Nu Roo 2...The lady that owned WROU-FM in Dayton was named Ronita Hawes-Saunders. The station launched in November 1991 with Shanice's "I Love Your Smile" as the first song. U-92 as it was known from '91-2003 was a straight-ahead Urban station. It did well until Radio One bought 102.9 and flipped it from Classic Rock 102.9 WING-FM to Rhythmic CHR as "HOT 102.9" on August 3, 2001. WROU-FM was sold in early 2003 due to Hawes-Saunders going bankrupt. The original studios in Downtown Dayton still in fact have the WROU call sign on it. Anyhow, once R-1 bought 'ROU, they immediately changed the format to Urban AC and flipped the calls to WRNB-FM. A few months later they ended up bringing back the familiar WROU calls.
Onto the possibility of a sale...This is VERY likely IMO. Ironically enough, Main Line's Adult Hits in Richmond, VA. is also at 98.9, entitled 98.9 Liberty. Too bad they didn't name the station CAPITOL 98.9 since Columbus is the state capitol, much like ML named Fly 92.9 in Dayton b/c of Dayton's history in aviation. If Main Line did indeed buy these signals, they will have almost identical formats in Columbus as they have in Dayton, minus Modern AC and Sports Talk. If ML comes in, I bet that they make Power a Rhythmic CHR once again and mirror HOT 102.9 in Dayton. Here in Dayton, ML launched Fly on November 2, 2007, and CLiCK on March 25, 2011 to screw with CC's Mix 107.7 and their formerly monster ratings. Of course, CC responded over the Summer by moving their CHR Channel 9-4-5 to the 50,000 watt 99.9, and moved AC 99.9 Lite FM to the weaker 94.5 signal, making Mix the dominant AC format in the building.
My guess is this is NOT the end of format changes. With the low ratings that WCGX has garnered recently, I wonder if CC will go ahead and blow it up and throw 'TVN on there? Also, where does this leave Saga and NABCO in the ratings race? NABCO isn't going to change 99.7, that we know. 103.9 could flip. As for Saga, Mix is struggling, most likely due to the weak signal at 107.9. They could always move Rewind to 107.9 and Mix to 103.5/104.3. Only time will tell... ???
