Less than a 1 share 18-34 female and 25-45 female :D No where to go but UP but how much?

isnt it too early for movin's new format to be reported in a trend?

They are probably realizing they blew it! KFRC , KYLD , KMEL ,KISS, KIOI, all sound kind of similar!! The commercials on TV for MOVIN, are poor quality, They are wasting aolt of time and $$$$!!!! I predict that format will fail miserbly, with in a year!! Personnally I listen to XM, This is a expensive experiment, And CBS lost alot of Loyalty, they can never go back and get their listeners back, they MOVED on while you did your Experiment!!

This is all the fault of Doug Harvill he ruined this once great radio station! Just like I knew he would the first time I learned that he was being sent in to run KFRC AM/FM. He had no clue and still doesn't have a clue and he never will have a clue as to the value of this legendary station. He has demonstrated his total lack of radio experience while at KFRC at least three times already. When will the brass at the top wake up and send this guy packing along with Tim Jordan and Mike Preston and themselves too if this boneheaded idea was theirs first!. What they need to do is hire JMF, Bobby Ocean, Jack Friday, Howard Hoffman, Harry Nelson, Jim Carson and Sylvia Chacon along with The Duke Dave Sholin to program the station. Or just put on a similcast of KCBS News Radio 740 and put the music format out of its misery!

K.F.R.C. "Keep Friendly Radiating Cheer" or "Known For Radio Clearness"

Which Came First? I know, do you and who first came up with the slogan?

RadioStarone, wow, you said it!! Doug Harvill should find another line of work!! Like effective today!! Your line up was great!! CBS/ Infinity are deaf, they just dont hear what people say! I went to XM last year, however if Radio could possibly go back to what it was, i would be there!! And with out a doubt,John Mack Flanagan should be the first hired!! Not Overlooked!! The Bay Area has had the Ron And Cammy , Dean and Cammy long enough!! Its time for a change!! For the news, get Vicki Liviakis, away from KRON!!! I hope Movin 99.7 fails and CBS sells, and the new owners listen to what were saying!! The Democrats are back in power, Listeners should have a little power or say so, in what they like!!

That first slogan should actually be "Keep Forever Radiating Cheer." And I believe it was KFRC pioneer Harrison Holliway who coined the term.

Although "Keep Formats Rotating Constantly" also works right now...

Whoa. Let's get real. I'm no fan of Doug Harvill...but first of all - it's WAY too early to say if Movin is a bust or not. Has the format even been on the air for one full rating period yet? I agree with some of the criticism regarding the music - that it repeats a lot of the music heard on Wild, Kiss-FM, KBLX, etc. I was also disappointed when the old format was blown up.

But when people talk about Harvill "ruining a once great radio station" I think they're talking about the old Top 40 Big 610 which has been gone for 2 decades. The Oldies format was cookie-cutter crap for about the last 6 years. Just because they ran the old Drake jingles didn't make it the old KFRC. The morning show (Cammy and whoever) was just awful - one of the worst on the radio. I used to tune in to hear Bobby Ocean's afternoon drive show because I think he's great. But I put up with the crappy music to hear him. About 2003 or 04, the station cut their already limited playlist to the approved "K-Earth" like 300 or so songs. As much as I liked Bobby, I was getting to the saturation point with that music. If I heard "Take a Letter Maria," or "Honky Cat" one more time I was going to lose my lunch. IMHO, the station started to suck WAY before Harvill entered the picture.

Yes - the change to Harvill's short lived soft-rock oldies music was awful, but I think "Classic Hits" was actually an improvement.

I'm all for bringing back a GOOD Oldies format (a playlist of at least 1,000 songs would be OK), not to mention Ocean, John Mack Flanagan, and the other great jocks - but the writing is on the wall. Our Baby Boomer demographic is not wanted anymore, apparently. In the meantime, I mostly listen to NPR, which doesn't have to bow and scrape to the world of advertisers. Ben Fong-Torres column this Sunday mentioned that KQED is actuallythe Bay Area's number 2 station in terms of total listeners. That says a lot. If I spent more time in the car, I'd join Mr. XM and get satellite radio.

Funny. Apparently that song title I just mentioned was censored. It's an Elton John song that Oldies KFRC played ad nauseum that ended in ..."Cat"...the first word starts with "H." I think Elton was using the word in the same context as "___-Tonk" not as a racial epithet. I remember that the site's censoring software also kicked in when people talked about legendary DJ Charlie Van...you know.

