David, I just checked the ratings again for Flint and Lansing for 1988. WVIC and WIOG held the kind of numbers I'd mentioned based on these old issues of Billboard magazine that I'm looking at. Billboard used to publish the ratings for the Top 100 markets.
pbf1's insight also help us see where part of K-92's success came from, though a 30 share is an amazing feat nontheless.
At one point in the 80s Jan was at Q-94 Atlanta, and it was very adult sounding. The successful CHR in Atlanta at the time was Z-93 (till the ill fated attempt at Crossover/Rhythmic), before 99.7 retooled itself as Power 99.
Currently, Jaffries is really holding Q-100 back from reaching its full potential. It's got a great morning show, but the music mix leans too adult in a market that already has an Adult leaning CHR/Pop station in Star 94. Meanwhile, Rhythmic 95.5 The Beat is beating them both in the ratings overall, and WBTS's signal is hard to pick up in the actual city of Atlanta with a car radio. My car tuner can start to pick up Q-100 and Star 94 a good 3 hours away from Atlanta in some areas, yet has a hard time properly picking up WBTS in downtown Atlanta.
BTW folks, I realize this has nothing to do with L.A. radio but I'm a sucker for a good discussion about CHR radio, which David and pbf1 always deliver
