line-up changes at the ticket?

RADIO TRUTH said:
How about a guy like Scott Ferrall from Sirius Satellite Radio and SNY in New York who actually knows something about sports, can effectively communicate and would be a big improvement over any of the local, Dallas putz collection.

Okay, yeah, that sounds like a wonderful idea.

And while they're at it, why don't they also re-hire such bastions of sports talk radio greatness like The Sports Princess, Max Miller, Rocco Pendola, and Timm Matthews while possibly mixing in other sports radio legends like Stephen A. Smith from ESPN, J.T. The Brick, Andrew Siciliano and John Fricke from Fox Sports? Then they'd really be a great station.

The more I read, the more I'm convinced the announcement pertains to Ticketstock. Perhaps the guest is Nolan Ryan? Too, the variations of the line-up changes that I've seen thus far seem rather far-fetched, as the station seems to be doing extremely well (Greggo-less or not).

Haha.. I remember when he used to be overnights on the ticket on the national broadcast. That is the most unstable guy ever. First of all he has been fired like 25 times because he is a drunk. Secondly he has a stupid voice bit.. Third, he is not that knowledgeable on sports.

But yeah besides those things he would be great.

Hmm.. come ot think of it.. he would be a perfect replacement for Greggo.

I'd be shocked if this major announcement pertained to something other than Ticketstock. And it hasn't been officially announced on the station, but the city of Plano website lists Nolan Ryan as making an appearance.

Knowing our luck, it'll be grandpa urine taking over The Hardline slot. ;)

Naw, this has to do with the 'stock, prolly

I will respond in time to the various stuff written above. I want to respond to one thing now. If I am programming any type of radio talk station, I would have a maximum of one person on-the-air per shift. If the one person is good enough, you don't need any more than one person in a four hour shift. This is also true for morning drive on music stations. Quantity does not equate to quality. As far as Scott Ferrall goes, I don't think that anyone at Sirius makes that much money judging by some of the dj salaries, with the exception of Howard Stern. I doubt that Ferrall would ever go downward in market size to come to Dallas. It is not that I think that Ferrall is so great but, versus the ticket, at least he keeps on topic and only talks about sports. I also like the fact that he speaks his mind and is not afraid of making waves. If the ticket stayed on topic, sounded less red neck and didn't kiss the ass of Jerry Jones, I might cut them some slack.

Yep, whatthe ticket needs to do is stay on topic, sound more new york(or at least less red neck) and stop talking so much Cowboys.

The only problem with that is that they have been HUGELY succesful by not staying on topic, being rednecks, and being in bed with (in the kinkiest of threesomes) with both Jerry and Fake Jerry...

I love reading all this talk, from people who have no apparent radio success on their resume (cough RT cough cough) about how fooked up the Ticket is. Unless I'm sorely mistaken, (and I really don't think I am) KTCK has been in the hunt for #1 (and never lower than like 8 or 10) for Adults 25-54 for YEARS. Not a couple trends, not a few books, YEARS.

And as SalemJedi mentioned earlier, that dominance there translates into 20million plus A YEAR. I've also heard rumor that they are one of the highest billers of the past year in the market.

So yeah, let's take a station that's dominant in ratings, that's dominant in the IMPORTANT measuring stick (money) and stick some failure like ferrall on it...

And here's another random thought. A lot of teh complaints about KTCK is that they don't stay on topic or "they don't talk enough real sports", or "they spend too much time talking chicks/cars/movies/etc"...

And while it's hard to argue against that point, isnt that purely a matter of taste/opinion? And as such, don't you have to bow to the numbers? If the listeners think they're not staying on topic enough, they'll punch out, don't ya think?

But if the listeners don't mind a little scattershooting, they'll stick around, right? Last time I looked, the HArdline and Russ Martin combined were DOMINATING afternoon drive. They were 1 and 2, with 3rd place so far back that it's embarassing.

So what our our options? If you're Radiotruth, the listeners are too stupid to know what 'good' sportstalk radio is. And just haven't been exposed to anything else...(even though ESPN has been around for half a dozen years, Fox Sports has tried (and failed) here, not to mention the scintillating radio that was the Tom Bailey Experience...)

