So what you may see is a smaller AM- something like 1550 or 540 or whatever- taking on the ESPN programming. Local shows could possibly be bartered, but ESPN has restrictions as to how much and when.

Sports sounds better on AM and the 1020 signal reaches pretty far around Pittsburgh. FM talk is taking off now around the country because of the clarity and the signal reach in many cities. Pittsburgers can get the signal if they moved away from the metro area about the local sports in Pittsburgh. KDKA should then try to get back the Pirates when the existing contract expires in 2011 and I would not be surprised if they do. CBS has been trying to get back the sports team after Joel Hollander (CBS) dump them on his radio stations around the country who have no where to go but up from here. This way KDKA talk on FM can compete with 104.7. Sports on AM radio has a good track record it works.

The neighbors may just make them an offer. If I shelled out $400K for a McMansion I'd be a bit nervous about
looking eyeball to eyeball at a 5kW stick out my back window, day after day, for 20 or 30 years.

(in a similar neighborhood in Columbus voters in the school district shot down an offer
by Verizon to lease space on the school's football light standards for a cellular array.
The reason was they were afraid of exposing their kids to the RF...and we're talking
10 watts off the top of a 100 foot light tower!)

If 1250 talent aren't tied down with non-com's, this could fix some of the Fan's problems. Move Stan and Guy's show over. Add Bouchette's reports. Pair cook and starkey in the afternoon. Jettison Alexander (that's not tied to 1250, it's just a good idea).

Really can't see a lot of logic in taking a station that has a small audience on FM and putting it on AM, especially when news is the last thing KDKA does well.
The Pirates don't want an AM flagship.
