Please understand big radio companies do not care about what you care about rox. They care about quarterly profit. Not ratings, not listenership, not interaction. Corporate cares about profit for shareholders. That’s it.
if they did care about ratings, they would do something to improve them. Same with TV. They care about making money. That’s it. And I can’t say I blame them. I am one of them. But to me, local still matters very much. It matters to me personally. I don’t have shareholders.
I am not trying to sound pompous at all. I have learned a lot in 4 years of ownership. I will tell you that when one of these Buffalo companies are ready to unload , or at least break pieces off, I am in the position to buy them. Infact, I have literally been told by my bank to buy more stations. Not small ones, but full power FMs. However, I only want to do this in Buffalo.
I look at some of these 50000 watt fms just hanging there being a jukebox and literally want to cry. The very sad part is, they don’t want to sell. They want to drive them into the ground while holding their shareholders captive.
I literally have the gunpowder of tens of millions of dollars right now to invest in these stations. I have bent backwards and forwards talking to corporate.
They have no plans to sell, and they have no plans to improve. I feel they are waiting for another round of bankruptcy.
in the meantime, listenership continues to decline, technology continues to improve and while I am blessed to have a great metro station that is really doing well, I am ready to take the next step.
I am very prepared to hit the button for any one of these three Buffalo clusters. They know I am. I’m not shy about telling them, as nobody is getting younger.
the statistic you provided is something I already knew. listenership is down, younger and older demos. When satellite first came on the market, or atleast a few years in, I said to my employer, who you can figure out, “ don’t you think satellite will hurt radio?” He said, “ no way” people want free local radio. “. I completely disagreed that it would not be a threat.
