magic 989 now jack fm and joy 106.3 now magic 106.3

Nu Roo 2...The lady that owned WROU-FM in Dayton was named Ronita Hawes-Saunders. The station launched in November 1991 with Shanice's "I Love Your Smile" as the first song. U-92 as it was known from '91-2003 was a straight-ahead Urban station. It did well until Radio One bought 102.9 and flipped it from Classic Rock 102.9 WING-FM to Rhythmic CHR as "HOT 102.9" on August 3, 2001. WROU-FM was sold in early 2003 due to Hawes-Saunders going bankrupt. The original studios in Downtown Dayton still in fact have the WROU call sign on it. Anyhow, once R-1 bought 'ROU, they immediately changed the format to Urban AC and flipped the calls to WRNB-FM. A few months later they ended up bringing back the familiar WROU calls.
Onto the possibility of a sale...This is VERY likely IMO. Ironically enough, Main Line's Adult Hits in Richmond, VA. is also at 98.9, entitled 98.9 Liberty. Too bad they didn't name the station CAPITOL 98.9 since Columbus is the state capitol, much like ML named Fly 92.9 in Dayton b/c of Dayton's history in aviation. If Main Line did indeed buy these signals, they will have almost identical formats in Columbus as they have in Dayton, minus Modern AC and Sports Talk. If ML comes in, I bet that they make Power a Rhythmic CHR once again and mirror HOT 102.9 in Dayton. Here in Dayton, ML launched Fly on November 2, 2007, and CLiCK on March 25, 2011 to screw with CC's Mix 107.7 and their formerly monster ratings. Of course, CC responded over the Summer by moving their CHR Channel 9-4-5 to the 50,000 watt 99.9, and moved AC 99.9 Lite FM to the weaker 94.5 signal, making Mix the dominant AC format in the building.
My guess is this is NOT the end of format changes. With the low ratings that WCGX has garnered recently, I wonder if CC will go ahead and blow it up and throw 'TVN on there? Also, where does this leave Saga and NABCO in the ratings race? NABCO isn't going to change 99.7, that we know. 103.9 could flip. As for Saga, Mix is struggling, most likely due to the weak signal at 107.9. They could always move Rewind to 107.9 and Mix to 103.5/104.3. Only time will tell... ???

I also tend towards the "sale-to-be-announced" theory, but would that leave anyone open to charges of unauthorized transfer of control? Or is a format change insufficient evidence?

No, Radio One made the format change, their GM announced it...it was "their" choice...nothing unauthorized about that.

It makes perfect sense to let R1 do that, as the incoming people can't be challenged/held responsible for the change, (even if they instigated it).

It's a fairly clean way of not having to deal with the angry AA community, who could suggest that their limited programming choices were eroded. Even if there was a FCC challenge to the transfer to another company, it would be hard to win, although the process would be delayed for several months. It's a done deal, short of finding out who is getting what...

Hard to make a guess, but..

Saga or Wilks, either could do reasonable well with the R1 Combo, keeping the 1075 format, potentially moving the old 989 somewhere else.

The Wilks thing might be interesting, if they owned both 107.1, and 107.5...

Nabco....dunno, see both positives and negatives, but they are the most local...

of course, Cumulus could come in, buy Wilks and R1, and halfway challenge CC.

isn't speculation wonderful!

i can't believe you guys a re going ape crap over a jock-less station...really? you have no idea what real radio is all about. go to pandora and set up you're jack fm station.

Thanks for recounting the history, Alan. Hard to believe Fly has been around for almost 4 years now! And I never would have thought R1's entry into Dayton was 10 years ago! Time flies.

See what you mean. Although I suppose the sooner any new owner appears, the more legally-toothless anger that could be directed their way, especially if it's someone who is already in town. But that would fade.

Hard to see Wilks as the buyer without musical adjustments to either Jack or cash-cow WLVQ. Right now classic rock seems to form the core of Jack's varied music mix.

Wonder if the small amount of rhythmic they were playing initially is already being weeded out?  No more MC Hammer or Lipps.  Seems like the closest is Prince, who of course has rock credentials...sort of.

EDIT: I *knew* that within minutes after I posted that they would play something rhythmic. Far from a personal favorite or an "oh wow," though: Stayin Alive.

I'm with you, wilson. I was going to call their excitement about 98.9 the minority opinion, but then I realized that the black minority in this town doesn't agree with it, so I guess it can't be.

