I don't think people are mad at you, they may express a different opinion. We are just saying that certain formats, through research and so on, are popular among the majority of people despite the absence of others. You can't please all of the people all of the time, but they want what will best
make them money. If that means rock, sports talk, or whatever, then that's the way it is. If you live in certain markets you may find a huge amount of stations playing country, black gospel, classic rock, R&B, and so on because it works.
Traditionally Boston has been said to be a weak market for country but WKLB proved them wrong.
But note that (except maybe with some rimshot signals like WOKQ) there is only one station. It does
very well. Maybe the type of format you'd like could also do well--one station with it, attracting
a good amount of listeners, but so far they haven't tried it, or maybe in the past it just didn't
work (smooth jazz, for example) so they shy away from it. Who knows, something like that may
get a following someday, but for now we have to put up with what they give us. Things can
change. I gave the example of the "active rock" station up in Burlington VT, WIER, which now
has adult contemporary. Reason? A Montreal station nearby changed their music mix, and
Burlington's WEZF switched to a hot AC format to capitalize on it. This led WIER to dump
the rock and pick up the former WEZF format. It's what they think is best for business.
Thus Burlington/Plattsburgh's active rock fans wind up with "Mix 102" instead.
Not everyone will be pleased. Even then, you can still find perhaps what you'd like via things
like HD radio or satellite radio, or webstreaming. (For example there's a free app for your
computer called Screamer Radio where you can pick all kinds of music or talk, etc., and find
things to your liking. I noticed for example one station called Aloha Joe Radio with Hawaiian
music and gave a bit of it to a friend whom I figured would like it. Not enough demand for
it on the regular radio dial here, but you can find it if you try.)

(From WIER entry on Wikipedia:
"WIER switched to adult contemporary as "Mix 102.3" on March 30, 2012, filling the format hole left by WEZF after that station had flipped from adult contemporary to hot adult contemporary a few weeks earlier. The AC format appeals to be more adult top 40 leaning... but the station does play fewer 1980s hits, much like its hot AC rival WEZF.")
