New FM News Station Coming to Houston! News 92 FM!

If Radio One changes Praise's Calls, I think it should be KNUZ-FM, for K-News 92.1. I think the war of Houston's news radio would be aiming towards KTRH on the AM side, and Non-Comm KUHF on the FM side. The last we had a news station on the FM side was KFNC-which is NOT affilliated with FOX News Radio , but it's now an all-sports station affilliated with ESPN.

KNUZ? Not going to happen:

I wonder where the reporters for KTRH's enhanced "local" news presence really are? I just heard one call UH "Houston University" and talk about the 2:30 kickoff for the game. This was at 6P.

Just checked to see if KNWS was available.. those calls are on a LP in Brownsville. Check this out.. scroll down to the Translators section... Is Radio One trying to put translators in these areas?

That's for a LPTV. On radio the KNWS call is on an AM/FM combo in Waterloo, Iowa.

What site are you referring to? Didn't see anything on a quick FCC query.

KTRH - when news happens, it's news to us!

'Nuff said.

Looks like all but a couple of the translator applications have already been dismissed. The others are on their way to being given the thumbs down.

Typical shotgun approach to applications by a single entity. If you go through the FCC application records you'll find a huge amount of proposed translators/LPFMs on various frequencies, mostly from the same applicants. They know most will be dismissed, but they might get lucky somewhere.

Surprised we haven't seem more translators hit the air here in the Houston area. In DFW pretty much every empty second adjacent has seen a translator pop up in the past few years. I did notice recently that a KFTG translator on 95.1 is on the air from Angleton. I've heard the 41 watt signal in the Cy-Fair area, about 45 miles away!

In order to improve it signal north of the city, perhaps Radio One should
make Liberman Brodcasting an offer to buy KJOJ 880am and simulcast KROI on it.

OLD CHICAGO

Just heard Lana intro a news story and here was the content of the report:

"Mic check, 1, 2, 3, 4... [silence]"

Eh, they're new, I can give them a pass. Of course, Merlin's FM news station does things like this and draws the wrath of armchair PD's on message boards on a regular basis.

If, as in previous postings suggest, the stereo pilot was removed from the signal, how much further would the signal travel, thus removing the need to simulcast the programming?

What I've heard so far on KROI sounds quite good. Oh, and by the way, Merlin's stations are sounding muych better these days, now that they're more focused and really doing news. Merlin's problem is that they already made an impression on listeners when they sounded bad and were hyping unimportant celebrity schlock. So Merlin's not just battling CBS, they're battling themselves.
If WWWN and WEMP had debuted with their current product, they'd have done much better.
To KROI's credit, they sound focused and relevant. I hope they do well. The news format takes a couple of years to pay off, so I hope Radio One gives this plenty of time to work.
One of the best-sounding news stations I've ever heard was KOGO in San Diego around 1984; I think they gave it six months.
Slow and steady wins the race.

This thing sounds GREAT! Welcome back to the Houston airwaves!

ditto...sounds great! and thanks Radio One for bucking the trend and going local with the best talent possible while your competitors are nationalizing everything and leaving tenured local talent to bite the dust...the days of preparation and practice have obviously paid off...and I fully expect a year from now, the shareholders of Radio One, Inc. are going to be really happy with the ROI (pun intended) in the Houston market!

One thing I have noticed however, and I may call the C.E. to report this.
The microphone for J.P. Pritchard sounded lower than all the other ones, and was sort of "muddy". very noticeable to me.

The "Listen Live" seems to have a glitch or two. Whenever I try to listen from the website, I get a video of a group singing praise music, then it switches to the news feed.

Anyone notice over the last two hours that Dr. Joe Sobel's weather reports consist of no audio? Or at least that's how it is over the Internet stream. You can hear the anchor segue out of it so it sounds like something's unplugged over at AccuWeather.

I believe you saw a video banner ad (God, I hate those things) for an upcoming gospel awards show before going to the KROI feed.

Just heard the anchor cut the poor traffic lady off so they can get to the TOH ID and ABC News. Growing pains... ::)
