Lujack to Hit Parade Radio

WCFL beat WLS from late 1972 through 1973. CFL's speeding up of the records happened in 1974.

I agree with the poster who said Lujack sounded best during his four years on Super CFL. But it wasn't during the "years" that Rook was there. Rook was at WCFL only for a few months.

I thought CFL only beat LS for one rating book & I think it was during a big contest that CFL was promoting.

People who were there told me that WCFL had been creeping up on WLS through 1972 beating them in several time periods. By the last ratings of the year they out-rated them in every time slot and that continued into 1973 when Super CFL was named Billboard Radio Station Of The Year.

I lived in Chicago at the time and according to everything I ever read on the subject WLS did lose ground in 72, but WCFL only won in one ratings book in 73 during the "Last Contest".
After that WLS got back into the lead right away and never looked back. WCFL was out of business in less than 3 years after that as a Rock station.

I'd rather believe the people who were working there than anyone viewing and writing from outside. One of my sources was in the sales department. He had to sell those numbers good or bad and he remembers Super CFL beating LS across the board in late 1972 and the first couple of ratings periods of 1973. He says it wasn't until late 1973 that CFL started to lose it and WLS regained the upper hand. He also said The Last Contest helped but was only part of the reason for WCFL's success. One of their jockeys told me pretty much the same thing but I'd put more stock in what the sales guy said since he had to use those ratings every day to sell advertising.

Well that's not what many others remember, but in any event it's all history now.

I'll take the word of those who were working there at that time. The history should not be re-written and perpetuated by any one of us who only heard or read things. You can't believe everything you read and that includes what you read from the great Clark Weber who has since admitted getting it wrong about the WCFL ratings in his recent book.

my memory is a little foggy due to too many years of fun..but i thought the last contest was a KCBQ promotion..or am i mistaken ??? or was there more than on last contest ? but then one would have to have been..the "next to the last contest".. ::)

Regarding Clark Weber's book, there are so many innacuracies in that book it's incredible. The dates & the so called facts as he remembered them were way off in many cases. It would have been nice if he had hired a fact checker before he published that book.

I'd rather believe Arbitron. WCFL was ahead of WLS in listener ratings only for the Summer 1973 book.

His memory may be playing tricks on him. During 1972 and early 1973, 'CFL may have been ahead of 'LS in "this demo" (primarily 18-24) one book or "that daypart" in another book. But it was only during the peak "phase two" of the so-called Last Contest in the summer of 1973 that WCFL had the overall victory in listener ratings. More significantly, 'CFL was never ahead of 'LS -- even in 1973 -- in monthly sales revenue.

That's the way I remember it.

I also side with AArbitron. Clark Weber had a HUGE ego - and would send out postcards w/his pix omn 1 side and a note w/a magic marker on the other that said, "WLS ahead of cfl 3 to one." I know. I used to write him often. I have 3 such cards.

Clark also had a bad memory. All you have to do is read his book to discover that.

I believe it is to debut sometime in September of this year. I don't know any specifics of station affiliation as of yet, though.

I'm with you. Living in NW Indiana and growing up listening to Lujack, I hope the network gets a major Chicago signal.

The next question, is will 'Lil' Tommy Edwards be Lujack's sidekick. It wouldn't be the same without him and "Animal Stories".

Just found this tidbit of information on station affiliation.

We still don't know how or if we will be able to hear this in Chicago.
