What will be really interesting is when Tegna's deal with Nexstar goes through... 3 and 8 could be sister stations and may consolidate their staffs. There will be some news, sports and weather personalities at BOTH stations that will likely get pink slipped when Nexstar takes over.

Channel 5 has been a mess on and off air for decades. It's been a revolving door for everyone and it's only getting worse. That station has not been the same since Ted Henry retired. It used to be number one until the early 2000's, when Channel 8 became dominant again, Channel 3 got a big boost from "Dr. Phil," and Channel 19/43 got more competitive with its "Action News" format. 5 couldn't really compete.
It's happening at pretty much all the Scripps owned stations. It just hurts a bit more for WEWS since it is one of the first Scripps stations, and there was such a strong legacy there.
I should add that I have heard horror stories from how staff was treated, to management's continued efforts to keep blowing up anchor teams. One friend of mine tried to get in Channel 5 as an intern in 2008, but was turned down before trying to maintain contact with one of the reporters. He was later told by the internship coordinator to stop contacting the station. He was visibly hurt by the conduct. One of many examples of how toxic the environment has been at 5 for decades

Why did he keep contacting the station after he was turned down for an internship?
Because the reporter promised he would get my friend in at the station. I think that friend was lied to by that reporter. He was more bothered by someone else telling him to stop contacting the department he wanted to intern in rather than from the unit themselves.

Rob Powers is trying to play the old school "voice of authority" anchor from the 70s/80s.
And he does have a touch of Ted Baxter in his game.
Next year he'll mark a full decade at TV 5 as their lead anchor.
I have to say Betsy Cling and Mark Johnson are the best in Cleveland when severe weather threatens. Now that they are on the same team, WKYC is my choice when things get rough. CH 8's weather is behind the times and their weather people just bumble their way through severe weather interuptions. CH 8 does lack talent with their weather segments. Their "Hollywood Square" picture arrangements drives me nuts when they are sitting behind their computer montor while giving the weather and I change the channel.
My dream team has always been Mark, Jason and Betsy. Matt Wentz is awesome too. Totally agree with you on 8. They are terrible.
Even 19/43 has a better weather team than FOX 8. I will say that I'm surprised that 5 didn't go after a big name to replace MJ. No one even as the "chief" title either.

Re: 11pm on 55 - Unless they changed things since I last checked in right after the launch, the 55 newscast is taped at, like, 7:30 and launched with live weather and sports reporting, leading into the prerecorded news stories, so it's "live" by proxy of the sports/weather teams doing one last report before they clock out and head home for the night. I know that, in the beginning, the 11pm newscast streamed commercial-free and was over before 11:30, so I figured that they just prerecorded the news part and just ran live weather and sports to kick it off because those teams were already in the studio. I could be wrong and it's all live now - I haven't checked in since Labor Day, so it could have changed - but I doubt they're paying the anchors to stick around for ANOTHER thirty-plus minutes when they're already in-house between 7:30 and 10:00.