It's been 41 different Supremes songs played so far on "Secrets", plus 28 from Jimi Hendrix, 23 from Sly and the Family Stone, and many as well from Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, the Crystals, the Temptations, Booker T and the MG's, the Drifters, the Platters, the Fifth Dimension, the Four Tops, James Brown, Darlene Love, the Impressions, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Edwin Starr, Sam Cooke, the Ronettes, Major Lance, and Marvin Gaye (both with and without Tammi Terrell) -- they've all been heard on my show. Radio began to lose its magic a long, long time ago, and now it has lost a lot of its Magic listeners as well. I invite them to check out what I'm doing on WCRS.

I still say if Clear Channel was smart they would consider flipping 105.7 and 106.7 to Urban AC and Gospel formats.. they could even use 'Premium choice" formats.. It would instantly win over those disgruntled Radio One listeners who are upset their gospel station is gone and their Urban AC has been sent to a static filled signal. 105.7s signal has about the same coverage as 98.9's Class A... 106.7 would be an "improvement" as Gospel signal wise to 106.3. Plus WNCI could "keep" hurting Power... Would be a big nightmare for R1.

magic 98.9 ratings in the last six books-5.9 5.1 5.3 4.9 5.7 6.4

Gen X radio 106.7's ratings last 6 books-2.1 2.3 2.4 2.3 2.5 1.6

Maybe they won't, but I don't see why they wouldn't switch 106.7 to Urban AC. If a station that consistently pulls in 5 shares suddenly changes formats, and I'm stuck with consistent 2 shares, I'm changing to urban ac and gettin' a 5 share. Seems logical to me.

Even with all other things being equal, 106.7 would never have as much potential as 98.9 because the signal isn't as good.

My guess is they won't, but you are right, if they did do an urban ac, it would do a lot to distroy R1 or any serious contender who might challenge them. They recently did an urban something or other in Lexington Ky, so it might not be a stretch here...would give them something to sell...

If the do it though, I see it as probably being more punitive, vs something they really want to do.

I love the Jack format thus far.I also enjoy Jack-FM,100.7 in San Diego. As for 103.9,they should ditch their current format and make it another AC(Citadels's Hits and Yesterdays Favorites).

105.7 would be the logical choice for a Urban AC... either way... even 106.7 would be a big improvement over the current 106.3 and I think would please a majority of the disgruntled listeners upset about the switch to 106.3...

105.7 actually has fairly decent ratings though. I think 106.7 would make the better choice because their ratings are so bad. They stand to gain at least two to three times the ratings they have now. Hell, even if 103.9 switched to Urban AC It'd be an improvement. 106.3's signal is the absolute worst. Why they would move a format that does so well in the ratings to the absolute worst signal in Columbus is beyond me.

106.3 is licensed and located in London, so the signal is obviously better on the east side, although it skips into Reynoldburg, and some of the northern areas. It, like just about every other fringe signal gets clobbered downtown by buildings, and the WBNS tower "noise", IMHO, attempts to clean up that mess should have been cleared up years ago...(flame suit on)!

Why does anyone move any format?...because someone has more interest in another format, which pretty much explains the whole, "they must have sold it" conversations. From the usual R1 business model, it's totally contrary, which indicates for some reason, they really don't care about the market anymore.

Or........ even with good numbers they were not making enough money selling advertising to pay the bills. my guess is that the bulk of the sales are combo sales for Power and Magic, aimed at a small part of the overall pie in Columbus. that said since they are still going to reach most of that group, and now they add a new station aimed at a much larger target audience they should be able to sell this single station at higher rates and make more money,

Radio is a business, and sad to say sometimes the smaller part of the audience suffers because bills need to be paid, staff wants pay checks etc.

You must mean it's better on the west side because it's absolutely horrible on the east side.

On a side note, I was checking out Magic's Facebook page and people are melting. They are really, really, really pissed off and I can't say I blame them. R1 really did an injustice to their listening audience.

Has anyone else noted Jack FM 98.9 is not directing it's displaced Magic 98.9 listeners over to 106.3. I have yet to hear one liner in regard to Magic moving over to 106.3. Magic also abruptly
moved over to 106.3 last Friday,

Not the normal industry wide protocol when a radio station moves to a different frequency.

Here is the 106.3 coverage map... Like tOMW says, this is for entertainment purposes only:

Tina Jones-Smithposted toMagic 98.9 Radio

Columbus has lost both its Magic and Joy in one day? I can only do 107.5 for about 1 hour then I am done. Radio One does know its listeners very well. It was bad enough that I could not get gospel inspiration during the day due to bad reception but now I can't get classic soul either.....bad move!
