Loud Media aquires WGAP/WKVL

I wonder too on the 93.7 signal. 105.1’s reach is so awful it’s hardly worth mentioning. Is 93.7 at a different location or better height? If so, maybe they’ll use it for something instead of the Mid Century format. I could see them relaunching Jump if it’s a better signal too.
Idk, overall Loud seems like an odd company to me. Almost seems like someone with money just having fun & “playing radio”. None of these rimshots & translators are going to be big players. And also they seem to change everything up every few months on a whim. Plus they spend money on new imaging/sweepers/jingles each time too. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad to have them in the market for the variety, and their stations do sound well produced. I just don’t see any financial value really other than having fun.
It's funny you bring up 93.7 and Jump. It mainly covers East Knox and Downtown according to the maps. It's extremely directional due to 93.5 WKZX and a small 10 watt translator very close on 93.9 in Sevier County near Kodak. It would definitely work for that format. I think it would pair nice (signal wise) with 104.9. Hot has always done good in Blount County (i'd assume), so why not see what a full market Classic Hip-Hop could bring. It's Loud Media, so you never know. I'll place my bets before 5am hits. I say Jump 104.9/93.7 or 104.9 KVL as Hot AC and 93.7 seperate as Jump 93.7. I have no bets on 92.5. Feel free to bash me if i'm wrong lol. I just like playing the guessing game. Needless to say, this will be interesting and I hope it's something different we don't yet have.

WKCE seems to be the cockroach that never dies so it will probably survive the move. I looked for possible 92.5 and 93.7 domains registered on the same day as the other two. I didn’t see any possibilities.

I’ve also been trying to think of what WSMM could be. Simon? Sam-FM? Both of those were Adult Hits formats in other markets. The last station to have those call letters was in Indiana. It was known as “The Stream” with a Classic Hits format.

Long shot idea: They go Classic Country and brand as “92.5 WSM”. Well, maybe not, but years ago there was a station where I used to live that was officially WLSS, but branded as “WLS” to appeal to former Chicago area residents. It didn’t work out too well though.
I might take WKCE and make it a more straight-ahead 60s as opposed to the collector and geek format they're doing now. I know, I know. It must be someone's hobby.

You’re so right. It’s fun to watch and listen to these changes as the radio nerds that we are. But in the real world, I can’t imagine that this is the most lucrative way to run things. But it’s their money and they aren’t bankrupt yet (that we know of).

Regarding your 105.1 comment, I thought the Bluff Mountain signal was great for a translator. I could hear it all over Knoxville, at least in the car. As for Jump making an appearance on 93.7, the thing that makes my skeptical about that is the existence of Lit 97.1. Apparently they still own it, but lease it out. I would imagine the LMA likely has some type of format non-compete clause. But as JSikes925 said, it’s Loud Media, so you never know.

I’d mentioned the 90s/2000’s format as a possibility & I was wondering if that might be the route they were going. It’s kinda been one of the flavor of the moment formats popping up the past couple of years (Hot 93,3 Dallas, WSHE Chicago, etc). It’s also the next evolution of classic hits as the demos age. It’s a nice fit in the market too between Star & B. It’ll compete somewhat with B’s audience, but this format will venture further into the rhythmic & rock hits that AC formats like B won’t touch. I’m pleased.

So they have made the signal change at 104.9? I’ve noticed the signal is worse today at home. I get a static-filled signal on my home stereo and can barely get it at all on my portables. My clock radio picks it up just fine though. Previously I had no trouble with the old signal on any of those radios. I haven’t driven around yet to check it out in the car though.

As for the format, I’ll give them credit for trying something unique in the area. I don’t like ‘90s pop, but do like ‘00s. In fact I’d rather have ‘00s and ‘10s. But anyway, it seems like a decent choice and I’ll probably listen occasionally. I’m not really mourning the loss of Lake FM as I didn’t care for their approach to the format. I can’t receive Fun 105.9 so I have no idea what that sounds like.

