Whatever it may be, I just hope it won't be a typical "iHeart", voicetracked-to-death, station.
reading the article and the way he describes it, it seems like iHM was never fully invested in the freak. They never hired an actual sports PD, which I don’t get.
“iHeartRadio is a music company that really doesn't do that much talk radio, and the talk radio they do is not local or locally originated, and they got caught into something [97.1 The Freak] they didn't know anything about, and they were kind of overwhelmed by it, and they decided that ‘this is not our bag.’”

People complain about Bobby Bones and Woody and Elvis Duran or Jubal being on every iHeart station but when local talk fails, they also complain.None of that is true. iHeart does a lot of local talk radio. WLW is the #1 station in Cincinnati. WTKS is top rated in Orlando. I think they really hoped this station would be more like that. But the hosts, including Rhyner, were not very exciting to listen to.
How many times has The Eagle launched and relaunched as a rock station? It was a rock station for at least a couple years in the early eighties before flipping to Top 40 in 1984 (although it was Top 40 with a rock lean for several years). Then it relaunched in the rock format again in the early 90s. Then again in 2007. So if it goes to rock on Monday, it's going to be their fourth time as a rock station.if the Eagle is indeed coming back, i wonder if they do another "the history of 97.1" teaser leading up to the station's relaunch at the end of the stunting, just like they did in the late 2007 relaunch of The Eagle.
I'd be truly shocked if that happened. But as a bit of historical trivia, the Z-Rock format did run on 99.1 for a couple years in the early nineties.Random thought: Keep an ear on KFZO, which is now a lonely stepchild owned by a holding company that might lease the signal to an outside programmer.

The station's history is relevant if they actually think they're going to capitalize on any sort of legacy as The Eagle. My point is that their legacy frankly just isn't very impressive. That means that if rock does come back to 97.1, legacy ain't gonna cut it.1984 was 40 years ago. 2007 was 17 years ago. This is now.
q101 in Chicago flipped to an all news format, then reverted back to its original format a couple of years later. That was 2011. I’m sure people have forgotten about that and aren’t thinking of any “legacy”. People in Dallas need to be more worried about Dak Prescott’s legacy right now 😂The station's history is relevant if they actually think they're going to capitalize on any sort of legacy as The Eagle.
