You are right on the money about KSFO/KYA-FM it started in July 1986 with a rerun of The History Of Rock and Roll and just prior to KFRC-610 switching to Standards in August 1986. The combo got split up in the nineties by the First Broadcasting owner that also owned the Goodguys stores. KSFO became Hot Talk 560 and the FM remained oldies until it switched to country under Infinity's Broadcasting wonderful brainlessness!

Newsperson, His name is Christopher Lance, from KRTH, KFRC was so close to being another KRLA, they hired Bob Harlow and when you can hear "Cry Baby" by Garnett Mims and the Enchanters from 1963 on KFRC, its a good day!! I called this Bob Harlow, and commended him for turning that station around!! They were planning a "Time Machine" with Chrissy Edwards, they were close, and then oops time for a Format Change , Harlow is gone, and Doug Harvill is in, Goodbye to the possibility of Oldies, Harlow was from LA and KRLA was the best Oldies station on the dial!! This Bay Area was so close to what KFRC was about music!! Wherever Bob Harlow is now, I hope hes doing Oldies, One day I heard "Nothing But A Heartache" Flirtations 1969, i about fell outa my chair, Sue Hall playing this song, he was adding songs daily, We heard My Girl not so frequently, CBS made a big Mistake again! Putting another guy out of work! Kenny in Concord

It's also good to hear comments from Jack Friday. Jack I enjoyed your weekend shows on KFRC and that was in this century. Did you leave around 2003? (newsperson)

Thanks Newsperson. I did weekends for a while at KFRC when I returned there. Really lots of fun considering I was doing the "soft and warm" KBLX format just before that for quite some time in the afternoon slot.
It was really good to get back and have some high energy fun on the air again.
I had to go back to the east coast to take care of some important family business and got a call from WOGL, Infinity in Philly. What a surprise that was! I have to say thanks to Brian Thomas and Steve Rivers for the heads up to OGL on that call. So, I was asked to do weekends and fill in there, which worked out great for me since I was busy during the week.
I think it was late 2002 when I left. I actually came back and was on air at KFRC a few times during the next couple of years after 2002. Whenever I came here to visit my mother and friends in SF...I always got a shift or two on 99.7/610. Even did a phoner with Joe Eick while he was on KFRC doing his shift and I was on sister station WOGL doing mine.
But...as John Mack can and will tell you...those days at KFRC in the 70's were the best. Paul Drew, Sebasian Stone, Michael Spears and a cast of characters that will live on forever in my mind. We had so much fun...in and (mostly) out of the station. We all stuck together as a unit and at that time the folks on air at other stations (Tommy Saunders, Dusty Street, Tom Donnahue, Russ Syracuse, Bobby Dale, Vaco, even newsguys from KGO and KCBS and occasionally the TV folks too, were part of the group) they just joined us for fun when we were all out and about. It all usually started at Enrico's on Broadway and went on for hours. Life was interesting and rich in so many ways. Much different than what I see today. That balls to the walls mindset just isn't apparent anymore.
I'm not one of those..."Those were the good old days" types...I like to live in the present, but it was good.
By the way, someone mentioned Don Steele. I had lunch with Shawn (spelling?) Steele about 3 or 4 months ago in LA along with the late Mike Phillips...she is doing great.
Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving.

-Jack Friday-

KSFO became HOT Talk on Jan 1 1995 under ABC. It was a a crappy talk operation when
it was bought in Sept 94 but it was not Hot Talk. Bob Hamilton was running it for Unkafer
who had fired him when he first bought the stations in 1992. KYA was spun to Alliance broadcasting who then sold to Infinity in 1994. First Broadcasting sold KYA First then KSFO.

Unkafer, paid 13 mill to KING B'casting for KSFO/KYA and sold them both 2 1/2 years later for 27 million. To Alliance and ABC.

Alan Hotlan started the "talk with attitude" format on KSFO 560 when the oldies were dropped! Thanks production boy for the ABC timeline! Any truth to the LMA of ABC radio by Citadel story going around? LA Radio.com has it on the website!