It sounds great in Maryville. What area are you in out of curiosity?

I drove into work from Loudon County through west Knox, & I thought the signal seemed stronger now in west Knox (at least along the interstate). It seems decent here where I work in the Middlebrook/Papermill/Weisgarber area.

Fun 105.9 is better here too than the previous Random Radio format. So I’m guessing 105.9 translator was moved/improved too. 105.9 fades quickly deeper into west Knox co/Farragut though.

I didn’t happen to check & see if the adjacent 104.7 translator was still on in Loudon (WLOD). It was still on yesterday though. I suspect Loud will want them to move that asap.

105.1 is still on. I also gotta wonder if 104.9 has some more signal balancing to do. They never had a testing phase.

100.9 was dead air. It just came back on at noon. You wouldn't believe it. Random Music Radio...
I actually kinda enjoyed their Random Music Radio, adult hits format. I found the mix more diverse & interesting than most of the typical Jack/Bob type adult hits formats. I’m guessing it’s a placeholder for now though. I would think it would be too close to their formats on Fun & KVL to stay. But who knows with Loud? I know 100.9 is moving to serve the Sevierville area, but Bristol Broadcasting is already doing adult hits in the Sevier area with their translator “Watson 104.1”.

Seems to me Bristol bought the then-silent WSEV (930) and the translator and promptly forgot about them. Sevier County has Mixx 105-5 as a local station that seems to do well, but all the other listening is Knoxville. Mixxx even has another FM that has recently spun the format wheel to Spanish. I question the idea of another Sevier County move-in

I finally got some driving time today and got to check reception around some West Knoxville spots. 105.9 is completely unlistenable in the Karns area. It’s ok around Cedar Bluff, with just occasional drop out spots. It was equal to 100.9 in that area. 104.9 was slightly better, but not perfect. It stops on scan, but it’s noticeable how the audio is just dull compared to neighboring bigger signals (like 104.5). But that may have more to do with signal strength rather than processing.

Format wise, I like the Fun 105.9 jingles. Musically it sounds just like Lake FM without the ‘90s. Other than the imaging, I didn’t really hear anything intriguing enough on the playlist to make me want to listen longer. 104.9 KVL has some nice jingles too. Musically, I’d hear a great song followed by two bad ones. I’ll keep a preset for it, but I probably wouldn’t listen continuously for any great length of time.

I like that 104.9 seems to be adding more variety to the playlist. Seemed overly 2000s rhythmic dominated on launch day. But the last couple of days, I’m hearing a lot more rock mixed in, as well as more early 90s rhythmic & pop/dance too. I kinda wonder if they didn’t start off with a lot of Jumps playlist already in their computer drives & are slowly adding more product in daily. I’m enjoying the mix now though, for sure. It’s always fun to have a station focusing on songs that have been in those forgotten years & not heard on radio in awhile. I think that’s what the 90s/2k format has going for it (at least for a bit). My only gripe would be, I think the scheduling & rotation could be tweaked a bit. Currently sometimes you hear 20 min of hip hop before a rock or pop song, & then sometimes a couple of rock songs in a row. I’d prefer a more even mix (but it could be scheduled this way in blocks on purpose).

As far as the signal goes. Overall I think it’s better in west Knox than before, but obviously not great. It’s certainly stronger twrds my house in Loudon Co now. Although the 104.7 translator is still on in Loudon & bleeds over when your close to their tower. Hope it’s moved soon. I did notice when going down to visit family in Sweetwater the other day that the signal sounded great down that way. So yeah, they kinda traded a lot of rural area north of town for a lot of rural area south of town. But I’d say it’s a good trade. Being stronger in west Knox vs North Knox is a good trade. And there’s also bigger communities & more money to be made in Blount, Loudon, & Sevier Counties where they’re strong now vs the previous Campbell, Scott, Union outlying areas they were covering before.

This is an issue on Fun 105.9 as well. When I flipped it on yesterday, I heard an early ‘70s song, followed by a ‘60s song, followed by another early ‘70s song.