All of the comments are very interesting to read of course. What we all forget is that radio is not a static media. It "has to" move on and change. I don't disagree that many times the quality we are all used to has been downgraded. Everyone knows that the young audience is not very radio friendly and is much more stuck on I-Pods and similar devices than the broadcast spectrum. Therein lies the problem of what to do about it all. Do programmers delete personality (good or bad) in favor of more music? I personally think it can be executed using on air talent, but I may be in the minority. On a positive note, we must remember that management "must" think paying high salaries for morning talent is valuable. Because they do it. Although, I'm not sure if they are sure why, except for, let's say tradition. So, we ask then...why not for the rest of the day? PD's always say there isn't much to choose from when filling slots. The answer in my opinion is easy. There are few role models available anymore. Howard Stern maybe? Not many more. So they just play the music.
In my career I had many. Dan Ingram, Dr. Don, Joey Reynolds, Chuck Browning, Jay Cook, Hy Lit, Joe Niagra, Stations like WABC, WLS, WFIL, WCFL, CKLW and a few others able to be DX'd at night that gave me a wonderful pallete of talent to draw my own personal on air profile.
I know I've mellowed somewhat. ;) I many ways I've become a "listener"! Sometime the DJ's really get in the way. But I still am in disbelief when I hear the execution of new formats. It's almost as though and probably is that there is so much at stake considering the high price of properties, the timid and safe approach is the best. I don't agree, although I see it happen and hear it happen all the time.
I would not be happy with a small market share gain, when so much more is there for the taking.
So, management must make the choice, to risk or not to risk. I think most of us know what the choice will be.
By the way...thanks to those who mentioned me in their posts. I'm doing great. Even though it really hasn't been that long since I was on the air in San Francisco, it seems like eons ago. I was so fortunate to work along side so many, many talented people there. I do miss not being on the air full time and most certainly miss California. It's just to damn cold here on the east coast! I'm still getting my airtime and enjoying it on WXTU in Philadelphia. But don't say a word to anyone that I'd take a PD or full time shift in CA...anytime. I miss the Dungeness Crab and great food there like crazy!
All the best to everyone. Have a great Holiday Season.

Jack is so right about the "Herd Mentality" ("you have a morning show, I have a morning show". ...) But this has been going on forever. Twenty years ago someone asked, "Why do they keep you on middays, at KWSS? No one has a midday jock!" (Thanks!) Charlie Tuna said 35 (!) years ago, "Everytime I make a mistake I create a new format!" My only shock is someone hasn't grabbed a chain of stations by the throat and created a 20th century form of radio. Live. The woman who asked me to be on her tv show last night said, "People are looking for something real. You're real." Where's the 'real' radio?

Is Jack Friday sitting on the East Coast posting? Wow! This is exciting! Talk about 'world wide' .... -John-

P.S. Jack is one of the most brillant people I know. I'll take his word anyday. I miss him and wish we were still together. (There's an opening on Graveyard shift..highrise security. Come on out Jack! hee hee) -John-

K.F.R.C. The answer to which "Code Phrase" came first?

To Arthur H. Halloran, editor of "Radio", an official delegate of the Coast broadcasters to
Secretary Hoover's conference in Washington on October 6,
goes the credit for the code phrase by which the fans will remember the call letters KFRC.

"Known for Radio Clearness!" said Halloran, and every fan within a thousand miles wrote it down.

Installed as a unique station of a new type, KFRC--"Known For Radio Clearness"--has already
justified the expectations of engineers and the hopes of its owners.

Please go to oldradio.com to read more on the first days of KFRC! The Once great radio station so clearly destroyed by the trolls at CBS Radio. Be sure to thank the owner of Oldradio.com for having such an eye openning website dedicated to the early history of radio. Also feel free to contribute any information on the early history of radio that you remember.

Lkeller, at 53 growing up in the Bay Area, this is a time for some media giant to come in with deep pockets and turn this "Cesspool of Radio " around! I couldnt agree with you more i hated the Ron and Cammy , that program was an Insult to Radio! Mornings and afternnon drive was a joke with those two!! Then all of a sudden Bobby Ocean comes back!! Afternoon drive was fun again!! I continually called and Requested Getting Gary Bryan back and John mack Flanagan!! Never happened!! When Sylvia Chacon left that was a perfect time for JMF!!! But no, They bring up someone from KRTH to do the 7 to 12 pm shift!! Christopher Lance was the guy! They should have left him at KRTH !!! We had talent here already!!Perhaps Bob Hamilton could get something going so this Bay Area can have a Oldies station again before Im 75!! Movin 99.7 is weak radio!! Doug Harvill has got a long road ahead of him!! Im a firm believer in DJs, Its part of radio, tracked or live, Its a must have for me!! Im sure theres plenty of profit to have DJ s on at least till midnite!! Look at how well "Russ the Moose Syracuse" did for KYA 1260 in the Sixties on his all nite show!! Ron Parker if you read this dont come back to the Bay Area, your not a radio guy! Its time for change and the most recent change is fine with me , I want the 60 s and 70 s staff back!! Cammy please go back to your sports announcing job , Theres a need for change Kenny in Concord!!!

