Mike Harvey's Supergold expanding?

L

Guest
Last night I was chatting with a buddy of mine who works at a station in the midwest. He was saying that sometime in the Spring, Mike Harvey's Supergold will be expanding from its current Saturday only broadcast to a Monday thru Saturday one. This is the first time I heard this. The last time I checked Supergold's site, nothing was said about it. Anybody else heard this?

Supergold expanding?

I heard the same thing a month or so ago and called his syndicator and they didn't know a thing about it. I think when he was doing mornings in Florida, CC was talking about it but that was probably 5 years ago.

Somebody else is doing a weeknight show, anyway, so it would make totally zero sense to try such a venture when you got beat to the punch and in a format that seems to be fading away (vs. growing). It's not like people are clamoring for new Oldies shows- quite the contrary.

I talked to Mike as recently as several weeks ago and he mentioned that he was moving forward with getting the show on a Mon-Sat basis as early as the first part of February. Even if he picked up a handful of oldies/classic hits stations, it could be enough to make a few bucks. Besides, these days a lot of the surviving oldies stations are jockless at night....why not put on a live request show?

What does Mike Harvey's sound like now?

I haven't heard him in ages. His show, like Bartley's, isn't carried in a lot of markets.

I do remember him playing inferior copies of songs, this being the early 90s. I always heard better sounding stereo on Bartley.

Harvey, however, used to dig a little more into the late 50s and early 60s.

Does he still play some of that or has he pretty much ditched that era like Bartley?

He's more into the late 60's through the late 70's now. We had a discussion about that a couple of months ago and his feeling was that it would make the show sound a bit more contemporary. I agree, as long as it's the RIGHT songs.

Harvey is going to do a weeknight show that is to sound like he is only at "the" station you are listening to. They plan to launch it before April and are signing stations up now. There will be magic calls and such, much like an ABC, WestWoodOne format off the bird.

Is this the Supergold© Press Release?

An amazing concept for Mike Harvey. He must be using some sort of new Machine to help him with his delivery?

Too many questions about this "Live" request show?

Even when it aired live from Hollywood, request segments were pre recorded due to time restraints. So Mike is going to work live 6 Nights a Week, PLUS his other commitments?. I would assume he will be voice tracked, and the feed run for 8 hours nightly for flexibility. Mike even had his own Country & Western Truck TV Show distributed worldwide, he looks like Kenny Rogers now :)

Supergold© Press Release?

that was a little mean, cat. One thing to diss a concept, it shouldn't be personal.

That's a shame.

That's a shame. His show used to be so much better.

His show and Bartleys along with some others is where I learned my Oldies 101 in the late 80s and early 90s.

Too bad he's wanting to sound more "contemporary" for an oldies show.

His Web site is a mess. None of the links work.

I keep hoping the shows will someday move to XM. Then maybe they willgo back to sounding like they're old selves again.

UPDATE! I spoke with Mike on Friday and he's going forward with the plan to do the show Mon-Sat but there will be a delay getting it on. It's mostly a logistics issue but March or April doesn't seem out of the question.

Quite a few affiliates are good to go when the time comes so it sounds like he'll have a successful launch.

Supergold

but how can his syndicator have no clue about such a show? It would be very unusual to have separate syndicators distribute the weekend show AND the weeknight version, don't U think?

Someone else noticed the fact that Mikes Website never worked. Perhaps it will be Jones as the syndicator, and they could 'can' Dave's Diner?. What about more news on the new syndicated Drake/Watson Oldies format. I still don't see the need for Mike Harvey 7 Nights a Week. Once a Week was always just enough!

I agree, the syndicator should be aware, but we didn't discuss that. Hey! I'm just telling you what I know!

Anyone heard his weeknight show?

If you like oldies, MIKE HARVEY sure isn't the place to listen anymore on Saturday nights.

More like 70s AOR. Sweet Home Alabama. Hotel Calif. Layla. 70s Rolling Stones.

Oh, there was the BEACH BOYS spotlight where he went out of his way and played ONE Beach Boys song that hour I had him on. No kidding. He took a request for a chestnut and said, BTW, we're doing a BB spotlinght tonight! Like he was doing something out of the ordinary.

He ought to change the name of the show to somethin' else. It 'taint oldies.

Of course it's "oldies." Just not "your" oldies. Songs from 30 years ago are indeed oldies.

No one (and by that I mean stations) wants the old Supergold (50's-60's). Can't make any money with it.

The older Super Gold sure sounded better, more like oldies than it does now.

Then, it lived up to its "super" label. Today, SWEET HOME ALABAMA, ABBA, KC & SUNSHINE BAND, disco and other crap makes it sound like any other station. No magic. Nothing special.

Supergold

In case you haven't been noticing Oldies stations dying left and right, the major hits of the '70s are now a necessary ingredient for Oldies stations and Oldies shows. Bartley and Harvey could keep playing Herman's Hermits but they can generate zero revenue with an average audience age at 60+.

True. And the PD's of the stations that clear the show would scream bloody murder if he went back to 50's/60's. He's had to add 70's and some early 80's and drop pre-Beatles or esle there would be no affliates carrying it at all!
