New FM News Station Coming to Houston! News 92 FM!

I've tuned to 740 KTRH before expecting to hear relevant news but only hearing right wing talk. If 92.1 can deliver real news when I tune in - they can count me as a listener.

Sounds like they have the great line up but can they make money? Do they have the managers who can lead it and AEs who can sell it?

Does anyone know why the launch was pushed back ??

An insider told me that "real-time" rehearsals started this week, and a few extra days were needed to polish things. Also appears the station is still finalizing staffing.

I am curious what the station will run overnights 10p-5a and on weekends; have not seen any info on that.

The Ken Hoffman writeup said that the only syndicated show they plan to run is Jim Bohannon during overnights. Haven't heard a peep about weekends.

I thought there would be all local news 24/7. Will they ever have a staff of reporters overnight like CBS radio dose in Chicago and Detroit?
This has to be a small disappointment to some.

The advantage CBS has in those markets is they have co-located TV. Radio One has nothing co-located. Unless they can work a deal with someone (TV, newspaper), it's not useful to have a babysitter overnight in the event a fire happens. Most city services don't have 24/7 staffing any more. Your home doctor doesn't work 24/7. All of these services have people on-call. That may be the way they go. UNLESS they make a co-op deal with some other media.

***A group of previously fired has beens getting together to start a radio station. Can you say failure?***

None of those people -- NOT ONE -- was let go because of poor performance or incompetence.

They were all cut loose by pea-brained corporate bean counters who have bought into the poisonous idea that money that's not spent on payroll can be made to look like profit on the bottom line.

They had the misfortune of working for a corporation willing to use that tactic in the wave of downsizing that started in the early 90s.

All the people coming on board at KROI are experienced seasoned professionals who already know how to do the job, all they need is a place to do it. They can hit the ground running when they go on the air.

This is not to say that the company they're now working for views things any differently. Over the years, it's been clearly documented that RO has chopped a whole lotta wood. My advice would be to remember what the Boy Scouts say.

You are right about that. At the same time, RO knows what kind of swamp they're wading into. They know an all-news format is a risky and expensive venture. They're certainly big enough and able to carry it financially till it starts making a profit. The question is how long will they be willing to do that.

It would be one thing if we were talking about a bunch of young unknown new-in-town radio people, but we're not.All the KROI people are known quantities in Houston radio, and my money is on them.

If nothing else, this exercise will tell us -- once and for all -- if there actually IS a profitable audience for a 24/7 all news operation in Houston. We shall see.
