Next NFL Blackout Victim...

Wow! Pity the Cardinals. Here they are the reigning NFC champs - who gave an excellent effort in the Super Bowl - and they're having trouble selling out home games! Probably makes them wonder whether they should have bothered moving out of St. Louis in the first place.

Clearly, Phoenix is a pretty crappy sports town. Even LA could muster better support than this, under these circumstances.

It's sold out. Link: AZCentral.com

(Ignore the ABC reference that was missed by those stellar editors at the Arizona Republic. KPHO-TV Channel 5 is a CBS affiliate).

Glad to hear that. It was one thing when the Cardinals were horrible and management seemed to be mailing it in. But, they have a new, competitive attitude and have worked hard to build a competitive team. The local fans need to step up and give some support. If not, there are plenty of other markets that would be happy to.

The funny thing with the Cardinals is that besides games against the Cowboys, they rarely sold out prior to opening their new stadium a few years ago. And to date, they've sold out every game at said stadium.

I would have easily thought they were a prime target to fill that LA void, but not now.

...maybe they remember when KPHO-TV actually was an ABC affiliate (secondary, 1949-1953) and wonder if it can be so again :) ...

In their defense though, look at the opponent which the Cardinals are playing - HOUSTON TEXANS.

No real threat. If you look at some of the comments, you can tell they're really sweating this game (Especially in the NFC West, which like the AFC West, isn't exactly worth writing home about). So why should they waste their HARD-EARNED $$$ (Especially in THIS economy) on a game when virtually everyone knows who between the two teams is going to win.

Just my opinion.....

Cheers :D

Exactly the point I was going to make. The Colts game sold out no problem (marquee team), the Niners game sold out no problem (division foes). No one cares about the Texans here. Now the Cowboys would be another story.

"We're the Arizona Republic - if it's news to you, it's news to us."

BTW - they have since fixed the network affiliation - it now says CBS.

Same sort of thing happened here in Nashville. The tight'uns never sold out any of the venues that they were playing in while the stadium now known as LP Field was being built. Wonder what will happen once the "new" wears off of that place!

I don't know, Firepoint, but with the 0-4 Titans staring at an 0-5 record after playing Indianapolis tomorrow night, those no-shows might start soon...

I've been waiting for the bottom to drop out for years now, but these diehard fans keep supporting them no matter what! They're doing some type of "code blue" promotion right now, in which they are painting almost everything that sky blue color, and trying to get people (fans, mostly) to wear sky blue leisure suits and the like.

Some of those fans are still "torn," with Peyton Manning coming to town tomorrow night. They liked him when he was UT quarterback, and many tight'uns fans are also UT fans. They were hoping that Bud would have been able to get Peyton back in 1998, so they wouldn't have divided loyalties, but the team didn't have a high enough draft pick that year.

Sorry Pat, I'm not buying it. If the Texans were playing the Broncos at Mile High, they'll still sell out. If the Texans were visiting Lambeau or Soldier Field or Candlestick or Gillette Stadium, each venue would still sell out - with ease. Not a good enough excuse. Real fans buy tickets to see their team - not the other guys.

What you're describing is the behavior of the fair weather fan. The kind of fan that eventually results in your team moving elsewhere.....

That color is called Columbia Blue.

Which Adams no doubt retained (despite the name change) to spite Houstonians who wouldn't give him a stadium.

I agree. The Cardinals are 1-2 this year. The Texans are 2-2. Why show up when the fans know Houston's going to win!

This is not so much a blackout issue, but my CBS affiliate KGPE 47 started off with the Raiders-Giants game today ,and at half time switched to the Lions-Steelers game, I checked the CBS affiliate in Bakersfield KBAK 29 and they did the same thing, Did this happen in any other market?

It happened with my CBS affiliate (WINK TV Fort Myers) as well.

I'm positive it didn't happen with WPEC in West Palm Beach; too many Giants fans in that area.

By the way: It's Steelers-Lions.

Same here on CBS 47 KGPE Fresno.

Pretty sure that happened everywhere. I was watching the Giants/Raiders game and shortly after they came out of halftime once the rout was widening the powers that be abruptly cut out of that mess and went to Steelers/Lions without warning. Same thing happened on KCBS 2 Los Angeles and I'd assume just about everywhere else except NYC and the Bay Area.

So, did you have a backup career in mind, just in case that psychic thing didn't work out? <bg>

(Sorry, had to bust your chops on that one - GO CARDS!!!)

He was pretty close. No excuses for blowing a 21-0 lead. Talk about winning ugly! Only the Cowboys' win was uglier.

Getting back to blackouts, I think it'll happen again in Jacksonville this week. After getting destroyed 41-0 at Seattle, the have to come home against Saint Louis, who's now 0-5! Ouch!
