Muzak

Again, all of which have been in regular rotation on FM1 for years. Also, I would hardly consider anything from 2003 to be remotely "classic" yet. Might want to give it another 11 years! ;o)

Darth, I have never heard "Nobody Does It Better" on FM1 since it was added to our store in 2003 or so. The only Carly Simon songs I've heard since then are "You're So Vain" and "Anticipation", which still air today. "Nobody Does It Better" is a new add, on for several months now.

You've probably been getting a customised version (i.e. disc), then. I've a couple old FM1 tapes from 1999 and 2000 (tail end of the analogue/FM satellite era) that both have it. It's been in the "standard" repertoire for years, if not decades.

I suppose it's customized....all (400+) Burlington Coat Factory stores supposedly hear the same music. On the receiver, the LED readout says just FM-1 and we cannot change stations at all. So we're locked in...as they say.

Any other "lost gems" on those old FM-1 tapes of yours?

I wouldn't doubt it, since part of FM1's reputation, it seems (a big part, actually) is running the really "obscure" cuts that didn't really chart or only held on for a short while. But that'd mean transferring and logging some 300+ hours' worth of tape, if not more (and probably wearing out a couple VCRs in the process!)

Well, maybe one of these days.....

Your "curious mix" at the jewellers sounds like it could have been either Jukebox Gold on Muzak, or Classic Hit Blend on DMX (if they even still have that programme any more.) The latter sounds kind of like a very heavily oldies-driven and upbeat version of FM1, like a cross between it and JG.
I need to remember to call them. Only the oldies could have beeen on FM1, because they never do the harder stuff in my grocery store, if that's actually FM1.

I didn't ask what specific format, but they are still using Muzak.

In my grocery store I heard "Magic" by Olivia Newton-John one day (the only song I recognized).

I'd place bets on it being Jukebox Gold. Rereading your description, it seems too "mainstream" and "non-contemporary" to be present-day FM1 (there'd have to be a couple really obscure acoustic cuts from the late-2000s in there somewhere for it to be an FM1 sequence these days.)

Unless they, too, are getting a custom/ised programme.

If FM1 is in fact airing at my grocery store, it does not include songs as loud as these were.

I didn't ask where the music came from, but I went in an Ollie's for the first time. I heard "Johnny B. Goode" and I think something by Elvis, and something by Nat King Cole.

A really nice change.

This past Saturday there were a lot of familiar songs in my grocery store.

"I Feel the Earth Move", "Bad Day", and "You Can Do Magic".

I don't like any of these, incidentally. But in the grocery store, I'm happy if the songs just aren't annoying.

I'd much rather hear "I Feel the Earth Move" and "You Can Do Magic" than "Bad Day" for the 10 000 000 000th time. They* pretty much beat the latter to death in too short a time not that many years ago.

Same here....

btw, hearing selected hits added from early-mid 70's on FM1 this past month:

Jive Talkin' - Bee Gees
Midnight Train to Georgia - Gladys Knight & the Pips
Don't Pull Your Love - Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds
Crocodile Rock - Elton John
You're My Best Friend - Queen
My Maria - B.W. Stevenson

I've heard "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" and "Reunited" in recent weeks.

Also more 90's music being added lately, as well as Kylie Minogue 2002's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head"

With all the 70's adds and more contemp. 90's, FM1 is sounding much better these days!

Last Saturday at my grocery store, "Shower the People" and "Saturday in the Park", as well as a newer version of "Lean on Me". Now I heard Bill Withers' original this morning on my radio station, and there was one newer version with a beat on AC radio a while back, but this a different one entirely.

I don't know where JCPenney gets its music but they seem to be obsessed with "Single Ladies".

"Lean On Me" was covered by Club Noveau in 1987 and R. Kelly in 1998.

I knew about Club Nouveau but not R. Kelly.

There was another cover version this past Saturday at my grocery. A black female sang "The Heart of the Matter" (with a rap beat). Also while I was there: "Take a Bow", "I Just Called to Say I Love You" and something old by James Taylor.

Sears seems obsessed with covers. I heard "I.G.Y."

I was at K&W Cafeteria and I don't know what they've done. Until just a few years ago they had instrumentals, and when AEI was still around they had the letters "aei" on the door. They had vocals in Christmas music when I was there for several years on Thanksgiving. Not pleasant. Last year I heard oldies when I ate there with my aunt and had Thanksgiving dinner early, meaning I didn't have to make the trip on the big day (the nearest one is 20 miles away, and if libraries are closed, that's too much). I did the same thing yesterday and, while there were too many people for me to hear any music most of the time, occasionally I did and it was very loud! When I went to the restroom, but not in there, I could really hear it and it was AC. Probably mainstream, not FM-1. I didn't have time to ask the manager if it's Muzak but they're going to hear from me. Mostly old people eat in cafeterias so I can't imagine how this is being allowed. If I ever go back on Thanksgiving ... well, it'll probably be Christmas music. But they'll never get me in there again when it's not crowded, that's for sure.

"I don't know where J.C. Penney get their music, but they seem to be obsessed with 'Single Ladies'. "

Previously explained here: http://radiodiscussions.com/smf/index.php?topic=107740.msg1875136#msg1875136

A lot of times when preparing the custom discs, they'll simply recycle the previous quarter's (or month's) programme, add new stuff to it and remove a few cuts. Doing that also keeps the programming consistent from period to period.

Assuming they stayed with the company after the buyout, it's probably DMX.

F.Y.I., in a particularly ironic and slightly sick twist of fate, as of last March DMX and Muzak are now owned by the same company, "Mood Media". You may recall DMX had offered to buy Muzak out of bankruptcy a few years ago, but basically were given the cold shoulder. Can't blame Muzak for doing that, considering what happened to AEI! Looks like they ended up in the same boat after all in the end.

And by DC Talk, probably sometime in the late '80s or early '90s.
