I know what the Journal reported....but I don't think it will be Spanish. What about Country? It makes sense to protect WQDR.
What about smooth jazz? Sure, a lot of it is garbage but there were songs I liked. I didn't tune in a great deal on weekends because it's such a pain to find out the name of an instrumental. You have to commit to listening until there is a vocal performance or something else recognizable.
And to identify which song you heard, you have to know what followed it. And if they listed more songs than they played between two recognizable songs, you were up the creek.w00t said:

Clear Channel did very well financially with Hispanic and Curtis Media has some experience with Hispanic in Raleigh and did equally as well financiall with that format. The Hispanic makes some real sense to me, much more than "country", and it could be a good move for Curtis financially. Norberto Sanchez has not set the world on fire with WIST since they are basically just rebroadcasting whatever they do in Charlotte. WNOW out of Gafney, SC is hurting lots of Hispanic stations in that area with a stronger signal and format. Hispanic done by a professional broadcaster in the market could be huge financially. If you recall Clear Channel pulled good numbers 18-34 with 94.5 when it was Hispanic. Time will tell but let's not forget Oldies! WTHZ was a top 5 station in the GSO market and Curtis had been playing around with Oldies in Raleigh with some success. Wow maybe "Spanish Oldies", now that ought to get some folks talking.

Of course, but WTQR has not had a competitor in a long time. Capitol tried against QDR with 99.9 before it was sports, and Clear Channel tried with 1061 before it was Talk.
So 2 out of 3 groups tried and failed. Who's going to try next? Radio One?

After two morning show disasters and now simulcasting a third show that's a borderline disaster Clear Channel has to be kicking themselves for switching 94.5 La Precosia to Rush Radio.....
Then again isn't Clear Channel kicking themselves standard protocol these days?
What I never understand is why Curtis Media bought this NCNN network and how they never fully utilize it. They should just dismantle it altogether and split up the staffers at NCNN to these different stations to beef up the news staff and make it truly local. Not having 2 guys in a room doing phone interviews, actually going out and covering events with the different NCNN people.
Combine that with local talk and it should be a better formula with what the have going. I do give Curtis some credit for the new WSJS lineup. I'd like to see how it works out but they at least are ATTEMPTING to have local hosts and local news.

The Spanish Oldies format would be a good direction and agree that 94.5 was close to that foramt in their hayday. WSJS is moving more to a news format and in many cities across the country the "Talk" stations are taking it on the chin from the "news" stations. Take a look at the numbers for Public Radio in Raleigh and in other markets. Time will tell but keep in mind that Don Curtis is not stupid, Phil on the other hand!
I'm most sorry for Allan Handelman. I've heard him on-air since the early '80s and I really admire his style. Unlike other contemporary talkers, like Mark Levin, Michael Savage, et al, Allan doesn't blow off people in an insulting manner. He's easy to listen to, and has the ability to disagree with someone without demeaning them. In my book he's a rare commodity today. For years Allan has had to deal with poorly-maintained equipment, technical glitches, etc., which he handled with class. ZTK apparently wasn't willing (or wasn't able) to give him the platform to properly let him do his thing. I can't even begin to count the number of times he had to deal with caller dropouts, crackling audio, technical glitches , etc. I wish him well. Well done, Allan!

i'm guessing a simulcast of WYMY. it makes the most sense with coverage. while they do overlap city-grade over raleigh, most of their coverage is seperate. it would give the La Ley format a strong city-grade presence from winston-salem to greenville, and even beyond that with a decent signal. and, there must be mega-bucks available in doing so.
Forgive me if this has been reported, but on my drive home this evening 101.1 was simulcasting The Pulse.
If they were going to simulcast anything, don't you think they would have already done it? Seems like Pulse 102 is just on to keep the transmitters warm.amos said:
