Miami Move-In Filed @ FCC for 104.3

PBGFL said:
According to the FCC database, 103.1 Indiantown is listed/licensed as WEAT-FM - not WIRK - as of June 1, 2012.

It's possible the WEAT call letters moved to 103.1 as a place to simply park those call letters for the time being. The Sunny format has already moved to 107.9 according to the Sunny1079.com website.

I know this is a long shot of not happening, but what would happen if the FCC rules against the moving of 104.3 to Miami and says it must stay in the WPB market?

Won't happen. As long as the application meets all the spacing rules (and it wouldn't have been filed if it didn't - these people know what they're doing), there are no grounds for denying it.

Scott's right that 104.3's not going to be denied. However, if, somehow, 104.3 were denied the ability to move to Miami, Goodman would have to either sell it as a West Palm Beach station or sell a different station.

Same as WLRN plus the fifteen full power commercial FM's near County Line Rd.

Crazy idea---but now that CBS Radio Sports is on the way, do ya think.....(I know CBS sold 104.3, but "affiliate" doesn't necessarily mean O&O.)

Not a crazy idea. I thought it would be a good idea for Lincoln Financial to buy 104.3 so they can have a FM simulcast for 790 the Ticket.

Is that a feasible idea?

Yes, even though LFM wants out of the radio business, it WOULD beat QAM to the FM punch. They already have the Heat and Marlins. They just hired a new PD for Majic as well so 102.7 The Ticket is out of the question (at least for now).

Then again, with Power 96's questionable (at least on these boards) health these days, which Beasley FM could easily become WQAM-FM if push came to shove?? Power or KISS?

Beasley is not likely to purchase the station. The company is not that well-off financially. LFM doesn't even want to be in the radio business. Plus, with the cuts they made recently in Miami, they would not likely add to their portfolio.

We might all be surprised who buys it. As I said before, Salem was on a big buying spree several years ago for their "Fish" format. They like having an FM "cash cow" to help pay for their AM talk and religious stations. Miami has the AM's, but not the FM.

Sports on FM might work here, but only if they can take the Dolphins away from Clear Channel. If sports happens on 104.3, at least two of the AMs would go bust. (remember, there are currently 4 sports stations in the market; WQAM, WAXY, WINZ and WMEN.)

Between the poor night signal and the legacy Havana station, 640 counts for nothing.
How many stations would it take to carry the four professional sports teams with no chance for conflicts?
Two would likely suffice.

While you're correct that Beasley isn't well-off financially, I could see it purchasing 104.3 much the same way it bought KOAS and KVGS in Las Vegas. Beasley bought those stations personally, LMA'ed them to the company, and allowed the company to buy them from him at a much better rate than what it could get from the banks. I don't know how likely such a scenario is, but I wouldn't dismiss it outright either.

I agree with you here. I'd be surprised if LFM were to march in and buy 104.3, even if doing so could make some level of sense.

I also agree with you that a buyer we're not expecting has a good chance of buying the station. By the way, the irony with Salem is that, in most cases, it was AM cash cows paying for their FM's. Those brokered religion stations they run make an incredible amount of money, and most of their "Fish" stations haven't done well. The Fish did so badly in Chicago they swapped it for an AM!

I don't think getting sports rights would be essentially to the well being of a sports station. Certainly, it would be helpful, but low-rated sports stations do just fine in the billing department. It's one of the few formats you can sell without numbers.

Does anyone know if an application has been filed for the sale of 104.3 to Goodman.I don't recall seeing one...Could CBS be thinking of holding on to the frequency and when the move is approved put CBS Sports radio in 104.3 in Miami ?

The deal is a little more complicated than just a sell of 104.3 to Goodman. If you search FCC applications under "WEAT," you'll notice there's a clause at the bottom of the application for a "WEAT Option Agreement" and a "WHFS Option Agreement."

In other words, Palm Beach Broadcasting isn't buying 104.3 and 106.3 at this time. They've paid CBS north of $10 million for an option to buy those stations, which includes the permission to assign that option to a third party buyer if they choose. They also have an LMA in place for those two stations, which I would assume they're assigning to a trustee since the law doesn't allow them to LMA a station they can't legally own.

So, no, CBS isn't intending on holding onto 104.3. They wouldn't have assigned Goodman an option if they wanted to keep it.

I dont think so. Only because, why did it take CBS this long to make the application for the move? They want to sell it.

Nobody has mentioned the big 'ole white elephant in the corner of the room...EMF!!

They have the cash and they are one of the few "big" players looking to acquire signals right now. Don't be surprised if Air1 gets a full signal round those parts

Otherwise, perhaps Beasley...although I would not be surprised to see ESPN push its weight around to get a FM down there...either directly or perhaps a long term LMA with a buyer...they will need it with the likely defectors to CBS Sports Radio!

I also wanted to throw one more player out there, although they may not be interested to pay for a brand-new full market commercial signal. I could see Classical South Florida plop down on a full-market signal to try and reach Broward and Palm Beach a good bit better which might mean more donations...
