Most and least favorite Pittsburgh DJ'S

When you combine his horrible voice with his seemingly endless, humorless rants, Grimm is totally unlistenable. It is unfortunate that he is the one who works the shift before most Penguin games. Penguin games are the only reason I listen to the X.

The early 13Q staff, especially Jackson Armstrong, Chuck Brinkman, Some WPEZ jocks, particularly Big Jim Ryan, Striker McGuire and Eddie Edwards. So many good ones. Least favorite; Sheri Van Dyke.

I personally liked Allen Cox from the X. I thought he had an edge that would have worked in this town and could have turned into long-term career potential if the powers that be were willing to pay for it.

Ken, didn't you see Cox as kind of meanspirited?

Example- I once heard him go on a rant and take calls because "there were too many rednecks in Pittsburgh."

I am assuming that Cox is not a fan of Charlie "What This World Needs is a Few More Rednecks" Daniels.

While no metro area is above criticism, this didn't seem to be that. It seemed to be kicking a town when it's down. It spoke of "I'm from Chicago and I'm better than you."

It was a cheap gimmick designed to draw response. Whether the response was constructive or not did not matter.

Then, I'd go to a Pirates game and there was Cox, gladhanding like a weatherman, presumably with the rednecks he had so much scorn for, in spots airing on the scoreboard.

Disingenuous.

I'd listen more to The X and here would be some DJ, I do not remember who, ranting and raving that some Calfornia town was spending public money to rid itself of a "goth problem" and why this was a bad thing.

Look- just play the Marilyn Manson song and be done with it! If I wanted political talk- let alone on an issue in California- I wouldn't be listening to The X.

It spoke of a subordinate DJ TRYING to be like Cox. I think he left something of a legacy there that still may exist with the hires made after him that simply isn't very original- and considering what the numbers of the station were before the Pens started their run I'm not sure were that productive.

It seems to me that a lot of the "I'm going to say negative things for effect" broadcasters around here are being taken off the air- and quickly. Madden, McIntire, Hoerth, etc.

That's a positive.

Best:

O'Brien and Garry (Don Imus quaked in his boots when he heard they might be moving to NYC in the early 80s)
Sean McDowell, especially duing his days at WYDD
Quinn and Banana Don in the mid 80s
Bob Dearborn
Don Berns
Dennis Waters
Kelly Randall
Striker McGuire
Bat Johnson
Bruce Kelly
Clarke Ingram on B94 in the mid 80s
Randy Miller
Chuck Brinkman

Worst:
Anybody who Gene Romano hired

I'd add Jackson Armstrong to that "best" list and say it was dead on. Glad somebody else remembers Kelly Randall... truly a great guy.

Agreed, Parttimer. I always think of Jack Armstrong as a WKBW alum, since I listened to him on KB when I was in high school in Connecticut. He was fantastic on 13Q!

Mean spirited? Not really. I think much of what you described was someone trying the rookie way to generate listener response. I personally wasn't above taking cheap shots like that myself over the air back in the day. As I got older, I stopped worrying about impressing the higher-ups and put my listeners and clients first. However, this was back when jocks weren't under half the pressure that they are now. Jocks are all but ignored when their ratings go up, but management is all over them like a cheap suit when the numbers dip...no matter how small.

I thought Cox had the ability to generate response and not back down from a disagreeable listener. Would he have continued to push the envelope as did Mark Madden? We'll probably never know that for sure, but I think jocks given more freedom to do their thing will be more successful. I think much of the trash-talk stems from talent's frustration of never knowing what management expects of them, which is nothing new, but the feedback from management these days is nothing short of sheer relentlessness.

The radio battle for the "kids are allright" back in the day between Clark Race on KayDee, Ravin'Dave Scott on 'QV" and Porky on WAMO. We had 5 presets on AM and these were the must haves. The other two were WZUM and for night time------WABC. I would call Cousin Brucie a favorite Pittsburgh DJ. You could also add Jerry G. on WKYC, Dick Biondi on KB, and John R. on WLAC. Then there was Terry Lee Sunday nights on WMCK .

How about the night time Chicago DJ's and the WHOT night time dj's. I used to listen to WCFL, WLS< WABC and WHOT in the evenings.

Ah yes WHOT and WRED-FM .Remember the daytime country format on the FM, then WHOT-WRED Top 40 simulblast starting at 5pm back in the 70's? They also had an overnight jock as I recalled named Big Dick (Dick Thompson) ;D

Don't forget Barney Pip, Jim Stagg and Ron Brittain, the top ten review at 9:50 ( our Time) and Chickenman who you can enjoy at XM6 again now.

Yes but as good as they were they were not later on Pittsburgh radio stations for years like O'Brien and Dearborn mentioned in the earlier post.

WCFL flipped to TOP 40 in 1965 taking Jim Stagg and Jim Runyon from WKYC. Another big TOP 40 station when I was in high school was WEEP for Joy. Tony Graham, Perry Marshall, and Jack Armstrong ( don't know if it was the future Jackson Armstrong). I lived in Squirrel Hill and WHOT had absolutely no signal into that area. I used to listen to them while driving to Cleveland. I think at one time WHOT, WEEP, and WJET were under the same ownership. At some point WKBN 570 flipped to TOP 40 and they did come into most of Pittsburgh. However, I think that in the late Fifties and early Sixties---CKLW had the best night time signal into Pittsburgh. I can't remember any jocks however. Tom Shannon? As far the most influential jocks for my generation, I'd say they were:

1) Chuck Brinkman
2) Dave Scott
3) Porky Chadwick
4) Clark Race
5) Jim Quinn ( although a bit late)
