More signs of a pending 94.9 format change

WYAY 106.7 could go AC and pick up where Lite left off, or even an oldies format would be good. Could FM talk work, especially since the recent changes at WGST?

Usually the week or so before Christmas, Lite-FM starts playing promos about keeping the Lite on after Christmas, where you'll hear continious Lite favorites like Elton John, Gloria Estefan, etc. I have yet to hear those promos yet. If they don't start those promos by next week, it's a safe bet they're flipping to something.

In the city of Atlanta, you can listen to Country at 99.3, 101.5, 106.1, 106.7 and 107.1. In the suburbs, you have Country at 92.3, 92.5 and 104.3. Yes, I've listened to 99.3 on the lower level of a parking deck, surrounded by skyscrapers. It does reach and I've listened to 106.1 in Cobb County. I'm sure there are more. There's a lot of Country out there and I have a strong feeling 106.7 could become something else if 94.9 becomes the Bull. Most of those Country outlets are located inside 106.7's 60 dBu contour.

If you think 106.7 will try something else, what are your guesses there?

I am not really sure if we should group all of these country stations together as they have different target audiences. Kicks 101.5 is more of a modern country format whereas Eagle 106.7 is more classic country. I have received 106.1 and 107.1 here in Cobb County inconsistently but I don't think these and any of the other stations you mentioned target Atlanta. Since most Atlantans commute, they would not be willing to listen to distant stations that would fade out when traveling from Kennesaw to Marietta. I have seen WTSH and other outlying country stations show up in the books at times. The fact that these small town country stations even appear indicates that there is an under served market for country in this area. The Bull seems to be more of a new country format to compete directly with Kicks and I doubt it will hurt Eagle.

I may be reading too much into this, but I just heard a Target ad on Lite online (not sure if it went out over the air) for a CD by Jack Ingram, a country music artist. It may be nothing, but thought it was worth noting.

I see Eagle flipping especially if Lite goes Country. I think this Southern Fried Friday night is a direction they are headed. I really think a Classic/Southern Rock and Country hybrid could work since some of what Eagle is already playing was considered rock when it came out. For example the CDB (Charlie Daniels Band) was a rock band but became Country once Country started using the same elements which I think led to the explosion in popularity that Country got when I was a kid in the 90's listening to it. Besides there is no where else for the 96 Rock crowd to go other than The River which really doesn't serve them well because Classic hits is different.

If you think Classic Hits is different than 96 rock you obvioously have not listened to 96 rock in the last couple of years. 75% of it seemed to be the same playlist.

Also don't read too much into the Target ad . Last week I heard an ad promoting Jay-Z's new album on the Project. I don't think they are flipping to urban any time soon.

If Eagle were to flip, where would its audience go? Remember that the Bull will be more of a new country format and not the same as Eagle. Eagle does attract a significant audience especially older males. The idea of have a country/Southern rock hybrid could work. Eagle and Kicks broadcasts a similar format called The Wolf http://www.thewolfatlanta.com/ on their HD2 channels. It seems to have generated a good response already and I hope they incorporate some of the music on their main channels.

It's not so much the playlist, but how often music was played. I turn on 96 Rock in the morning and it was talk radio. I'd turn it on in the evening and it was baseball. What if I want to hear MUSIC for a change?

Word is WLT 94.9 will flip Monday 12/18 but it won’t be a country Christmas at 94.9. However you can count on them Movin into 2007 with a very different sound. So grab your party and get ready to yell Whoopi on Monday!
If you think this is just Bull check out 96.7 after the Lites go out.

Is that the Buzz? Hmm...I suppose 96.7 has always been dealing with Wild rumors, which ain't exactly Bull. Clear Channel should Maximize their music Mix and start focusing on some Real Radio. Man, that would be Cool...so Cool it would Rock.

105.7 and 640WGST simulcast for a while. This ended around September of 2000, with the birth of Mix 105.7.

CC murdered the Peach name at 94.9 on Christmas Eve 2002. WHY? Lite plays the same stuff.

When Cox changed Fox97 (97.1) 97JAMZ in February 2003, CC almost immediately changed MIX105.7 to Cool 105.7. Shortly thereafter, Randy and Spiff reappeared on "Cool." Meanwhile, down the dial, 105.3 was "The 80's Channel, 92.9 was Z93, and 102.3 was Lake102FM(Music for people who graduated high school between 1974 and 1980.) I don't remember the exact order, but sometime in 2004, 105.3 went all talk, Lake102 became LaRaza 102.3. Then 105.3 became Spanish Viva 105.3, and Z93 became DaveFM. Then 96Rock re-branded as classic rock/hits. When CC gave up on Cool, the moved Viva from 105.3 to 105.7 and moved Randy and Spiff to Lite94.9. November 2006 CC changes 96Rock to Project 9-6-One Stupid idea. 105.3 and 96 simulcast for 20 minutes (A few weeks) Now 105.3 Spanish again.

CC doesn't understand that there is a huge audience of English speakers in the 35-60 market that WANT to listen to music radio in the car. We are the radio generation. Real Top40 started in the early sixties and died in the 80's. XM here I come.
