Next Format Change In LA

I think with proper advertising (something in which KLSX lacked) it could work and bring in a lot of revenue. Also, remember that 98.7 is simulcasted in the High Desert, a lot of the demo in which KLSX tried to appeal to lives out there. Not to mention 98.7's signal is far better than 97.1's. Also, I wonder if CBS would ever be open to simulcasting AMP on another station in the High Desert so it could mess with KIIS a little more, or move it over to 93.1 (which is a little better)?
97.1's signal is excellent. What can be better than a Mount Wilson FM? Hot Talk is just too expensive to run right now with radio revenues down. Why do you think every new talk station around the country is running syndicated programming? There was a big combo of things that happened to de-throttle KLSX. Ratings, lack of programming syndication and most importantly REVENUE. You can't say that KLSX never brought in revenue. KLSX billed in more than enough revenue for the almost whole decade it ran. Do you think CBS would have kept it if it didn't make any revenue? CBS is just a smart company and know when their investment (running a Hot Talk format) is finally not producing enough. It was not CBS's fault, it was the advertisers fault. There was no advertisers (because of the economic downturn; cuts in advertising budgets), therefore no money, therefore no money to run the station, therefore no station. I'm sure CBS runs the new station at the price they paid (or still pay) Tom Leykis just to rant about how stupid women are. It was just an economic decision and it obviously paid off. Top 10 in less than 3 months. #1 in 18-34. At the FRACTION of the costs of KLSX? What can be better than that? Plus, it seems that almost all the personalities from KLSX are moving on or still producing content so what are the listeners really missing? Download the podcasts and plug them into an iPod! Sure, no Tom Leykis...but he'll come around soon, just you watch.
I don't know, I think there is a demand to see the old hosts talk again on the FM dial. After the downturn is over, do you think CBS would ever invest in this format ever again?

Probably! I wouldn't be surprised if it made a return, the format made some good cash when it was performing strongly, but as podcasting gets more popular, will there be a need for FM Talk? Probably not...

Yeah, I kinda had some renewed optimism when CBS jumped on board to actually hosts Carolla's podcasts on the Jack FM site. I just wonder if this is what Bob Moore is trying to do now?

yeah, i have to agree with you. i don't think it is likely. someone posed the question "the next format change." i framed my response with... ok we have been given the order from high above to change the format of one station ... who will it be, where does it make sense. if 98.7 was owned by someone other than CC i would not have put it on the list. but CC is notorious for doing stupid s*it so i just looked at their lowest rated FM and ran with it. there are alot of rumors now circulating about 95.5... so maybe we will see something go down over there.

in defense of 98.7... it has a demo that radio is increasingly having trouble reaching. so if this is what the truly value they should run with what they have put together. as you said, it doesn't cost much to run and it is appealing to a decent number of people.

wonder what citadels vision is for klos

I forgot to mention that Sam Philips (formerly of KLSX) said on her Facebook page that she had just completed a demo tape, and to look out for her on the "FM dial soon." Wonder which station that could be? Has anyone heard of this?

True. Pardon the stereotype, but remember in high school when all the Asian kids would have straight A's? And when you asked them, "How do you do it?", they say "My parents make me get an A no matter what or they'll beat me up at home." That's Clear Channel. If the station does not get in the Top 15, they'll beat the present day format to the ground. Indie would have KILLED to be #20 in the ratings. In fact, if it had ever reached #20, Entravision would have been flipping stations across the country to the Indie brand. I'm sure there's some goons in San Antonio looking at what they want to flip 98.7 to...I'd hate to work at any CC station...

Would they ever flip 98.7 to Country? I'm pretty sure they feel they could compete with KKGO and KFRG (of course with 103.1 already being the simulcast)

KFRG and KYSR are in two separate markets, and don't even overlap in the usable coverage area.

The LA market can just barely sustain KKGO, which generally ranks around 20th to 22nd in the sales demo of 25-54. A second station would make both become unvable.

Most of KKGO's listening comes from Orange County. It would have been wise for a station like KJLL to flip to country when there was a need for a country station because the signal would have hit all the right listeners. But why would CC shoot itself in the foot by flipping 98.7 to country? That would be a HORRIBLE move. 98-7 as an Alternative station seems alright for now and it doesn't seem like they're going to flip...but who knows what's brewing the minds of the CC executives. Personally, I used to listen between KROQ and 98-7 but now I find 98-7 unbearable to listen, while KROQ is really improving. The music mix and the promotions are getting a lot better, while 98-7 is lagging behind.

I don't think 98-7 will flip, nor should they flip, but they definitely need to tweak their sound.

They seemed to have drifted back to a more hot/modern AC approach, and they aren't jumping on new music like they were six months ago. Its become a painful, boring clone of KROQ- with a dash of the old Star. Not surprisingly, their 12+ numbers have decreased. I imagine their 18-34 and women's numbers have mirrored this decrease.

This doesn't just seem like the novelty of a new station wearing off- it feels as if someone is asleep at the wheel. The music selection, playlist, rotation, etc. all seem lazy.

Sam Philips has been playing that same one note tune ever since KLSX flipped. I wouldn't read much into her delusions of grandeur.

You bring up a good point. 98.7's signal from the northern part of the market on the Santa Monica mountains does not do as good a job as the full Mt Wilson signal of KKGO in reaching Orange County... meaning it would likely not win there where a country win is needed.

Could 98.7 be suffering because Julie Pilat is spread too thin? As far as I remember she is MD & PD at KYSR and MD at KIIS. Maybe she's being pushed to work on KIIS more since AMP is more of a threat that ever.

It's sad to see what has been made out of 98-7. Stale music...stale DJs...stale promotions and it seems that 98-7 has more commercials than KROQ. I know the promoted Darren Rose and Josh Venerable, but it doesn't seem like much is changing.

I can see Super Estrella changing.

5 years ago it had a top 10 morning show and was #3 among Spanish language stations. Now it is generally #9 among Hispanic stations in its own target demo of 18-34. They have tweaked and tweaked every 6 months. You never know what you are going to get with the station throughout the course of the year, and the company is bleeding....may as well unload the old guard and make some drastic changes.
