still playing other music. Just heard Ace of Base.

It'd be a pretty elaborate hoax with the site, all the logos and stuff. I think they'll officially flip overnight.

I can see where it might align well with USC sports, etc. Still think it's going to be rough going. Looked back at the most recent ratings book and it was posted that Rock 101 was #2 in the all-important 24-54 demo. Doesn't make much sense. Think between Chuck and Rock 101, classic rock is covered fairly well.

i am not sure you can flip a swtch as only a web person would know to a website facebook and all the elelments to change a station overnight. i think the handful that post here think listeners are sitting on the edge waiting too good programmig, marketing, and word of mouth will make every station what it is. we'll see how the translator stations last and 967 wtih the low power.

As a ploom of white smoke escapes from the top of the conference room door, we can only ponder that the Corporate Geeeen-yusies at Clear Channel have arrived at...still...yet...another format for the ever-struggling 96.7 frequency. Gee, I certainly hope that they allowed the local GM to attend.
As far as what it will eventually be,...Hmmmmm? They could tease around for days. Let's all take the logic of the old zoo keeper, who said, "Sometimes You Just Gotta Wait, and See What The Monkey Will Do.". Personally, I enjoyed "The Buzzard"! From the beginning, "Shine" didn't have a prayer. Now, if it is an attempt at Classic Rock, then we go back to the ratings strategy: Shave some of the male listeners off of Rock 101, so Whistle can have an easier toot. As for a true Classic Rock, WROQ fails the litmus test. Just compare it to the ones on Satellite, and the understanding is quite clear. Their good book can be easily explained. Since Rock 101 sounds the same as it did 3-4-5-6-7 years ago, they did well, due to all the other stations failing to miss their standard mark. Example: Years ago, Bo Griffin ran MAGIC so far in the dirt, that Entercom was willing to pay her to stay at home. That dive, gave MY102 a huge advance, and yet too...sounded the same as they did years before. I call it The Crow of a...Plastic Rooster! If MAGIC, MY, B-93, and The Planet were all Programmed correctly WROQ would have stayed flat. It's not just logic, it's the simple truth.

I don't think it is a hoax. USC will probably be a big draw to get people to sample the station and the demographics match up well (way better than gospel with football or a format like CHR, Urban, etc). Rock 101 being #2 25-54 actually makes the case even more to try to compete with them, it could help dial 101 down a little bit to keep 92.5 and 100.5 ahead of it. I do think that a "next generation of classic rock" format that emphasizes the 80s more than the 70s (like the stations I mentioned earlier) might help them chip away at Rock 101 better.

In response to what you said, Scooter, I like all of these changes over the last year or so. CC and Cox are really going at Entercom now. Then we have Salem trying talk soon and likely taking one of Word's top hosts. Entercom's stations' programming has been too stagnant for too long. I'm hesitant that they'll try to improve them. The changes in this market in the past 18 months, though, are astonishing.

This is kind of full circle for the 96.7 frequency in Greenville, as it played classic rock during the day (or at night?) towards the end. The Buzzard lasted 5 and a half years. Shine will go down as one of the biggest jokes ever tried around here. Female talk and The Walk are above it. I just can't believe Shine went on for 5 years. I'm well aware that the general audience isn't paying attention or caring when it's launched, I'm just curious myself. I'd say it'll be on the air soon, though. The name is rather odd. Road...Road Warriors? ???

It came on this morning.
There's a recently played feature here:

http://www.967theroad.com/iplaylist/playlist.html?last10=1

Typical mainstream classic rock.  Sounds better than WROQ.

I'm not much of a classic rock fan, but I listened to it for a bit this morning and, yes, it definately sounds better than Rock 101. Better mix and variety.

It's kind of sad that two big stations (WROQ and WTPT) did nothing for years and now two smaller stations are doing things better, IMO, than they are. So now we've got four rock stations (five if you count Chuck) and it's the established ones that are going to have to do some catch up if they want to not lose some of their ratings. I know the translators and 96.7 won't likely ever surpass them in ratings based merely on their wattage, but The Planet and Rock 101 should be concerned about a drop in ratings.

Oh, and I agree that The Road is kind of a strange name. I could actually see that as being the name for a Christian / Positive Hits station....but not Classic Rock.