I don't remember Alan being there when the oldies were dropped, and they went talk. I know, I played the last oldie just before 6pm, when Hamilton walked in and said they were going talk right then, instead of waiting until the weekend. It was on a Friday night. Production Boy's post looks right to me.

He moved to KSFO from a station in Denver specificly to install the talk format on KSFO! I remember right and it was in R & R too. Before that he was in Sacramento at KKSA 1030 AM. I know this because he and I went round and round and round and round over a price for all the records the staff of KIOQ 1030 took from me before it became KKSA as an adult standards formated station. He may be a great guy to some but not many because I know a lot of folks the man was not so wonderful to! He had a lot of SF talent working for him at KKSA, one of which was Buddy Hatten in the afternoons till the station was shut down by the bank and the owner was arrested and jailed for embezzeling which is another long story Nicoleson was the mans name just ask tony cox formerly with KCCL-FM, Boss Radio 101.9, Shingle Springs, CA. now the wolf! Pay attention to the trades and you will know what went on back then. I did! Hamilton was PD. Hotlan was the new GM.

Sorry you are incorrect...Hotlan was dismissed from KSFO when it was sold to KING on dec 13 1983. In the late 70's early 80's Hotlan and then GM Jim Myers Tried to intigrate
more talk into the Music format. It was a disaster...Remeber Bonnie Ring? Then when they blew that up they went to "Real Music" sort of a standards thing that KFRC started doing after KING Bought KSFO and Called it Magic 61. Hotlan worked on a failed station
in Folsom CA. With much of the staff that got blown out by KING when the bought KSFO. He then worked for Bonneville in LA and in SF (KOIT) and the top 40 thing they did and "The Drive" for several years till he was let go. He is retired in Florida now. Hotlan was NEVER there for the Oldies format That was KING B'casting and the First
B'casting. Allan never worked for King or First.

There is NO LMA.( that we know about) Citadel will get the 22 ABC stations when the deal closes, which is reported to be May 31 2007. This is a Merger remember. They still have not gotten final approval from the FCC and more impotantly the IRS That Disney will need to do any kind of a Tax Free Deal. ABC stations are still being run by ABC/Disney...cause they still own them...and will for a while longer. Also, because I know your gonna ask, The move to put Len Tillem on M-F was a Swanson/Luckoff Idea. Len's ratings are Very Good and people wanted more of him...It was NOT a Citadel Order or even sugestion. If they LMA the stations It will be after the first of the year, and I'm only guessing. Disney and Citadel have just changed the financial terms of the deal, so that has slowed down the whole. That was announced on 11/22/07.
deal. And that is what the Trades are reporting.

Wow are you wrong...Buddy got fired from KING (KSFO Pre Hamilton,Pre First) then worked for KNEW doing country, Then worked a Magic 61. And now owns and operates a Film Company in SF. You see my problem is I actually worked with these folks during the times
your talking about. Once again, Allan Hotlan NEVER worked for KING B'casting Or First B'Casting. And to the best of my knowledge was in LA in the mid 80's running I think the
Lite Rock KBIG for Bonneville.

In 1983 I went to work for KSFO/KYA, truth is I can't remember the name of the first GM.
since he was only their about a month after King bought KSFO, But the next GM was Ron
Seito, (he Died about 2 weeks ago) then Jim Kime, Then Ken Dennis. The PD's during those years were Ken Dennis, Rick Scott, Then Bob Hamilton. I was there from Dec 15, 1983 thru Jan 27th 1992. I was the Production Director 86-92 so I think I would have known who the GM Was.

I was on of only 2 people King offered jobs to from The KSFO owned by Golden West.
I worked for Golden West From 4/4/73-12/13/83.

Bob made me Production Director in 86' Prior to that I was doing the Sports Networks and Production.

Allan was in LA in the Mid 80's and never worked for KSFO while King owned it.

