MIKE BARNICLE TO REPLACE IMUS PERMANENTLY ?

>>I'm not sure Severin would play as well in the morning as he does in the afternoon. Some shows are just made for certain time slots. Severin was given the big bucks to counter-program Howie Carr, not to have his head handed to him by Dennis & Callahan.

You have a good point and as I said, he wouldn't want to get up VERY early from his mansion in
Manchester-by-the-Sea...

Barnicle...won't take calls. Courageous.

>>Carr makes too much money for a station switch, especially to a time slot for which he's probably not well suited, Carr is a natural for PMD.

True, unless WTKK moved Severin to middays and put Howie on PMD. Entercom can be tight with the money
but they also realize he's their franchise player (unless somehow they think the franchise player is
a certain former House speaker...)

>>Switching to a more competitive time slot and a station which would lower his audience and visability wouldn't make any sense for Carr or WTKK. Besides, his 'distress' at the sports preemptions was mostly just part of his curmudgeon act

True

>>How about Miller instead of Egan and Braude? Heck, I'd listen.

As would I

>>Wasn't O'Reilly moved because he couldn't turn a good enough midday number? If so, I don't see where anything's changed.

I didn't know the reason, but I thought they just wanted to beef up local content during the daytime
(hench the tripling of E&B's hours, though Graham lost an hour). Maybe he does belong at night tape
delayed. He's technically up against himself (the TV show airs at 8p of course). Same situation in
some markets like Providence (IIRC) where Glenn Beck, tape delayed on radio, aired at the same
time his CNN Headline News show did.

>>I dunno. Myers has a way of wearing out his welcome. He was disliked enough at WBZ TV that the techs sabotaged his final sportscast. When I knew him, 20 years ago, he played the chippy 'angry Black man' role so incessantly that he had everyone wondering what hell he was talking about. Perhaps he's mellowed, but I don't think he has, or would have, enough appeal to become a major player in the talk wars.

I'm not saying I'd do that, but THEY may...he's on their bench for right now, doing fill ins though I think
he may have gotten a brief weekend slot?

>>I've never understood the attraction of Hannity. Although a lot of folks seem to like him because of his politics, every issue seems to be all about him, and he has an annoying habit of injecting himself into every interview, at the expense of whatever point the interviewee is trying to make. Plus, he gives new meaning to the description 'apostle of the obvious.' But, nothing succeeds like success, and he certainly has that, in two mediums.

You make good points there and he can be a bit much at times, but he can also be entertaining. I do get a kick out of the fact that a liberal blog referred to him as "Slant head"--as in, he tilts his head when talking to someone on his TV show. They're right! :)

Bring Back Gene Burns....! He's even younger than Imus. Obviously, too intellectual for morning drive . . . and no "meridian to pass". ;)

Does Barnicle get to bring his IPod to the (now former) Imus show? That way he can eat up the show clock by playing the music his kids left on the PC at home.

Perhaps he will he just show up with a newspaper so he can read articles from start to finish and save everyone the two bits it could cost them to buy the newspaper themselves.

Then again, if he does the show from WFAN he'll have to amend his shtick about getting to George Grey's Toyota (take the George Washington Bridge towards White Plains, get on I-84 up to the Mass Pike, Mass Pike to Route 128, Route 2 to Lexington, drink the fresh orange juice at Wilson's Farms, etc.).

Sounds like great radio to me!

Plus we can listen to Dan "The Pride of Holyoke" Shaughnessy on a regular basis. It doesn't get much better than that!

Severin makes too much money to work middays. The time period won't support it.

but they also realize he's their franchise player (unless somehow they think the franchise player is a certain former House speaker..

I think Howie will be their franchise player for the forseeable future. I'm not sure WRKO expects Finneran to surpass Howie, but to just improve on the crappy AMD numbers which have plagued them for years. Respectable, and saleable, numbers would work just fine for them for now. A major move upward would be a real bonus.

As it is, WRKO looks positioned to ring the cash register non-stop for the next 6 months.

>>Dan "The Pride of Holyoke" Shaughnessy

I thought he was from Groton...?

As for Gene Burns I don't know if they can lure him away from the Bay Area
but it would be good. KGO runs him weeknights at 7 pm Pacific; if they could work out
a deal _'RKO_ could run Burns after the Sox games

Imus had to go! Now that he's not in the radio biz, I will tell you, like Dr. Romano on ER who got cold cocked in a bar, Imus had it commin' ! Folks, those of you who haven't had the displeasure, let me tell you, this was a nasty guy to just about everyone.

I bet he shows up on the Stern show and sitting next to Howard on XM. Or is it Sirius now?
Either way, Imus going is a good thing. Don't let anyone tell you this was about free speech! The guy was a (fill in your insult) to people behind the scenes.

Stan Lee said it best: "With great power, comes great responsiblity." It's a responsiblity that Imus squandered.

Trust me, Boston radio waves are better for it.

If I recall correctly, Imus and Stern don't like each other....so unless they make amends, the possiblities of Imus showing up with Stern are next to impossible.

My T.S., every comment from you is kissing 'RKO's butt. Why?

Huh? I was agreeing with Racoon that Howie is WRKO's franchise player. Is there anyone who knows anything about Boston commercial radio who thinks that isn't the case?

And, yes, WRKO hired Finneran to try to improve the AMD numbers. You can't be a 50kw player as a talk station without a competitive AMD show. You may disagree, but this is strictly Radio 101.

You may think that the Red Sox are not going to be a big money maker for WRKO. You may also think the world is flat. Whatever you think, it certainly isn't my fault.

Good thing I didn't mention that Custer lost at the Little Bighorn; you'd accuse me of sucking up to Sitting Bull.

In fact, everything I posted is either obviously true or easily defended informed opinion. So what is your point?

Thanks for your thoughtful input.

by the way Mike Barnicle (only filling in for what-was-Imus on WTKK, not nationally) is apparently doing a 4 hour shift during this 2 week period; rather than having him do 6-9 am and bringing in someone like Jimmy Myers
for Mike's reg 9-10a shift (that was their orig. announcement but they soon backed off). While the WTKK site does
still link to a bio page on Imus, when you click Mike Barnicle's bio it says:
Mike Barnicle
Monday - Friday: 6:00 AM - 10:00 AM
(for 2 weeks..or maybe for good? Will he actually take calls now?)

>>You may think that the Red Sox are not going to be a big money maker for WRKO

If the ratings they get in AMD are the same as what they got before (or maybe even lower) with Finneran,
I'm sure they won't worry--not as long as the Sox are hot, and they will be. All the ad money from Sox
games will easily pay for Finneran, Carr, etc.

mike was going to be in nj. that's why he couldn't his local hour on 96.9. they were going to have jimmy or someone else filling in for him. when cbs dumped him as a replacement, he became avaialble to do both for 96.9.

i still don't understand why would they bring in myers for an hour? why not just have graham start an hour ealrier. but then again, it's greater media. their moves make little sense.

BINGO.

First of all, Barnicle does take calls a lot. The only exception is when there's a guest. Do you folks ever listen? Also, since Imus was fired, there isn't an Imus show to fill-in for. Duh.........

seemed to me the few times I tuned in it was just him and his guests and regulars; no calls (I'm talking about his one hour and previous two hour shows, not necessarily any fill ins he may have done for Imus)

check your facts.s since he went to ah hour format, he hasn't taken a call, only from celebs trying to sell a book or plug a business.

Yep, all guests now.

I doubt it. Remember, Howie Carr, successfully sued Imus, via something that I think Barnicle relayed to him, and he disparaged Mrs. Carr on radio. Dershowitz represented Howie Carr.
