Likelihood of The View cancellation?

More ‘View’ Trouble: ‘The Talk’ Wins Viewership Battle For First Time

ABC must be thanking the TV gods that Barbara Walters was back on The View today. After a very rough ride and rumors galore since the matriarch last year left the show she helped create back in 1997, the daytime talker needs the help after taking another hit. For the first time ever, rival The Talk beat The View in total viewers. In ratings for the week ending on January 11, the just over 4-year old Sara Gilbert created and co-hosted CBS show had an average of 2.95 million viewers. That’s a small but psychologically significant 2% jump over the 2.88 million The View pulled over the same period.

Since ABC has,
for Talk "The View"
for cooking "The Chew"
They should come up with
For Health "The Spew"
For a zany show "The Zoo"
For intelligent talk "The Few"
For handling money ...

Uncertain outlook for ABC’s ‘The View’

When Rosie O’Donnell began her latest stint as co-host of “The View” last fall, things did indeed seem rosy for the ABC talk show.

There was a huge amount of buzz over the popular O’Donnell’s return, seven years after her last run ended, and ratings for the season premiere hit their highest level in eight years.

But now, five months later, the show is struggling, and its long-term future is suddenly cloudy.

On Friday O’Donnell announced she was leaving the show, blaming her abrupt departure on her health. She suffered a heart attack three years ago, and she is separating from her wife, which she said has led to dangerous levels of stress on her heart.

The exit comes after weeks of rumors that co-host Rosie Perez, who also joined in August, would be booted.

“’The View’ is struggling, and big changes will need to be made,” one buyer says. “But it’s still a valuable franchise for ABC.”

I think it is time for The View to go bye-bye. Maybe in the interim they can run reruns of some of their prime-time programming in the 11AM-Noon Eastern time-slot.

Meanwhile on today's Wendy Williams Show she suggested one more revamp. She suggested keeping Whoopi and then begging Joy Behr, Star Jones, and Barbara Walters to come back.

I don't know if it would work to bring back the old hosts. The only old host that should come back is Ms. Walters.

Jenny McCarthy Predicts ‘The View’ Has One More Year ‘Then I Think the Titanic Might Go Down’

Jenny McCarthy, who co-hosted “The View” from September 2013 to August 2014, thinks the daytime talk show may only last another year.

In an appearance on “The Howard Stern Show” with husband Donnie Wahlberg, Stern asked McCarthy if she would ever consider returning to the show. McCarthy laughed and said, “I think they might try one more year and then I think the Titanic might go down.”

McCarthy also said that a producer of the show tried to get her to come back after the ratings started to drop. “One of the producers called and said would I ever consider it, and I said, ‘No, thank you.'”

ABC is banking on Tyra Banks for next season with just a syndicated distributed from ABC, but that just affects one hour, but maybe it could be a 11am replacement.

Tyra' syndicated show failed, so why give her another shot. Just look at Queen Latifah. She also had a failed show, was given another, and failed again.

By the same token, many new hosts fail, so why take a chance on a new host?

Heck, there was that guy who failed spectacularly on daytime TV on NBC. What ever happened to him?

It wasn't that many years ago we had game show hosts, ahem, cycle through shows. They weren't shoved aside automatically because a given show failed. They're taking Tyra, for example, who does have a proven following, and trying to place her in a different structure, more of an ensemble format.

If The View gets cancelled, Tampa Bay would have a mix up for it's 11:00 slot. Live is already in WTVT (Happy Birthday!), Rachel is in WFLA, and the Dr's are in WTTA. Dr. Oz is ALREADY in WFTS, and we don't need another Tampa Bay Mix-Up, like in 1994 and 2012-2014. Rachel would go to 13, The Dr's will go to WTOG 44, Millionaire will move to 38 (making it the home of game shows in Tampa Bay), Live would go to 28, and WFLA Channel 8 will once again have it's own newscast at 11AM

'The View' From Here: ABC Show Has Fallen Off The Pop-Culture Radar

Whether you agreed or not with liberals Rosie O'Donnell and Joy Behar or rightie Elisabeth Hasselbeck, you knew where you stood with them. And you could rely on them for headline-making fireworks. When heated arguments did break out between these "View" co-hosts, you got the impression the dustups were real and the opinions expressed came from the heart. These days, however, no such drama appears to be emanating from "The View" -- at least not on-screen. Some are saying the malaise at "The View" is due to a more crowded field of competing, all-female talk shows on TV nowadays.

