Markets where CHR doesn't do well....

What are some markets where CHR doesn't do well? We talk about successful ones, but I'd be interested in hearing about some markets where CHR just doesn't do well.

Memphis, despite having two CHR stations now, hasn't been very friendly to the format. The market is skewed heavily towards the African-American population

What are the call letters of these chr's?

WHBQ-FM (Q107.5/96.1) and KWNW (Radio Now @ 101.9).

I also recall San Francisco not being very friendly towards CHR (at least mainstream) until recently. With the format's growth now, very few places now are unfriendly to CHR.

^Yeah, for years CHR had a lot of trouble in San Francisco, Chicago, Baltimore, and Norfolk VA - but I think the fact that CHRs now can lean extremely rhythmic and still be considered mainstream has technically helped these markets become "CHR-friendly"

Back when there was more rock on the CHR chart, these cities really couldn't maintain a mainstream CHR station

There was a period of time in the 90s when Washington DC couldn't sustain a CHR either

They certainly don't look like they are very heavily African-American skewed to me! None of them even play "I'm on one" by Dj Khaled! They look like normal pop leaning rhythmics, or the types of chr's that cater to hispanics on the west coast. As a matter of fact, I wish Atlanta had WWVA on a full signal, AND at least ONE station like those Memphis CHR's to compete with WWVA on a full signal (instead of TWO urban ac's, with one of the two using two signals for itself)!

It would be nice if Q100 was like the WHBQ station, playlist-wise (although I think Jan Jeffries could take that music and arrange it in a better fashion)....

As a matter of fact, I wish one of the Atlanta urbans outside of V103 were also open to urban influenced pop hits rather than just being strictly urban. I'm sure if One Republic "good life" with B.O.B. wouldn't cause too much harm if mixed in an contemporary urban mixshow. After all, V103 even used "only girl" by Rihanna!

It's not the CHR stations that are skewed A-A; I was meaning the Memphis market (over 40%). That could, perhaps, explain why CHR doesn't exactly set the world on fire in Memphis.

How about Dayton, where Rhythmic Top 40 WDHT has a 8 share over Top 40/CHR WDKF. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the next book now that WDKF switched signals from 94.5 to 99.9.

Indianapolis. None of their CHR stations are doing to good in the ratings book. Actually.....other than me working in Muncie, this the first time I've remotely heard of a CHR station in Indy.

That just goes to show how nonexistant CHR is in that market.

What's funny about the CHR in Indianapolis is that it's owned by Radio One - now that is strange. What would they know about running a CHR format?

Cumulus failed there with i94 as CHR but none of those stations have done well. That station is now Hot AC. It seems like the market prefers Adult CHR, as WZPL does well.

Add Boise, Chattanooga, Dubuque and Pensacola to the list, according to the Spring 2011 book.

In Boise, 5th place KSAS is trailing 2nd place Rhythmic KYWD.

In Chattanooga, WKXJ's Rhythmic lean is putting the hurt on the broader based WDOD.

In Dubuque, WPVL is trailing KLYV badly... very badly.

In Pensacola, WJLQ is in a world of hurt thanks to WABB/Mobile.

CHR does very well in Dubuque. Even though it is in the form of the Cumulus owned KLYV. They are usually either the highest rated or second highest rated station in the market. WPVL is trying to market itself to Dubuque but it is actually based in Platteville, WI. With Dubuque's very hilly terrain, it is possible that WPVL can't be heard in all areas of the city. Once you get into the Mississippi River valley portion of the city, you just can't get any out of market signals. At least those there that can pick up WPVL do have a choice rather than being stuck with a station that went downhill after Cumulus bought it. KLYV was a great station in the 90's and is still living off that heritage.