I agree about Doug Harvill. Not the brightest. How he moved up from EZ Communications is beyond me. Another Dan Valle "Pick". :D

You can also put that little midget Greg Strassel in the same category as Douh Harvill.

This post started out as Movin's ratings and now it is back to our favorite subject and that is San Francisco radio the way it used to be.

People and business and broadcasting have evolved to a different place that we did not imagine.

KFRC has gone to Family Radio and we can't get it back. No one in the business of broadcasting who has the required millions of dollars will bring back personality radio the way it should be. That's because they do not have the passion for it. They need to work a deal on a station or stations wherre they start to make money right away.

Vickie Liviakis is in a great position as a news anchor and reporter for KRON-TV 4. It would not make any sense for her to move back to radio.

It's also good to hear comments from Jack Friday. Jack I enjoyed your weekend shows on KFRC and that was in this century. Did you leave around 2003?

If some company ever developed a personality radio station again in SF it would not not have to have all of our past favorite personalites to become a great station. Yes some could come to the party but not all. It's like creating a movie from the past, you put the elements together and hit songs that you remember. However it is not the same as a movie that was made in the past because it will always have some of today's influences.

When Christopher Lane was here in 04 to 05 (at KFRC) he was of the present day with a type of radio (all requests) that has gone away.

Speaking of present SF radio, I have been recently been reporting traffic on KBLX and have realized that there is still personality radio here. And the DJs, just like John Mac Flannagin have all had other careers outside of radio. PJ just came out of retirement and was doing a remote from a new Safeway in Oakland and Doug Lee works a lot of the weekends. Yes it is an FM format with sets of music but it is all local and definitly not voice-tracked.

Last year we were able to view profiles of other members on this board. What happened to that feature? John Mac Flannagin, I would like to contact you so where do I write?

In conclusion is there a station or stations that a new company could purchase and provide a locally produced personality station that fills a void? If so what station(s)? Any ideas on what may happen with the local Clear Channel group?

Newsperson

A very interesting thread and very smart comments from everybody. I consider it a privelege that John Mack Flanagan has been contributing to this board for awhile, and now Jack Friday. Personality radio has always been hard to do successfully - since the basic element is the music, it must be a lot easier for programmers to skip the personality part entirely and just hire second tier "announcers" to read liner cards ("Arbitron rated number one for listening at work," "Old school and today's R&B" blah, blah). Have you ever noticed that KOIT really doesn't have less talk, just less ad libbing? But I digress...

What's interesting to me is that the radio most of us 50ish types remember fondly is from the Bill Drake era and just after - from the 60s to the early 80s. Thanks to Drake, playlists were slashed, programming clutter was cut, and DJs had strict time limits placed on their talk. Yet the best of these DJs (Flanagan, Ocean, Friday, etc.) had the talent to work within the time limits and still be funny, entertaining and engaging. I grew up in LA with the Real Don Steele - the guy never even used the full talk-up time available to him at the beginnings and ends of songs. He got all his talk done in about 10 seconds, rarely made jokes and never used cute anecdotes. It was all about the station, the songs, and the contests. Yet it was very entertaining because of his voice, and his attitude.

Newsperson - I'll have to check out KBLX again. There are some DJs that are still fun to listen to - Tony Sandoval on Kiss-FM is one who comes to mind. I'll admit I don't listen to either station much because I long ago reached saturation point on the same few dozen "Old School" hits. I'm happy that Al Green is a millionaire many times over just from radio royalties on "Let's Stay Together" - I used to think it was a great song - but I hope I NEVER hear it again...

Some of you posted on this thread that you listen to XM. Is anyone aware Bobby Ocean voicetracks channel 7 (XM 70's) starting at 3pm in your time zone?
I confess to only being in SF every year or 2 on vacation and never hearing Bobby Ocean until I got XM, but to be honest, I don't like his show. Maybe it's the combined limitations of tracking and satellite.
Can anyone (to the extent possible) compare his show on XM to his former gigs on broadcast? Maybe point me to some airchecks?
One other thing, I could've sworn I heard KSFO/KYA simulcasting in approx. 1988. They even had jingles...KSFO-KYA-FM. However I've told I'm wrong. Am I?
Thanks. Wish I could afford to live out there with you folks!