Or just maybe, the listeners want to be entertained, and they find the Ticket entertaining. And it doesn't matter if they're talking sports or not, as long as they're entertained. Maybe the real "radio truth" is that listeners want to be entertained. Some are entertained by rock music, some by oldies, some by rap & R&B, some by the best mix of the 80's 90's and today, some by conservative talk, some by conservative talk with a local angle, and yes, some by sports. And while some are entertained by sports talk, don't the ratings prove that there's room for them to do more than 'just' sports talk?

(and just as a side note, I love the comprisons to WFAN as a 'real' sports station that stays on topic. WFAN has a signal that goes to hell and back, a metro area population bigger than most countrys, and enough sports teams to choke an elephant. Correct me If I'm wrong, but WFAN can talk "local sports" and do 2 NFL teams (Jets and Giants) 2 MLB teams (Yankees and Mets) 3 hockey teams (Islanders, Rangers and Devils) and 2 NBA teams (Knicks, Nets) not to mention WNBA, MLS, Double and triple A baseball, and so on and so forth...That explains why they can stay on topic, they ALWAYS have at least a couple of teams playing)

And I'll leave one final note and then sign off for a while. What does it say about our industry when the premier sports radio station, in the biggest market in the country, a station that was a few years back the single biggest biller in the nation, can't find talent 'good enough' to do a show by themselves?

Otherwise, why did WFAN team up "Mike and the Mad Dog'? If a person is good enough, they don't need anybody else, right? So why can't the sports talk field generate enough "talent" that is capable of being "good enough" to do a show by themselves?

I don't hang out a lot on the other boards. Can someone wander over to the New York board and tell Mike and the Mad Dog that "apparently they suck". (Where have I heard that before?)

(And I'll avoid mentioning the whole 4 hour shift thing. Dan Patrick, 3 hour shift, you suck. Mike and Mike, you might go 4 hours (Do they, I'mnot awake that early), but 2 man show, you suck. Just about everybody on Sporting News, oh that's right, 3 hour shifts, you suck too.
REAL talent does 4 hour shifts by themselves. Wer know because we've been told the "radio truth"!!!)

Heard Norm's promo for "the big announcemnet" says that big guest will be joining him for it. HMMMMM new host possibly?

To which I still issue, why this time? Higher AQH and CUME during morning drive and afternoon drive. Norm? Unless he is leaving, makes no sense to offer a Ticketstock show update here.

Unless of course Nolan Ryan doesn't want to talk to anyone else up there?! Hmmmm

that could be.

Or, as mentioned earlier, 11am is when "Mike' starts his new show on ESPN. Think KTCK is capable of being devious enough to counter program that, and use their MUCH bigger cume to have people tuned into THEM at 11am instead of the debut of the playmaker?

(And one other thing- Switzer, Aikman, Irvin and others all ripped the Ticket, then changed their tune when offered a show (i.e. a check) on KTCK. Odds are that if they told Nolan Ryan his check was dependent on him talking to rhyner, the first words out of his mouth would be "Hi Mike, how you doing?)

I am leaning that it is a Ticketstock announcement....but they keep stressing that it is "Very Major"......Would Nolan Ryan constitute "major station announcement"? Even boldly highlighted on thier website. I guess we'll find out.

But to have a little fun, I'm predicting that the top 10 is gone and Norm is moving to evenings......

I'll get on board the Nolan Ryan "express".

This is Ticketstock, pure and simple. Mixed in with a little marekting and counterprogramming genius.

They'e got a bunch of people sucked in, thinking this is going to be a major shake-up...The dude(s) who right those promos are going to be laughing tomorrow when everybody finds out it's what the Plano Center is already advertising...

Does anybody know why Greggo's name and picture are still on the Hardline link to their page off theticket.com?

Can they just not use his name or drops involving him on-air anymore?

It IS the announcement of the headliner for Ticketstock. Just like the leadership of The Ticket to be so paranoid about Michael Irvin coming on board at ESPN to try and offset his beginning. I think it will make the listener mad after all the promo and then the letdown. The Ticket tried to get Michael, that is fact.

I swear if all this build up is about Nolan Ryan and Ticketstock I'm turning to ESPN out of spite.

It was about Nolan and ticketstock. If you stuck around, you would've heard that the hardline is going to talk about Gregg Williams at 5:15p today. Norm used Gregg's name specifically.

Stay tuned.
