Know thats funny! I think I'm going to have to steal this one and use it as my own.

"Country "industry" people have been pushing country in this town for 25 years and still it goes nowhere."

I think it would be accurate to say that KKGO is a success.

Personally I think anyone in the industry should be more worried about people switching to iPods/iTunes as their primary music source than someone taping or recording a station's stream. After all, Apple refuses to put radio on iPods, probably so they can make more money from iTunes. Seems to me that this is the bigger and more dangerous problem. At least if you're recording you're likely to listen to commercials at some point and the stations will get some money from that. They get nothing from someone who uses iTunes as their music source.

Albeit a very modest one. In 18-49, they are tied for 24th (25th in 25-54) with The Fish at an equal number. More important, they have been slipping for the last several books (including pre-currency) and that does not look good for them.

Well is Zeb pointed out, there are 55 stations in L.A. so being 25th sounds pretty good.

I would think country has been the best performing format on 105.1. I'm sure they do better in sales than when they were classical or jazz.

I never thought about it but as much as a radio geek and just a general lover of music I am, I never owned an MP3 player, ipod or anything of the sort. my phone doesnt have an mp3 player either.

I have had cds, records, cassettes, 8 tracks, boomboxes, cassette decks, walkmans, transistor radios, AM/FM, Shortwave, CB, a radio with weather and emergency channels, SIRUS and XM, and Im going to get an HD radio. Most of my listening is done online. Yea I have downloaded music legally (of course) Turntables, digital turntables, reel-to-reel (and yea I can splice tape like it was digital editing)

Why have I never owned an MP3 player?

I have never even visited itunes or heard a podcast.

I have never given any thought to that until now.

There arecurrently 55 stations that make the book in PPM... but there are 91 stations licensed in the LA metro survey area.

Classical, for a while, billed very well... in today's dollars, much more than they are currently doing.

Of course, the station is family owned and has low costs... so they made a good choice... one that nobody else could justify.

JOHN, I LOVE YOUR QUOTE 'Please get off your high horse before you look like his behind." I have to send you a 7-11 money order for that remark :D :D :D :D Joe

Yes! Quite a humorous chestnut! Bully! Let's all raise a hearty "huzzah!" to SuperRadioFan's rapier wit.

What was the topic of this thread? OH --- The sound -- 100.3. It still sucks. The format is all over the road -- like a drunk driver. They should use the call letters -- KURB -- cause the format is to the curb and all over the road. At least I can follow the music and format of Movin 93.9. I still hate Rick Dees -- but 93.9 at least has a format. Anyone that listens to 100.3 has no taste what so ever. Listening to 100.3 is like having sand poored into you ears. You would have to have rocks in your head to listen to 100.3.

Good heavens. More vitriol. Seriously? Movin' is the guage by which you measure radio excellence?
I, unlike you, have nothing against Movin', but wouldn't hold it up as a paragon of listenability.

On the other hand, you did give Movin' a left-handed compliment. I suppose I should be gratified by the slightest glimmer of positivity around here.

This forum is where frustrated, failed DJs go to hate on radio.

With prophet, consolidation and syndication, that soon should be about 99% of everyone on the air. BTW, is that why you post here?

Artists don't get compensated for rado play, anyway. And compsers and autors only for public performance.

That's true. Even though I just read that some in the recording industry are trying to change that. I hope they don't, because it sounds like it would put a lot of radio stations out of business with the fees.

Recording the radio, like using the TiVo, for later enjoyment, has never been the subject of any copyright or royalty claims when for personal enjoyment AFAIK.

The MPAA says this is only cool if the DVR doesn't have digital outputs, like a TiVo. Making a DVD out of it or redistributing it is a no-no, as I'm sure you know. We must assume that SuperRadio has never sent a CD to a friend, or played music for another living soul, to ensure that he's clear of the grey area of copyright law. The fair use clause says that the factors determining legal copying include the "amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole..." and "...the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work." I think recording from radio is contrary to both of those criteria. Is anyone going to prosecute him? No. Could they? Mebbe.

Look, you are clearly the smartest person here, DavidEduardo, and you know a lot more than I do about this stuff. I don't have the legal bones to argue questions that people way above my paygrade are still hashing out. My only real point here is that "SuperRadioFan" is shopping for bananas in a hardware store. He hates LA radio, and loves podcasts. Got it. So, why is he still here?

Unless someone is selling recordings on ebay, or broadcasting them in the town square, or file-sharing them, making audio tapes of the radio is simply a non-issue. Move on.

Of course, I do get nervous every time I hear the "express, written permission of Major League Baseball" warning! :D

Agreed. The discussion began to highlight the hypocrisy of the person in question. He doesn't like the AAA programming at a station he admits on this board has never called itself a AAA. So, does he go out and buy the terrific AAA music he craves and bypass local radio? No, he tapes radio stations in other markets (some of which aren't AAA either) and tapes internet music streams and plays them all day. I submit to you that this person is far, far from your average consumer of radio, and not the target market of stations like the one he was slagging. It's like me griping that I can't understand any of the lyrics on KLVE. I, as you say, move on.

Of course, I do get nervous every time I hear the "express, written permission of Major League Baseball" warning! :D

Religious guilt? Or is there someone desperate enough for a hobby that they're actually recording baseball games?

SRF, You really like KINK 102 that much?? I listened to them on my iTouch (CBS Radio APP) and was somewhat pleased. I prefer WXRT over KINK though (I don't know if you knew this, but WXRT was my 'first' AAA station back in '90 - as well with a station from Santa Barbara KCQR 94.5 which went 'south of the border' eventually) Joe G.

Well Joe, out of curiosity, I revisited the WXRT playlist and I must admit, it gave me pause to give them another listen. They ARE diverse enough and while they play some classic rock tracks, it's not overdone. From a recent WXRT playlist, here's some tracks worth mentioning because they are "off the beaten track"!! THANK YOU, JOHN THE SRF. See 'XRT's recent foray into TOM WAITS, WILCO, PORNO FOR PYROS, SONVOLT...Now, my question to Dave and Haley...Are they REALLY trying to BE DIFFERENT when I'm hearing (right now on my Bose QC's) The Police "Wrapped Around Your Finger" (Haley and Dave, please READ & take notes!!) Joe G. in Redondo Beach

Oh MY!!! Let me add this ...I just heard MICHELLE SHOCKED 'WHEN I GROW UP' on 93XRT (iTouch) - Um, I just went to XRT as I got off listening to PURE PRAIRIE LEAGUE'S 'AMY' on THE SOUND (Dare To BE DIFFERENT) :-X P.S.
