I would almost bet that Tom Murphy would like to go back to 96.9 for mornings, but Cox has a problem with re-hiring people from their past.
Someone mentioned a few posts ago that this format has been blown up twice in the last two years in Jax and that's clearly the truth. However, the first time it was blown up was due to Scott Walker cluttering the station with Charlie Van dyke sweepers (In case Scott didn't know, 96.9 dumped Van dyke 5 years earlier because he no longer "fit"), allowing little personality to the presentation, weak on-air promotions and not paying any serious attention to scheduling the music (The Beatles NEXT to Badfinger?). The ratings took a serious dive, which resulted in a format flip within a year of Walker taking over. Scott's fault? Yes, but a lot of the mindless input had to come from corporate.
The latest episode was the Briggs era at 100.7 where absolutely no attention was given to anything! It was quite obvious that Briggs didn't know the music, muchless LIKE it, and contributed NOTHING to the station. Terrible music rotations. Senseless promotions held over from the disasterous Arrow years. A morning show that kept listeners away in droves. Jockless middays. All of that contributing to one of the very weakest efforts EVER on any station, regardless of format, in a market the size of Jax. That whole episode was a disgrace!
To get back to the point. Cool 96.9 had a very high cume for many years, typically top 3 in the market. Had 100.7 launched the newer KOOL in a manner that was updated and professionally executed they could have easily captured a large share of the old Cool's audience. But, obviously, that didn't happen. And don't give me the old sob story that "Renda didn't put any money into it". Bullshit! They had all of the tools; Jingles, the music library, Selector and a transmitter. Tom Murphy should have been put in the morning, midday could have been voice-tracked (if absolutely necessary) by one of the very competent people in the building (such as AJ Davis) and PM drive could have been handled by a competent PD.
It's very unlikely that anyone will give "oldies" a try in Jax again. The format has been beaten down and bastardized by unskilled labor!
