Most and Least Favorite Chicago DJ'S

Geez, I, too, grew up listening to Howard Miller on WIND, when other teens were listening to that "horrible" rock and roll. While Lujack influenced Limbaugh, Miller was the "original Rush Limbaugh of radio"--at least in Chicago.

Speaking of WIND. I must be having a senior moment, but wasn't there a Jim Holt on afternoons from like 1 till 4, before Bill Berg's show?

Yes, Jim Holt WAS afternoons when WIND was talk, and already out of the Wrigley Building. That seems so long ago.

I forgot 2 buds, Chuck Benson and Kurt Russell. on WIND. HILARIOUSLY Funny, lots of voices, and funny characters like "Barrington Kenilworth III" and others. Not sure of their current fate.

I also enjoyed Chicago Ed, Larry the Legend and Robert W. Morgan, on 560.

...I'm positive that Paul Gibson at WBBM would have a stronger claim on that title than Miller...

I'm positive Paul Gibson would be the "champ" as well. Howard Miller was a great "politician" an "everyman." He could express a "Chicago
listener viewpoint" better than anybody.

My dad loved to listen to Paul Gibson, so I got to hear plenty.

Here is how I remember him; Gibson was an early "curmudgeon" - being crabby and opinionated when others around him were "accomodating, Gibson was "ANTI-FEMINIST " long before that word was around (his programs w/sweet and charming Lee Phillip were revolutionary for their day), he spoke of his dislike for MUSIC, calling it "a drug" and mostly, if the majority was "fer it" Paul Gibson was "agin' it." Gibson was quite "anti-Religion" as well.

This was prior to "listener calls" on the air - so the floor was all HIS, unless "Miss Lee" was allowed to rebut and he would obliterate her.

To me, Gibson was MORE articulate that Lujack (and less funny than Lar - more pointed), on a par w/Rush, but Gibson's attitude of "I really don't care what YOU think - here is MY take" was comparable to "Savage."

I really don't remember Gibson's "politics" but DO remember his rants that "ALL woman were second class." It was spoken as though He must have been through a terrible divorce or some totally unfair episode (in his view) - this during the "Ozzie and Harriet/Donna Reed/Beaver Cleaver" era, so it was VERY unique.

Also, I was listening to all this during the time when I was "starting to notice" girls - so Gibson's views were quite "foreign" to my personal view, and I couldn't fathom NOT liking music, so was listening to Paul, less.

I believe I also discovered WGN, (especially Wally) and WBBM then, had much less appeal for me. WGN was "more human" while WBBM seemed serious and "way too adult."

...try four terrible divorces. Worse than Tom Leykis' four, if that's fathomable. It's as if his muse didn't just leave Gibson, she planted a pitchfork in his buttocks on the way out ;-) ...curiously, he did frequently speak nicely of children on the air...

IMHO the BEST. In no particular order (and limited to music hosts)....

Howard Miller
John Doremus
Art Roberts
Mal Bellairs
Herb Kent
Norman Ross
Marty Faye
Jim Runyon
Dick Biondi
Connie Szerszen
Jim Stagg
Daddy-O Daylie
Franklyn McCormick
Fred Winston
Ron Riley
Bob Murfin
Patti Haze
Ron Brittain
Gary Gears
Yvonne Daniels
Clark Webber
Jerry G Bishop
Bob Stroud
Dick Williamson
Lucky Cordell
Joel Sebastian
Eddie Hubbard
Richard Steele
Paul Rogers
Bob Hale
Chuck Benson
Barney Pip
Larry Lujack
Teri Hemmert

(I know I'm overlooking a few, and I apologize for that)

My favorites include The Late Great Don Vogel,The Late Great Uncle Bob Collins,Chicago Eddie Schwartz,Norman Marks,Steve and Johnny,Clark Weber ,Wally Philips,Milt Rosenberg, and those who hosted WGN's Great Music From Chicago including Jay Andre and Mike Rapcheck .

My list was limited to those who at one time or another hosted music programs, hence the term "DJ...or disc jockey". Talk show hosts, IMHO are a different category and another list....of equal distinction.

From from those named on the previous poster's llist, Mike Rapchak would also be on my "DJ" list. Most, if not all of those names would make my talk show list...along with a number of others. Dave Baum, Jack Eigen, Dan Sorkin to name a few "openers".