The last time I was in that restaurant I had my choice of country music videos and "The Price Is Right". I didn't say anything because evaluating this show isn't high on my list of priorities. But Rosie Perez leaving sounds like it would be an improvement.

The syndicated arm of ABC is launching The F.A.B. (Fun And Beautiful). On WABC and WPVI, will it likely air at 2pm, 3pm or 10am this Fall?

2pm puts it right against The Talk, and it's least disruptive as a change to the current schedule.
3pm means General Hospital moves back to 2pm, but 3pm is a stronger slot.
10am means Rachael Ray gets bumped and moves to the afternoon. 10am might also be a stronger slot than 2pm, following the successful 'Live with Kelly and Michael'

Also, what happens to 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire' clearances on those ABC O&O stations? Do WABC and WVPI cut back their noon newscasts to fit this back in?

In either event, I think ABC has less stock in keeping The View. I heard or read somewhere that Whoopi's contract lasts one more year. But if The View doesn't perform, I could see ABC axing it even by December, and the Jeopardy rerun/Millionaire combo is always an option.

However, ABC likely wouldn't want to give back the network hour back to affiliates. And there was some interest of ABC restarting GMA up back at 10am. ABC also did explore a 'Good Afternoon America' in the summer a few years ago for a couple months. That might be possible again. Does ABC offer it to the indy/MyNetwork/CW stations?

Like how Michael Strahan is versatile to be a GMA contributor and on a ABC syndicated show, maybe Raven-Symone would be up for GMA duties if GMA is expanded or it's Good Afternoon America , but she's paired with a guy, as she seems like the most interesting of anything to be kept from The View at this point.

Absolutely not. That's like giving up millions of dollars. No company can afford to do that. They'd rather continue with a weak show that makes SOME money than make none.

Networks have given back time in the past. Remember 'Port Charles'. It was cancelled for Millionaire. So not sure it's absolute.

In either event, ABC would get money by clearances of the syndicated shows that it produces, The FAB and potential other new shows for next season.

If it expands GMA a year later to bring back the network hour, I think many stations would still carry the third hour.

Given the host changes by the season, I do wonder if any stations will pre-empt The View. If a strong ABC affiliate has 'Live with Kelly & Michael', 'Ellen', 'Steve Harvey' and 'Dr. Oz' syndicated rights, why keep room for The View.

e.g. WBAL still pre-empts the 4th hour of Today in favor of 'Live with Kelly & Michael'

Not really the way companies tend to work. Syndication and network daytime are competing parts of the same company. While the money ultimately goes in to the same big pocket, the bonuses for the division presidents are at stake. No one's going to cede territory so that some other guy becomes more powerful. Also, if they give the time back to local, there's no guarantee they'll pick up the ABC syndication, or that syndication can't cut a better deal at another station.

I know in Los Angeles, KABC will be replacing 'Millionaire' and 'Daytime Jeporday' with 'The F.A.B.' 'Millionaire' is already airing on Independent KDOC, which will most likely its last LA home.

Port Charles wasn't cancelled for Millionaire. Some stations used the opening for Millionaire, but it was cancelled because it couldn't make the grade, so to speak. As to Millionaire's future on WABC and WPVI, there is a less than zero chance of the newscasts getting trimmed back. If Millionaire remains at all on the stations, look for it to be a late-night clearance only. And look for this to be the final season of a nice long run for Millionaire in daytime.
