Nashville's Glory Days

i was on the air then in gallatin but i swear i never thought wsm played anything but country since their inception..just can't imagine ralph playing van mcCoy, bee gees and elton john. i know wsm fm had jazz at night around 1980 with Kris Bradley..but was unaware of a split format on the AM..does anyone remember what the ratings were for daytime/nights? i was never a country fan but know ralph used to do late nights? and had all the opry stars come by all the time..that had to be before his midday foray into the land of boogie...as a kid i did listen at night on a 9 transister radio in the early sixties to wsm i think..it was country and i distinctly remember a "new" song by bobby lord i believe being introduced by the jock "life can have meaning" i think was the title..but somewhere around 63 or so i discovered jan and dean, buddy sadler and WLS at night...

I first started listening to WSM in the mid to late 70's. to me it was odd that they were top 40 daytime and country at night. At the time I first started listening I think the line up was
Ted Johnson Mornings
Teddy Barts Waking crew sometime during Johnsons shift only about a 1 hr 15 min show
Ralph Emery middays
Teddy Barts talk show in early afternoons
Pat Sajak afternoons
All Thats News with Al Voecks 5-6pm
Ralph Emerys syndicated show (country) 6-7
I don't remember the evening jock but Hairl Hensley did overnights I think.
They carried Vanderbilt Football and Basketball.
Bob Randall (Ranger Bob from the Ralph Emery TV show) was morning news anchor. I don't remember if they had local news at night but they had NBC radio news every hour at the top of the hour.
Someone mentioned they once carried Atlanta Braves Baseball, I guess that was before I started listening what year was that?

Don, my recall of Atlanta Braves baseball on WSM may be cloudy. My grandfather would drive us to Florida each summer vacation 1975 to 1980. His Ford pickup had AM only. We would measure WSM signal reach. Somehow I remember Ernie Johnson, Sr. as Braves radio PBP during that time.

I joined 650 in November 1980 anchoring and writing news from 10p - 6a, six nights a week. $5.50 and hour and no benefits -- but that's another story.
Chuck Morgan, Al Risin and Joey (can't recall her last name) were the over-night folks I worked with. And yes, they had news, boy did they have news then. We had 1 part time person to help on the weekend. There was 24/7 coverage(except for the Opry). Hairl was program director on AM and did mornings.

Bob Randall, better known with affection round the news room as 'Grump' was an anchor only. No news no writing, no interviewing, not even answering the phone -- Just reading. When he was told things were getting tighter and more would be expected of him, he listed all the things he wasn't hired to do and said he wasn't going to do them --- and he retired. Good fellow. As the old saying goes, he could read you the phone book and sount authoratative.

WSM was Top 40 once? I've lived in middle tennessee all my life(57 years) and I dont remember them ever being Top 40. As for the Atlanta Braves, WSM was a Braves affiliate during the 1960's. I dont remember when WSM stopped carrying the Braves, but I remember listening to Larry Munson, Milo Hamilton and Ernie Johnson do the broadcasts. :)

Buddy, Who was the morning News anchor after Bob Randall, The guy was at WSM for years and sounded very professional? I don't remember the name but he was there when you were. What happened to him?

The correct term for the format at that time would be "chicken rock". Ole' Bud, he made BIG bucks.

yeah, Buddy: who was the guy that actually sounded professional while you were there? ouch.

Arbor Mist for all...Buddy's buying.

Free AM??? That'll get Scott posting, again. Is 1560 even on the air, still or what?
I miss the daily update of what has blown up, who is pi**ed, is Disco finally coming
to Magic, it's still all Buddy's fault, etc. Is Scott okay? His angry little KY twin/alter ego has taken
a toll on this board. It's very lonely on here. See, Scott WSM-AM doesn't have all the power.
Update, and another fresh pour please?!? :-\

Romer, that is what i meant. Buddy was/is one of the best news anchors on radio. I believe for a few years the other dude did morning news and Buddy was afternoon anchor along with a newsstaff 24/7. WSM had a great News team at that point. If I offended Buddy I'll buy him 2 bottles of Arbhor Mist.

Don...I know what you meant, but it was just too easy to take a shot at Buddy.
He works three feet away...and it's fun to watch the reaction.

Don,

Never offended when someone remembers my name. If it's good, thank you, if not, I'll try harder next time.

(Romer...thanks for saying I work 3 feet away --- I'm still fooling em!) bs

Well, Well, Well........I love to be talked about and missed! Thanks for thinking about ole "Scott The Rock" fellas (and ladies too). I'm still here, 1560 is still on the air, and I've been busy doing some work around the ole 1560 ponderosa. I have joined forces with Lt. Dan Buckey, David Hooper, & Laurel Creech at Lighting 100 and we are broadcasting thier "Music Business Radio" program on Saturday Mornings from 9-10 AM, so I've been busy with that, in addition, buying a new digital console for 1560.

I received a call from "so called" my competetion the other day and he asked me to not mention his name on this board (Pat Julian a.k.a Deltas 69, and Bill Buntin knows whom I'm taking about) and not to mention his station on this board.

Let me remind him and his evil partner, that has accused me & Bill Buntin of lies that are not true about us, that the United States Constitution allows us citizens the right to FREE SPEECH! If I feel like getting on this board and saying AM Radio is dead, that's my right and somebody whom thinks he is my competition, when he really is not, has no right to call me, leave a voice mail, and tell me I can not say that here on this board. In addition, when you become a radio personallity, it's like being a politician or hollywood star. You put yourself in the position to be talked about on the internet. When my station went dark in September 21, 1991, I guess he thought it would be gone forever. (sic) We'll it came back and it's gonna be here for a while with me and Bill Buntin spinning the wheels of steel. :D

Fact is, AM Radio is not totally dead, it has listeners to specialty programming not found on FM, but due to the quality of FM, XM, ipods, mp3's. we don't have to wait to hear our favorite song on the AM radio like we did 35 years ago. I lived those days, and I miss them. I was a care free child, but times and technology has changed and we have to adapt to it, just like when the internet came along.

One reason why I say AM is dead is IBOC is not working well on AM and I wished Ibiquity would give up on that and just concentrate on FM IBOC. It's best to let AM stay in analog for the rest of the days it has left. When we all die off, AM will be gone with us anyway.

His station is going to get mention on this board, just like mine is. I question, what is he afraid of. I'm not out to hurt him, only to be his friend. When I put WMRO on the air in 1994, I HAVE PROOF, they were running around talking trash about me, and someone (an empolyee) from their station had the nerve to dig through my trash can outside the station, trying to find out my business. That is about as low as you can get. I caught them and they ran so hard to hide thier identity.

Bill Buntin and I were talking about this Sunday Morning and for 16 years, they wished that I would go away. Well boys up the road on Hy 109, I'm not. Bill Buntin and I are sticking together. I've known Bill for 27 years and he's been there for me when nobody else was. We all have are faults, and God didn't make me perfect, and I seem to appear on this board as having a alter-ego, but if you met me, Bill will tell you I'm very nice to people. Bill has been working for me for 16 years and he's not going anywhere, AND BILL BUNTIN IS THE "VOICE OF THE GREENWAVE", gee for nearly 40 years now.

Now I get off my soap box and take a shower!

P.S. We still love you Buddy Sadler, you should have been on WLS during R-n-R Glory Days. Gee, Buddy, you've got the voice!

Oh I forgot Tibbs and Pat, after all the drama we have gon through with the boys going up 109 North, I need a big TWO bottles of Arbor Mist!
