I realize there is a lot of tongue and cheek in some of the replies here. However, no matter how frustrated a person may be with regards to corporate or in this case, Renda Broadcasting, I don’t believe it serves any point to tear down format decisions until the ultimate report card over time – the ratings – can be digested.
All this banter about tearing down a heritage station disturbs me a lot and I can’t stand the fact that the majority of postings that are negative get the most response. There’s hardly anything heritage about radio nowadays but even a market like Jax can delight in the fact that we have stations with a long history and track record in serving the community. I think it’s great we have a WQIK, WAPE, WFYV, WEJZ and WOKV that have been doing their thing for a very long time. Not easy in a medium where change is constant.
I’m no two-face as I was never shy in telling it like it is no matter the corporate owner. But I believe in this case, we have to at least start out with benefit of the doubt. Let’s at least acknowledge that they have done one helluva job in positioning Gator as a major competitor and they did that when there were already two country stations in the market. Their morning show has been a big success in pulling in listeners and they have retained them too. It’s a nice co-existence if you ask me with WQIK. And so now, like it or not, there is Legends. I just hope everyone can play nicely in the sandbox. There’s enough to go around if you never let your guard down or go through the motions. Let’s, at least, give these guys a chance with Legends. They have had success before, maybe lighting will strike again here.
