I just read on the Chicago board that WZZN-FM flipped today to oldies. I don't have any other information - check out the Chicago board.

'ZZN, the former WLS-FM, is owned by ABC Radio. How long will the WZZN calls last?

Good point.

And I'm going to get excoriated by others on this board for this, but they should bring back (updated) WLS jingles when the calls change to WLS-FM.

But I know--listeners don't respond to that, &c.

Spare me, please.

Here, lest you all get distracted: consultants suck and the station should have a 10 million song playlist culled from the surveys of the time. Go fetch.

If ABC Radio decided to sell in the future, how much added value, if any, would there be in having the LS calls at the time of sale, instead of the ZZN calls? No, I'm not saying that they should sell the LS calls!!

Over the last fifteen or so years, the call letters "WLS" have become identified in Chicago with talk radio and not the classic top-40 format that used to blast it's way out at night to most of the "lower 48" at 890 on the dial.

On the other hand, prior to 1960, "WLS" was identified with "The Prairie Farmer Station".

This is great news for those of us who loved WRLL the way it was before they added post-1963 music to their playlist. Now maybe we'll get our radio station back.

Re: New Chicago oldies station WZZN-FM...Aircheck

There is an aircheck available for download on the aircheck board.

Chicago oldies

That's great news for you and WRLL's other 44 listeners.

if, IF (and they're big "ifs") they're going to do it right, they'd do a redux of WLS. Problem is, if their gonna stick with this real oldies thing, WLS' greatest years were the mid 60s to the late 70s. If they'd do THAT and bring back Music Radio WLS ala Lujack/Tommy Edwards/Fred Winston/Landecker, that would ROCK (just not with a music center at 1963).

I am wondering if ABC is simply stupid, does not get radio or whether they are stunting in some way in a transition to something else.

If WJFK saw the handwriting on billings and demos, and got out of oldies, why does ABC go into a format that is having trouble and, on top of it, take the end of the format that is not just 55+ but mostly 65+?

Not only did they go oldies, the went with old oldies.

Even if they get big shares 12+, it will all be very old demos, practically uncalled for in the transactinal (ratings and rate based dealing) that is normal in amakrket the size of Chicago.

Is the fact that JFK billed a lot more than the old format enough? Or do they have some secret plan or strategy that this is part of?

stupid,clueless or stunting?

Agreed on the "old oldies" approach and, on top of that, I'm told about half their programming will be via satellite (Shannon's deal).

I'd get it if they deduced they'd have a shot at WJMK-type revenue, but NOT with
the era direction they're taking. Oldies that are 60s & 70s based are taking hold in a number of markets, doing very well in some. Seems like a no-brainer but maybe this is another sign WHY ABC is getting out of the radio business.

Re: ABC... stupid,clueless or stunting?

First of all, David..... it was WJMK (NOT WJFK). I honestly wonder why you have such a disdain to the oldies format. Not everybody in Chicagoland is into AC, AOR, CHR or whatever the "buzzword" is today. 94.7 in Chicago was a loser, plain and simple. Many people wondered WHY ABC did not do this sooner. The WLS brand would show credibility in the market, IF they go that route. Chicago NEEDS a fulltime FULL POWERED FM oldies station. ABC saw that the void was there. Never mind the crap about "demographics". 94.7 and oldies would be a great combination. Add the WLS-FM call-letters and you would see ABC go to town.

stupid,clueless or stunting?

THIS JUST IN- "crap about demographics"? That is what it's all about- having listeners that advertisers want to sell to. It's the simplest concept in radio.

Without a desirable number and age group of listeners, what is the point of even being on-the-air? You'll have a signal and a product but if you're not competitive, you'll be out of business so fast it would be tragic.

Please get a clue.

Re: Chicago oldies

Wow, why so negative about a proven billing format? All this anger and hatred... tsk tsk tsk.

[That's great news for you and WRLL's other 44 listeners.]

I think there are about 65 of us now, if you include the unemployed former staff of WJMK. And if you're in radio, you may join us soon. Just keep watching over your shoulder for "Jack".

Chicago oldies

"Jack" doesn't bother me a bit. Anything that keeps listeners on the radio is good for the industry (methodology notwithstanding).

WOW- talk about the pot calling the kettle black. What the hell "anger" can you possibly be talking about (other than your own toward Jack stations)?

I have no hatred toward a "proven billing format". Just acknowledging what everybody and their brother knows- that WRLL, noble as their cause and as good as they sound, has few listeners and low ratings.

You must have missed your 10 grade journalism class. Where are your statistics to back up your statement of "fact". It must really bother you that oldies has not completly died out as a format. Go 'RLL and 'ZZN (or LS-FM).
