Local sports talk finished on 1250

1250 is running ESPN national programming through the end of December, so that's why it was included on the crawl.

I think for Pittsburgh Sport Fans from someone who visited the city for 30 years but no more CBS radio should swap KDKA AM with KDKA FM.
Sports sounds better on AM and the 1020 signal reaches pretty far around Pittsburgh. FM talk is taking off now around the country because of the clarity and the signal reach in many cities. Pittsburgers can get the signal if they moved away from the metro area about the local sports in Pittsburgh. KDKA should then try to get back the Pirates when the existing contract expires in 2011 and I would not be surprised if they do. CBS has been trying to get back the sports team after Joel Hollander (CBS) dump them on his radio stations around the country who have no where to go but up from here. This way KDKA talk on FM can compete with 104.7. Sports on AM radio has a good track record it works.

when the people at the "mouse" make the switch to all kids all the time will Pittsburgh be the only NFL city without an ESPN radio affiliate? I would think the ESPN radio people would want a station in a strong NFL market like Pittsburgh.

In lots of markets the FOX affiliate is regarded as the stronger sports station than the ESPN one is. Knoxville and Columbia, SC come to mind, for instance.

I've heard that ESPN is really in touch with having as much of their syndicated programming on the air as they can. So what you may see is a smaller AM- something like 1550 or 540 or whatever- taking on the ESPN programming. Local shows could possibly be bartered, but ESPN has restrictions as to how much and when.

I know in Knoxville, the ESPN affiliate had serious restrictions as to how much local programing they could have. They had something like one show from a veteran sports talker there- and if my memory serves it wasn't that lengthy of a show (1-2 hours maybe?) and the rest was syndicated.

The way they got around that was the station owner put ESPN Deportes on another one of his small AMs. Believe it or not, this satisfied ESPN's requirements for their national programming to be heard and then allowed the owner to barter time on his english speaking ESPN station.

And no, Knoxville does not have a large spanish speaking population that I am aware of.

Phoenix's ESPN affiliate, Bonneville's KTAR 620, is mostly local during the important day-parts. 5-9 AM & Noon to 8 PM weekdays, plus 7 AM to noon Saturdays for local sports-talk. They also carry almost all the major local teams - D'backs, Suns, Arizona State football and men's hoops, and the Cardinals if there's no conflict with the D'backs or Suns. That's not a lot of time for ESPN filler (just Cowherd, overnights, and weekends) - and that's exactly what any major-market sports station should call it.

IIRC, even the ESPN O&Os in NY, Chicago, and LA carry quite a bit of local programming. But they do run ESPN's network ads during local shows, as does KTAR.

Really can't see a lot of logic in taking a station that has a small audience on FM and putting it on AM, especially when news is the last thing KDKA does well.

The Pirates don't want an AM flagship.

Remember, Radio Disney is only going on 1250 because Disney is throwing in the towel on it - and the timing is dictated by the end of the LMA of 540.

I'd be shocked if Birach weren't brokering time on 540, or LMAing it full-time to someone else, after 12/31. They'll probably make a run at some of the shows on 620/770/etc., if they can't do a full-time LMA deal with someone.

The 540 property by Southpointe is worth far more than the station itself. Shut it down and sell the real estate!

based on the 20 minutes of dead air that occurred in the middle of Mike and Mike this morning,
I'd say that the Mouse is already in the House

The neighbors may just make them an offer. If I shelled out $400K for a McMansion I'd be a bit nervous about
looking eyeball to eyeball at a 5kW stick out my back window, day after day, for 20 or 30 years.

If anyone shelled out $400k for a Garage Mahal that already had a 5kW radio tower visible in the backyard, I'd say they deserved the view they got. Anyone who doesn't want to see a radio tower out their back window shouldn't buy a house next to one.

I don't think it's the spoiled view but fear of the constant RF exposure that would drive it.
(in a similar neighborhood in Columbus voters in the school district shot down an offer
by Verizon to lease space on the school's football light standards for a cellular array.
The reason was they were afraid of exposing their kids to the RF...and we're talking
10 watts off the top of a 100 foot light tower!)

Spoiled view, fear of RF, or worries that towers attract UFO's, the point is the tower was there long before the houses. It's one thing if someone builds a tower after you buy the house. But if the tower is there first, and you buy the house anyway, then you have no room to kvetch about the tower being there.

You should see some of the stuff that happens with houses near tower sites in Florida. People practically have guy wires in their back yards.

A couple of small AMs down around Sarasota have totally lost their sites to development.

It's surprising to me that this would happen during Steeler season, but maybe they sold what they thought they could sell for the Steeler shows and are cutting their losses.

If 1250 talent aren't tied down with non-com's, this could fix some of the Fan's problems. Move Stan and Guy's show over. Add Bouchette's reports. Pair cook and starkey in the afternoon. Jettison Alexander (that's not tied to 1250, it's just a good idea).

I assume it didnt make biz sense - however, i cant listen to the national talking heads too long. Ill miss Paulsen's show and Stan and Guy -- the radio biz sucks!

Could we see 93.7 The Fan try to get the contract for the Pirates? As they would still be on FM just 93.7 instead of 104.7 also I am sure CBS Radio will be in contract talks. Just recently CBS Radio won the contract back to the St. Louis Cards on KMOX.

Apparently there's still some bad blood between CBS and the Pirates from the team's departure from KDKA (also owned by CBS).

CBS had a beef with a since-departed Pirates official who badmouthed KDKA on the way out the door. I don't think that would be an impediment to doing business again. CBS could use the Pirates for The Fan, and the Pirates don't want to continue on a CC station that has no sports programming.