I don't get it, and I was there. The GMs were Ed Krampf and Bob Vitsoksky, not Hotlan. After Bob V left, Hamilton was made Acting GM. Sorry.

Some of you posted on this thread that you listen to XM. Is anyone aware Bobby Ocean voicetracks channel 7 (XM 70's) starting at 3pm in your time zone?
I confess to only being in SF every year or 2 on vacation and never hearing Bobby Ocean until I got XM, but to be honest, I don't like his show. Maybe it's the combined limitations of tracking and satellite.
Can anyone (to the extent possible) compare his show on XM to his former gigs on broadcast? Maybe point me to some airchecks?
One other thing, I could've sworn I heard KSFO/KYA simulcasting in approx. 1988. They even had jingles...KSFO-KYA-FM. However I've told I'm wrong. Am I?
Thanks. Wish I could afford to live out there with you folks!

quote author=RadioStarOne link=topic=54856.msg382093#msg382093 . What they need to do is hire JMF, Bobby Ocean, J

Nothing like sitting in a studio doing a show LIVE. Phone lines lit up, recording phone calls on the digital editor inserting effects, etc. Hearing audio processing Then doing it all LIVE. I'm sorry, Voicetracking 90% of the time:zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Great comments Laffer!! Harlow if given time, could have put KFRC on track!! I never met the guy, I did call him and talked on numerous occasions to commend him for doing the "New Format"!!! I will never understand why you need a "Movin" format here! Etta James yes, When Sue Hall played that, and "Hes A Rebel" Crystals 1962 hit, I was taken by surprise, How many times do you want to hear "Build Me Up Buttercup"? that had to be Cammy and Deans theme song, they Overplayed it!!With Bob Harlow, KFRC could have really done well, New DJ s too!! Dean And Cammy, out, John Mack Flanagan in! Jo jo Kincaid, No bring inn"Lee Baby Sims" lets have some fun!! These Bo-zos at CBS are penny wise and $$$ foolish with their Station!! Now days you have to pay to hear Oldies, If KFRC could have been run by Harlow, then I wouldnt need XM or Sirius! I would save 12.95 twice!! Someone needs to listen to what people want and its not C and D or the other ones, If your going to play music that "Takes you Back' hire the guys who took you there in the 70 s!!! KFRC only had one "Morning Duo" that was worth listening to "Gary Bryan and J. Paul Emerson!!! and Afternoons were John Mack Flanagan!! Middays "Lee Sims"!!!!!! I would pay to hear these guys on again!!Kenny in Concord

Thank you SFStatic, I knew we would get Radio Star to come around...I sat out the First Broadcasting KSFO/KYA...I was there for Golden West, King and ABC.

I watched with great amusement as Bob Hamilton and the Original KSFO/KYA oldies staff
walked up and down the street between KSFO/KYA and KFRC then back to KSFO/KYA, Then when Infinity Bought KYA back to 500 Washinton Street. What a sad period in radio that was.

But our friends at Clear Channel make that sound like a Day in the Park Now.

Hey, you missed a great time. We were as important to the Unkenator as a VCR on one of his shelves at the Good Guys. Some great people were still around then, but it was not the happiest of times. One truly great moment...when someone accidently scheduled the song of the day twice on Thursday, and the Unk had to give away an extra 10 grand! Boy was he pissed! We all loved it!

Ugliest part was the 500 Washington Young Country move. I bailed after about 3 weeks. They took the whole staff except Johnny Mack...that's what you get when a telemarketer from Texas is calling the shots, and thinks he's a radio expert.

We'll see what happens to Clear Channel after the taking it private smoke clears...could be way better, or way worse...place your bets now.

"We'll see what happens to Clear Channel after the taking it private smoke clears...could be way better, or way worse...place your bets now."

Hasn't Clear Channel announced that they will be selling many of their small market stations during the change? If so, it could mean the return of real local radio in some markets. I doubt things will get any better in the major markets.
