MIX 106.5 Stunting

You heard it here first.

They put the "Mia" format on 106.5, and I will be shocked. Shocked. The Cleveland market proper may eventually be able to support a full-time Latino station, but not yet. Heck, WDLW/1380 had to give it up as a full-time format back in 2002 because it didn't bill a dime outside of Lorain (its' COL).

My gut feeling is starting to trend towards "Power 106" or "The Brew." All of the "Gen-X" buzz is raising up my antennae, especially if no genxcleveland.com domains have been registered as of yet... And if "Lite Rock 106.5" somehow makes a return, I will eat my beret, lightly sauteed with a side of asparagus. :p

My latest.

I'm almost ready to move my betting money over to a relaunch of "Mix 106.5", even under that name! ALMOST.

While the site was blanked for the countdown clock, if one looks internally at the source code (right click with your mouse on that page and select "view source") inside that mess of coding and letters... the Mix 106.5 website still exists!

In fact, after the station reverted from "Mixmas" on Monday, the site was upgraded to CC's new site design standard.

It may not mean a damn thing... but... you never know. ;)

The rate this has been going, I have a sneaking suspicion that the 'big reveal' tomorrow morning might just be a hoax in preparation for the actual format to make its' debut.

A good example is the prank CBS Radio Detroit pulled when they blew up WVNV-FM, the city's smooth jazz outlet.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_fl4Ldk0Es

CBS did an apparent relaunch of classic rock "WLLZ The Wheels," but the first song "Welcome to the Jungle" was abruptly cut off mid song, and the actual new format, WDZH "Amp Radio" was revealed.

Tom Joyner is heard now on a simulcast of WERE 1490/WZAK 93.1

CC isn't going urban because Radio One has a death grip on that format here (WZAK for the adults/WENZ for the young 'ens) and anyone trying to fight them will be squashed.

Same goes for anyone trying to go country against WGAR, soft AC vs WDOK, or classic rock vs WNCX.

The only format in Cleveland where CC could overtake the established station is sports talk.

WKNR can be had if the competitor does it right.
Well we don't know that because no one has ever competed against Radio One. If CC can bring in the right personalities, they could take on both top-rated stations head-on.

Consider this: CC and Radio One have been battling in Detroit for some time now,, both Urban/Hip Hop and Urban AC. I don't think CC is afraid to take on Radio One. Consider that going Urban AC goes after an un-challenged format in Cleveland, frees 105.7 to add any music 106.5 dropped and it doesn't encringe on any other CC frequencies Also, WZAK runs lots of (non-local) talk morning and afternoon making them a target for a station that would emphasize music.

Could the market support two successful AC stations given that AC is both listener and advertiser friendly?

The bold statements being made by the liners about "Cleveland radio getting a whole lot better" sounds to my ear as something new in the market. How would it be "a whole lot better" if it's simply a simulcast of another station or even if it's a direct competitor to another station/format already in the market? Then again, they're saying "better", not "different" or "new".

Is the new 106.5 simply a flanker to protect CC's big money makers (WMJI, WTAM, WGAR), or is it a serious attempt to win a demo/format?

Will CC spend big bucks on this format change including multi-media promotion and on-air talent...or simply run music with sweepers and maybe some minor voice-tracking?

Whatever....it'll be what it it'll be. And, the drama will be over soon. And we can return to our lives. :)

Given the underperformance of anything Hispanic in the PPM world.....no, it won't be Latino.

In fact, there were promos during the Browns game today promising a "totally new station", in the local promo slot presumably normally occupied by WMVX.

I'm not sure what that means, or what the Mix coding still in the temporary site means. (For one, there's still Christmas stuff in that coding, which suggests to me that they didn't bother clearing it out, just changed it.)

I can't see CC doing an Hispanic format in this market, particularly on a full-market B.

I may be missing it, but isn't the point of a stunt to gain attention? I see nothing when running a search of WMVX in the Cleveland media. There are a handful of Twitter and Facebook posts, but little else.

If a station changes format in the woods...

That's actually a good question.

When WMVX flipped to "Mixmas", I saw at least two brief TV blurbs on it. I haven't seen any after this stunt.

Why? Maybe they're a victim of holiday staffing at the various media outlets. Maybe Julie Washington is on vacation...if she was around, she'd pick it up at very least off my blog.

And then there's this: Oak Tree did send out an official press release for "Mixmas", which all the other media outlets got (the CC list was open, I saw it), but hasn't done anything for this...though I'm sure they will whenever the new format launches.

That thread looks really strange looking at it through 2011 eyes.

And of course, CC had to do absolutely nothing with 96.5, as it returned to the Officially-Owned-By-Oak Tree-Fold.

At least we didn't kick around 106.5 as an FM sports station!

You make the possible "Fox Sports Radio 106.5" sound like a bad thing (lol)

No, not bad, aside from maybe inflicting "Petros and Money" and "Loose Cannons" on all of Northeast Ohio (that infection is contained to 1350 in Akron and 1390 in Youngstown now)...just not gonna happen. :)
