Ken, didn't you see Cox as kind of meanspirited?
Example- I once heard him go on a rant and take calls because "there were too many rednecks in Pittsburgh."
I am assuming that Cox is not a fan of Charlie "What This World Needs is a Few More Rednecks" Daniels.
While no metro area is above criticism, this didn't seem to be that. It seemed to be kicking a town when it's down. It spoke of "I'm from Chicago and I'm better than you."
It was a cheap gimmick designed to draw response. Whether the response was constructive or not did not matter.
Then, I'd go to a Pirates game and there was Cox, gladhanding like a weatherman, presumably with the rednecks he had so much scorn for, in spots airing on the scoreboard.
Disingenuous.
I'd listen more to The X and here would be some DJ, I do not remember who, ranting and raving that some Calfornia town was spending public money to rid itself of a "goth problem" and why this was a bad thing.
Look- just play the Marilyn Manson song and be done with it! If I wanted political talk- let alone on an issue in California- I wouldn't be listening to The X.
It spoke of a subordinate DJ TRYING to be like Cox. I think he left something of a legacy there that still may exist with the hires made after him that simply isn't very original- and considering what the numbers of the station were before the Pens started their run I'm not sure were that productive.
It seems to me that a lot of the "I'm going to say negative things for effect" broadcasters around here are being taken off the air- and quickly. Madden, McIntire, Hoerth, etc.
That's a positive.
